112th_Rossi Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 In my opinion the ability to have persistant semi-dynamic missions is the only route DCS: World can take now. To take advantage of the miriad of options that will soon be introduced into the sim we can only see it come to life if there are a lot of players in a mission that will take hours to complete. Along with a mission rotation/refresh system on completion. As it stands now, the player base would be stretched to the limit and would probably dilute the experience for some as players now experiment with different areas of the sim. Will an A10C pilot still have as many pilots to fly with? Will a CA commander have that many real life players to relay information to? It's early days, but im wondering what EDs long term plan really is? Without the option of dedicated server software I can see it would be nearly impossible to live out DCS:Worlds full potential. If there are no plans to improve upon the multiplayer framework as it stands, are we all just kidding ourselves? I love what ED are doing, but I am looking to put my mind at ease but can't find any reliable source that says the longevity is assured.

Teapot Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 How would running a community server running *dedicated server software* be any different than as it stands now? Can't I setup a *community* mission server with the software in it's current form and have people play on it? Do you mean something along the lines of Aces High or Warbirds etc? "A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft." Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!
Nate--IRL-- Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 The initial annoucement of World, CA and and FC3 was something like that. That was more a medium term thing - but I suppose that is open to interpretation. I agree however that persistence is needed. The fact that servman is required for even the most basic of tools is a little bit of a joke. The future of DCS looks exciting, but it would be even more exciting of multiplayer got a bit more love than it has done over the years.
