Welcome to Norway!

TIR5

http://www.flightsim.no/shop/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=517

1,149.00 NOK = 200.841 USD

Saitek Combat Rudders

http://www.flightsim.no/shop/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=682

1,798.00 NOK = 314.283 USD

TM Warthog

http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=649014

2,790.00 NOK = 487.681 USD

+ shipping, of course. Anything imported gets an, I think it's, 20-24% VAT, in addition to a fee for the customs office for the smashing good job they are doing.

As a side note, it seems FlightSim.no is sold out of the rudder pedals now, which means I bought the last pair they had in stock. Score!

20-24% isn't that weird though, compared to most of europe. We have 25%. The "big deal" as far as nowray goes isn't electronics (I find prices for electronics are roughly the same as here in Sweden), the big one is things like food etcetera - things that rely on domestic labor. (Well, at least for those of us who come to norway from the "outside".) Compare price for lunch in Norway, Sweden and the US...

And well, Depth, the price might sound big, but remember the differences in salaries. A lot of this is the magic of exchange rates, something that is only relevant for cross-border trade. I've worked as a relatively well paid consultant here, and one of our stronger markets was norway - because my consultancy fee was actually "cheap" - I got per hour roughly the same as a "normal" laborer at the client factories. :P (And hell, there's swedish kids crossing the border, peeling bananas manually at the same pay as I got here... :P )

An opposite case would be russia. Food and such things is cheap as hell for me there - but electronics end up roughly the same (once taxes are taken out of the equation).

TIR5 and Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals came today. Wow.

Got a TIR profile from Fish (Thanks Fish!) but it will definately take some getting used to (slightly difficult to hit switches, etc.). As for the rudder I stupidly expected it to be plug-and-play, turned out the right toe brake was assigned pitch and the left toe brake was roll. I haven't found it yet but according to the options menu a Button 1 will fire the gun.

Anyone else with the Saitek rudder notice that the toe brakes do not fully disengage? Easily fixed with some saturation editing but both pedals seem kind of loose.

And does anyone have some general guidelines for using the rudder effectively?

Using TIR pause when you want to hit a switch. Map it to someplace convenient. If you haven't watched Fish's TIR video then give it a watch.

Rudder, on the ground, demands a very light touch even if you put a slight curve on it.

Also, did you invert the toe brakes. I don't recall any saturation issue but they do need the axis reversed.

Congrats.

Pause the TIR, yeah that should work nicely

I figured I needed to invert when I was "stuck" on the runway, when I hit the brakes it felt like I was hitting the gas pedal :D

When depressed the rudders look like this:

Where exactly the dot ends up after I release the pedal is a bit random but always in the lower 1/5th area, so a saturation solved it. Just not what I expected from a quality product

That sounds like they are sticking a bit around the center detent. Some people remove that detent. I haven't done so but I do find myself centering the pedals a bit, mostly in ROF is when I notice it.

PeterP has a great post on the removal procedure around here somewhere. It works the same for the standard and combat versions of the pedals.

EDIT: Found it.

Oh, no it's not the main rudder control (though, that centre is a bit annoying when you mention it...) but the toe brakes :)

Sorry, I was doing three things at once and got off on the wrong track. I will have to take a close look at mine.

I just took a quick look at my brakes in the axis tune screen and mine are very inconsistent. Out of a dozen quick press and release I got about half returning to full range and the other half were all over the graph.

Seems like I should pull them out and see exactly what is going on.

EDIT: FWIW, the window control panel applet does not see/show the problem at all.

Any idea what's going on with that? I have to put my feet around the pedals and lift them up in order to completely disengage brakes, even though I've set them up like this

I haven't investigated further yet. I will try to get to it this afternoon.

EDIT: So far, the problem actually seems to exist only within DCS. Any external tool, such as DIView, sees full movement and full return to zero on both pedals.

Strange, as I need to pull both pedals up to taxi properly. My landing just now was absolutely horrible and I ended up sideways, but that's just me getting used to having a rudder

The TIR is amazing! It's hard to believe now after a few missions that I ever flew without it

Did u fly with freetrack or something before? Are the experiences really so different?

I have played with mine every way I can. Mine have some play at the top of the motion but it is outside of the movement of the potentiometers inside. I checked with external tools, the control window in DCS and then also played with taxiing the plane with various amounts of thrust. My brakes appear to release completely everywhere but in the 'Axis Tune' applet in DCS. So I really can't produce a problem in the sim

Have you tried loosening the screws/bolts that hold the pedals on to see if something is binding in there? If you turn on the control gauge in the sim, does it also show the brakes not returning to zero?

It really is starting to sound like your pedals may have an issue.

Regarding TIR, I agree, don't know how I flew without it and certainly would not now. If it died I would order a new one that very moment.
