Spudman Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Has anyone here seen these two airstrips on Google Earth? If not I suggest you go there and take a look; all of the bomb damage is really interesting to see. Senaki even appears to have trenches and defensive positions.
Moa Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Yeah, not exactly precision bombing, is it? someone on these forums pointed out that bombing across (diagonal to) the runway increases the chance of getting a hit. This is true but kinda the tactics you'd expect from the 70s were you had a lot of unguided munitions. I doubt the USAF or much of NATO would have used that pattern in 2008 - they have much bigger inventories of precision guided munitions (but not by much, the Libyan operations depleting the PGMs of many airforces to low levels - forcing them to order new stock from their suppliers).
Tailgate Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 (edited) Interesting, Looks like Kutaisi got hit in the same way but the runway is repaired. Looks like there's a Mig 23 and a couple of Toads on the tarmac. Also interesting is what Google maps shows as Kobuleti is actually the "X" airfield we use for target practice, what DCS A-10 calls Kobuleti is named Meria Airport in Google maps. No, hitting the runway is performed is same manner as hitting a bridge, I can see these craters are pretty perpendicular to it at that there's 20+ craters in each line which makes me think it's a FAB-250 dropped from a Tu-22...
