Asking for help is about all I can think of at this point. I've searched and tried several remedies but the random freezes still hang around. This machine has been rock steady for over a year, and ran everything I threw at it, until I updated with SP1. Microsoft recommends hitting the caps lock key to see if the light comes on when the OS freezes to see if it's hardware or software related. Well, every time it freezes and I hit caps lock, the caps lock light never comes on, so it has to be hardware related, right? But then microsoft recommends downloading a hotfix which I did but that didn't solve the problem.

Then it occurred to me that the past three days since I have internet access, I let my daughter play those Flash games for kids online. So, I ran NOD online virus test but it never was able to complete the test because of the freezes. Thought I did sat there and watch long enough to see NOD completed drive C which was not infected. I then uninstalled the games I downloaded from steam but the random freezes continues. After a bit of googling, I found out I can uninstall SP1 and did that but no joy.

Here an interesting bit, I had bought a D-Link usb booster a few days earlier which stopped working right after the comp rebooted from installing the SP1 update. Well, after uninstalling SP1, I plugged the D-Link usb booster in and voila, it's working now.. The only culprit I can think of now is the D-link wireless NIC card I had bought to replace the USB booster. So, if after I unplugged the wireless NIC and the freezes continues, where do I go from there?

I just can't stomach the thought of reinstalling windows then reinstalling everything else nowadays.

I am of a different mindset about reinstalls but it's not my time or machine.:P

If I understand the timeline right, I might be wondering if those two network devices, or their drivers have not hosed things up between them. I would go for removing the network card and make sure the drivers are gone as well. If you have SP1 locally now I would install it before the network stuff if possible.

As for what to do if that does not stop the freezes, worry about that when you need to...you are too young for ulcers.;)

It's the NIC wireless card that causes the random freezes. I buckled and reinstalled windows and the first thing I did was testing the USB WiFi booster and it worked fine. Then I uninstalled that and plugged in the NIC WiFI and the freezes came back. Voila.

Good deal. Hopefully you can return it and use the money for a game.

Yes. I can return the NIC card. Now let the hassle of installing all those programs begins.

This is one of the reasons the little guy beating the wall is in my sig.

I am at the point of needing to redo my FSX install and that is almost as much work as an entire windows rebuild by the time I load and configure all the addons that go with it.

Symanatec back up exec is what i use. I recommend you get ver 8 or higher. ver 10 if you can. I can restore from a back up in about 25 minutes.

FSX and addons total about 45GB here at the moment. It will probably get its own SSD next time around.
