FatSlapper Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Anybody care to elaborate on the distinction between bullseye and initial point? When JTAC says "report IP inbound" what exactly does He mean? And how is this different than reporting "IN"? Why two secret points?
Jona33 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 IP is a point where you start your attack from which may be many miles out, calling in is when you are rolling in and about to fire on the target awaiting cleared hot call from JTAC, bullseye is a reference point where you'll be told where something is. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
FatSlapper Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 Thanks JONA, I kinda got those basics but what if the IP is on the other side of Your target? When is the IP established in ME or during a mission?
Weltensegler Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 (edited) I could be wrong ( but at least then I might provoke some people to correct me :) ) the IP is from where ever you or JTAC decide to start your approach towards attack. And when you do so...JTAC wants to know so they can provide the marking (smoke or IR pointer pending on daytime) in time so you get your precise target location for example. If they mark the target just all the time and say "attack whenever you want ..or not" they might run out of smoke or IR-beam battery plus the enemy will have changed location :) Edited June 21, 2012 by Weltensegler 4790K@4,6Ghz | EVGA Z97 Classified | 32GB @ 2400Mhz | Titan X hydro copper| SSD 850 PRO ____________________________________ Moments in DCS: --> https://www.youtube.com/user/weltensegLA --> WELD's cockpit: --> http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=92274

nemises Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 the IP and Bullseye are pre-briefed points in the airspace.... The Inital Point of an attack is normally aligned in such a way as to minimize any danger / exposure to the attack , but also increase the odds of a successful engagement. The other advantage to knowing and using the IP (IRL AFAIK) is so the JTAC can visially pick the attack up before, during and after the attack. Anyway, long story short,it is a shorthand pre-brifed point (often but not allways set up as a waypoint in your avionics) The Bullseye is another pre briefed and arbitrary point in space, however, the location of the Bullseye is known to all friendly forces , and calls are made relative to it. The advantage is easy alignment of friendly forces despite their location, and also not using Map co-ordinates over the radio net anyways, please see this excellent tutorial on using Bullseye in Lockon (still completely relevant to DCS )
