marcos Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) From 300m to 700m with nothing in between. He tells you to hold 325m. What's going on? Is the height even in metres or feet? This training makes way too many assumptions about what the user already knows. I've currently just got a helicopter going round in a bloody circle with achieving the instructed altitude being impossible due to the readout. Completely counter-intuitive controls layout, nearly everything is not in front of you. Edited September 1, 2012 by marcos
zerver Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) The altitude on the HUD is shown from radar altimeter, but radar altimeter works only below 300m above ground level. When you flying higher than 300m AGL, radar altimeter is switched off, and altitude value displayed on the HUD comes from barometric altimeter (which shows altitude above sea level). EDIT: Barometric altitude (ASL) has small plus sign in the beginning, radar altitude is followed by letter “p” or “r”. Edited September 1, 2012 by zerver
marcos Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) So surely it's a bit stupid asking someone to achieve an altitude of 325m, when they'll never see that radar altitude on the HUD, and ground level is above that barometric altitude. At the moment I hate this game. The bird won't do a damn thing it's told unless in autopilot or being trimmed to death, which doesn't work well because it makes the control system open loop. You never trim it in quite the direction you want and then you have to try it again, which is again in the wrong direction etc. etc. There's no feedback and fix. Wish I'd stuck to planes. How exactly doe sthe hover autopilot work? Does it go into a hover? What's it supposed to do if anything? Why does the circle on the HUD not even match what the Shkval is pointing at? Is there anything you can press to reset the trim so that it isn't always trying to oppose what you do? I don't mean re-trim, I mean tell it to just stop! Edited September 1, 2012 by marcos
zerver Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) Slow down to 0-5km/h, trim the aircraft to stable "almost-hover", then engage auto hover mode. If done properly, autopilot will do its job, otherwise turn it off and try again. Auto hover shows a circle in middle of HUD with square in it. This square is hover point. Autopilot will do EVERYTHING to keep this square in center of circle. If you notice that autopilot is doing weird things to keep it in center, stabilize yourself, press and release trim button (this will reset hover point to your current position). Yeah, there is “Trim reset” button, that resets trim to takeoff trim (be ready for sudden nose up after using this). At the moment I hate this game. The bird won't do a damn thing it's told unless in autopilot or being trimmed to death, which doesn't work well because it makes the control system open loop. Look, that’s helicopter, one of hardest things to fly for human, what do you expect? Push "level flight" button and that’s it? Try turning off all autopilot channels and fly this thing like it was done long before uber-electronics era. If you want to learn how to fly this thing, keep yourself calm even if you are crashing 30 times per hour. Raging will give you nothing except heart attack. EDIT: HUD circle should point exactly where Shkval is pointing. Edited September 1, 2012 by zerver

Generally helis need to be 'trimmed to death'. Note that when trimming with FD off, you're actually commanding the AP to hold pitch, bank and heading, and possibly altitude as well. How exactly doe sthe hover autopilot work? Does it go into a hover? What's it supposed to do if anything? It is a 'hover hold' feature, ie. you enter a hover and it frees you from having to hold it yourself. Is there anything you can press to reset the trim so that it isn't always trying to oppose what you do? I don't mean re-trim, I mean tell it to just stop! Not really, you just need good trimming technique. You have to think ahead of the heli. As a start, try flying with FD ON to understand how the heli flies, then FD OFF to add the AP and see how it allegedly makes your life easier. marcos Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 I finally completed the mission. I'm managing to manually point the aircraft where I want it to go, jerkily, and have started to try the gun. Even when a ground target is locked on the Shkval, it shows nowhere near the same accuracy at range as the AI does against air targets.
PeterP Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Macros, Please have a look here again: KA-50 Black Shark 2 Training missions I have posted the links for you not without reason. Instead spending the time to write things like this #3 - read some of the articles I have posted and you will have a better day.
marcos Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 I'll give it a go tomorrow. Had enough for today though. Fixed wing only until tomorrow.
marcos Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 Okay, so I had another go today and have managed to get a dreaded training mission cease where it just refuses to continue. I've pressed ALT HOLD but it's difficult to see if it's on because the button lighting is crap.
