I'm just starting off with the flight sim and I'm flying with labels. However there are times when the labels are just too big.

Especially when I'm diving towards a target for a guns run and because there is so much text with the label I'm unable to figure to find out where exactly the target is.

Basically, is there any to modify the labels in such a way that all they display is a small red dot.

The sim already does this when you are at large distances away. Can I modify this behaviour so that it always displays the dots?

Also I'm trying to learn not to depend on labels. Any tips or pointers for a noob?

Thanks

Yes, look in your installation folder\Config\View\Labels.lua

There you can set the color for side + information to be displayed for various classes (weapon/ship/aircraft/ground unit) and distances.

Tips: Minimize the information provided by labels, turn them off on mission start, and only turn them on when you are really really desperate (i got a button on joystick keybinded to turn labels on/off), i.e. when the mission designer wants you to kill each and every unit on the battlefield.

I'm pretty sure there is a key command to toggle labels on/off. Just a very simple option that may be useful for you.

As for tips, I say jsut turn them off. I used to play BlackShark with labels (because I think they were on by default, or did I turn them on?) until one day I just turned them off because I wanted more realism.

Wow did I die lots after that!

...just stick with it. I think it forces you to use more sensible/realistic procedures.

I too played without labels in Blackshark. It was a bit simpler with respect to spotting vehicles only because I could hover and take my time looking for things.

My problem with A10 now is that when I fly into a combat zone there is so much going on that I start to freeze at the controls.

I want to at least reduce the label clutter and properly pin point targets. Eventually I'll can settle down and actually do the things I trained for. :)

And I'm only on the first mission, i can only imagine how I'll do in the latter ones.

Oh don't worry about the later missions, they get easier!

Spoiler alert:

Turns out the two warring factions overcome their differences through peaceful diplomacy and a cup of tea.

The rest of the campaign is filled with uneventful missions simply transporting teacakes and nibbles to diplomatic gatherings and joint-faction dinner parties.

I to found the labels to much in size it became a clutter of red and green large shapes but if you play in sim mode with labels on it gives you tiny labels enough to put you looking in right area but when you get close turn them off then have the fun searching for enemy, I tried this last night and enjoyed it immensly however the mission that normally takes 30-40 mins with large game mode labels took me about 3 hours with sim mode labels being turned on and off  as then had to rely on using the equipment in cockpit and my eyes and zoom out the cockpit, hope you enjoy as much as I did :joystick:

Meh... still better than the Mass Effect 3 ending.

Ok, I did the searches, because this is a topic I've seen discussed several times, here is some info about modifying labels into simple, small dots:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=72095&highlight=modified+labels

And specifically, maybe try this one out:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1174693&postcount=8

Probably by studying how these guys did their labels mod, you can make your own labels work however you want them to.

Personally, vastly prefer zooming over even the modified labels. IRL, A-10 pilots use binoculars, and also have much better vision than what a monitor is able to reproduce, so zooming isn't unrealistic. Besides... if you go into multiplayer, you will find your labels taken away from you very quickly. Better not to learn any bad labels habits :) But it's a personal taste. If you never plan to do multiplayer in an online squad, or don't mind having to unlearn any bad habits you might pick up, then by all means, use whatever you want.
