Got a question for any who care to answer. When in the mission editor and you want to set up some target points; are targets points for player helicopters supposed to actually mark targets or are they supposed to mark good observation points from which to watch over a target area?

In the real Ka-50, how do the pilots use target points on the PVI-800? Are they to mark observation points? That just seems reasonable unless your mission is to destroy a known bunker, building or bridge.

Target points only provide coordinates to the required targets, and not actual targets, meaning: If TP1 is placed over the column of tanks moving at a speed of 20km/h in road formation, then unless you start the mission on top of them, you'll find them gone from TP1. The idea is to use TP's for static objects. Think of it as a GPS coordinate for GBU-38's... If the targets are static, you will find them there. But to lock you have slew the shkval and place it over target.

With that being said, you could update the target point in reference to your ownship bearing and range. For more information, consult the flight manual pdf page: 393/534 under the heading Shkval target point designation.

But in a nutshell, move PVI-800 to edit move the INU update to UPDATE (Bottom) position, select TP1, lock the target on shkval, close the HMS,

press 0 twice on PVI-800, then press designate target key. Now the ownship coordinate reference should have the target coordinates on the PVI-800. Press Enter, then move the mode to OPER.

Reset target system. Move the autotrack switch to autotrack instead of bore, then on PVI-800, select TGT, then 1, then uncage the shkval. You now should have the target centered on the shkval.

I'll post a track shortly.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Thanks noc_orthodontist. I understood how to use and mark target points with the schval and PVI-800. I was a bit confused as to how you would use them for creating a mission in the mission editor. For static targets, buildings, bridges etc., makes sense like you said, for a battle area where enemy AFVs might be operating, makes sense to use them as a Battle Position (BP) point for the human player. I was curious as to how any real Kamov or helicopter pilots might use them if in fact they even do.

Guess no real pilots experienced with the real Black Shark cared to answer.

I treat them as "Points of Interest". Depending on the mission brief, TP1 could be "last known enemy location", or it could be "Initial Point 1", "good restaurant", or "eagle dynamics hq", etc. It just a way to put lat long into the bird before takeoff for known locations (imho).

You're welcome dude!, glad you got the hang of it. The guys you're looking for would be on the Russki side of the forums.

FYI: Perhaps it used to work this way -- but not anymore -- or maybe it was a typo -- but pressing "0" twice on the PVI-800 doesn't have the desired effect! See this thread for current instructions.

Like I said -- it might have used to work like WildBill describes -- so no offense to him! I just didn't want anyone else trying this method in frustration
