Hi everyone,

I was just wondering about the GAU-8/A in DCS, how come there doesn't seem to be any 'AP Only' option for gun ammo. You can select CM which everyone knows is both, HEI rounds, or TP rounds which are target practice and have tracers. But how do you get AP only which are the Depleted Uranium rounds?

I am sorry if this is a n00b question, I just would really like to have AP rounds.

Thanks!

That's the way they load the aircraft in RL AFAIK.

You can't select just API rounds. Combat mix is 4 API to 1 HEI, so it's already mostly armor piercing... Maybe there is a lua file you can edit to modify the loadout

Thanks for the quick replies guys:)

cichlidfan, yes, you are right. I think it would be very realistic because HEI rounds are pretty useless against those Rusky super-tanks like the T-90.

SmokeyTheLung, I didn't know that CM ratio was 4:1 so thanks! Also, I have no idea about editing .lua files I do not know how....

I think CM is normaly prefered when fighting against tanks. Because 4 rounds do damage to the tank and 1 not, that isn't so bad. Especially because you will also have it easier to fight infantry / light armor with the HEI rounds.

^^^^^ This.

You may fight an enemy with no tanks, in which case HEI-only is nice.

You will NEVER fight an enemy with ONLY tanks. Every enemy will have infantry, supply trucks, artillery, fuel depots, etc, etc, etc...

AP is all but useless against infantry, and a lot less effective against soft-skin trucks than you'd think. So if you give up that 1-out-of-5 HEI round, you lose almost ALL effectiveness against infantry and soft targets, in return for a 20% increase in effectiveness against tanks. Not a good trade.

I'd rather not. In fact, I once flew a campaign mission with tracer rounds back in my early days.. The results were so not anticipated...

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Worth noting that IRL I would imagine the HEI rounds would be useful for destroying sensors and other sensitive equipment on tanks.

Also, for the record, you can kill a t-80 in the sim with just HEI :D not very cost effective when you consider that a full load of PGU-13 costs around $20,000...and it takes a full load, at least

Not cost effective? I'm sure a T-80 goes for much more than $20,000 :D

Fair enough.

My point is that it might take only $1500 worth of CM to kill that same tank. In this economy that's a good deal ;)

Yeah, tell that to the dude who got blasted with an AP round, that no longer has a body.

Yeah, but you have to get a direct hit. If you're lucky, you might get one or two. With HEI, you just have to land a round within 3-5 meters of an infantryman.

Which do you think is more likely?

That's like saying 120mm APFSDS is an effective antipersonnel round, and we should go with it instead of M830A1 HEAT or M1028 canister

So AP rounds are NOT all but useless against infantry... Got it

....

you're the kind of person that thinks #8 birdshot is effective as a defense ammunition, aren't you?

You're the kind of person that assumes to much, then gets into a lot of trouble eh? Any round CAN BE an effective round... Why such a narrow point of view? Would you use a .22LR as a defensive round? Didn't think so, yet it's the round responsible for the most human deaths... Explain that one.

What, you're afraid I wont trust the info you found on yahoo answers? Let's see a source, I can't find one that's trustworthy, and I'm genuinely interested
