Puddlemonkey Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Hi everyone, I keep reading that the Vikhr has an effective range of 4km. However, from experience, I have learned to think about firing at 7km and certainly by 6km. They hit almost every time. So why, when they have an effective range of 4km, do I have so much success at almost twice the distance in this sim? Any thoughts? PM
EtherealN Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Where are you reading "4km" and what is the exact context? Sounds weird to me too. STP Dragon Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) 4Km? where did you read this? As I know is this the max range of the 30mm Gun. The max range of the Vikhr is something about 10Km! Just set the targeting system (switch behind stick left) from AUTO to MAN and try it out. ;) It depends on the relative altetude between you and your target. If you are on let's say 1000m and your target is on 0m sea level, you are able to hit it from a range of 11Km and more. luza Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I'm guessing 4k is the most effective distance since more speed and therefor optimal penetration. compared to a misile that has flown longer bleeds speed and energy? tbh u can fire at 8.5k pretty consistently if ur switch to manual firing. Boberro Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I fire even at 10 km against stationary object, if it moves, ranges can be significantly decreased even by 2-2.5 km as well for 10 km and 1-1.5 km for 7.5 km. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
Puddlemonkey Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 Yes, I should have mentioned where I read it. In the manual it says: The system allows missiles to be fired singly or in pairs. The missile's supersonic speed (up to 610 m/s) decreases the shooting aircraft's vulnerability during the attack, and it can allow quick sequential attacks against multiple targets. The missile covers its 4 km effective range with a flight time of nine seconds. It does then later state the range as 0.5-8(10). Now I need to go read up about manual firing :-)
EtherealN Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Looks like a typo, if you look at page 11-2 (combat employment) the range is correctly given as 8 000 meters. GGTharos Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Effective range may have to do with typical detection/engagement ranges RL, and may have to do with tactics, or limitations of the laser guidance for example. TurboHog Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I fire even at 10 km against stationary object, if it moves, ranges can be significantly decreased even by 2-2.5 km as well for 10 km and 1-1.5 km for 7.5 km. Ahh nice my record is 9.8 km :) 'Frett'
