Sierra99 Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 This might sound like a stooped question... However, can a Patriot Battery be set to fire on Friendlies if they stray from a safe passage corridor? I'm thinking along the lines of free fire zones vs safe passage. Sierra99 Posted June 9, 2012 Author Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) Wont happen IRL. What will happen however (and I was actually there for one of these) if a friendly unit doesn't have proper modes codes and fills, they will get shot the F down. Tornado was RTB from an OSW mission just before we kicked off OIF. He was not properly configured and we were already taking SCUDs. Came south of the line, no code or incorrect authentication, and that was it. Patriot battery took him out lickety split. Well... It can happen but it isnt sposed to... I remember both OIF events very well because I was flying and we had to answer questions on landing about what we heard when...( We were eventually lead to believe part of the problem was crews were deselecting or turning off the Patriot radar tones because they were distracting.) That's the bad thing... Once a Patriot decides its gonna fire... It's not a fair fight. Anyway, My interest for this in the game was not so much as an aggressive act but as a "stick to your flight plan or else" kind of tool. Set up approach and departure corridors to add time to the missions. Druid_ Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) I did this in Battle for Belorachensk (see sig) but I used hidden enemy IR SAM vehicles (by hidden I mean in Advanced Options --> invisible) so that any AI aircraft wouldnt report their position. Check it out in the ME. Didn't seem to matter from a player perspective that they were in fact enemy SAMs and not friendly. Can't do this with Radar since the RWR warning gives it away. @USMC _Trev, I think there might be a little more to this story which was confirmed by a few friends still in the RAF. Here's something else mentioning it http://www.tonyrogers.com/news/iraq_patriot_misfire.htm p.s. I wonder if there's a way of editing the miz file to force the patriot onto the red side. Not sure, might look into it. Speed Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 (edited) You can't make patriots engage friendly aircraft, but last I checked, you could make friendly aircraft engage other friendly aircraft. If you force it through the game's Lua (triggers are Lua too) friendly AI aircraft will happily blow each other out of the sky. I did it using a different method, but it can also probably be done by creating a triggered action to attack an enemy air group in the mission editor, then unzipping the .miz file and editing the triggered action in the "mission" file so that the "attack group" triggered action targets a friendly aircraft group instead of an enemy aircraft group. Just re-zip up all the files afterwards, and change the .zip back to .miz. However, further saves of the mission in the mission editor might end up un-doing this work (or not), you'll have to test it out and tell us if you want to use this method. I wonder what happens if you tell an aircraft group to engage itself? :D Edited July 30, 2012 by Speed Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility.
