Lallan Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Need some help overclocking my intel i7 870. Recently got kingston T1 memory which is supposed to overclock to 1866Mhz and it is currecmtly running at 1333Mhz. Can someone please tell me how to overclock to 4Ghz or fairly close to that and also overclock my memory to 1866Mhz with the whole system remaining stable. EtherealN Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 This is done in bios. What you have to do is enter BIOS and set memory frequency to the desired value - your RAM defaults to 1333MHz since that is the highest Intel considers "stock" for that chipset. Typically you would find a way to "unlink" memory from the bClk, and then just define speed and timings as specified by the memory in question. Regarding how to overclock the CPU, this is done through raising the bClk (base clock). Take it slow and in small steps and keep testing that it's stable - also always make sure you have a temperature surveillance tool (like HWMonitor) on hand to make sure your cooling solution can take the heat, and appropriate stresstesting software like Prime95, BurnTest etcetera. Exact specification on how menus and such look are however going to vary greatly with motherboard, so I can't give exact steps. I'd recommend finding a guide online, could google keywords "first-gen i7" or "Nehalem". (Note that things change in OCing quite dramatically in second-gen i7/SandyBridge, where you no longer use bCLk.) BHawthorne Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 It might at first seem to be an odd suggestion, but I suggest getting help for overclocking on the EVGA forums. They'll help you OC regardless of hardware brand you use.
Pyroflash Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) I'd like to point out that playing with the voltages, while it has the potential for increased stability, can severely impact the life span of your components, and as such I would try to avoid it as much as possible. Speaking of voltages, is it odd that none of the ceiling lights or the AC in my house work, but everything else works fine? I don't get it.. Lallan Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 What would you guys say about setting the RAM to the XMP mode and then using ASUS's TurboV mode where it can Auto tune and increase the clock speed?
