There's a tear in my beer thread

FVk it they can delete the last one. This is a thread for everyone who wanted to be a pilot but was thwarted. And for pilots who have regrets.. Change your name and tell your stories . Many men here need to hear it.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy and I've had both.

Went to enlist in 1991, passed all the ASVAB tests with 100% and the Air Force Recruiter came to my high school to interview me and sign the forms.

Got all through them when he asked me what I wanted to do in the Air Force. And I said I wanted to fly A-10's. Because of my eyes, and the fact that I was already 6'4" at the age of 16, the gentleman told me I would never fly any plane, but I could have any other job I wanted.

Only wanted to fly, so I turned the offer down. Dreams crushed, I actually cried that day.

Had the same problems a few years later when I tried Joining the Army, so I could have a chance at flying the Apache, but the same physical problems plagued me.

Didn't help that I'm now almost 7 feet tall.

Yeah, that sucks. I'm 6'3" right now, but I'm in my twenties, so I hope that I don't grow any more.. If my eyes go bad, I can always fix them by throwing money at the problem. If I get too tall, well, not much I can do for that..

Hehe, you probably stopped, I stopped growing when I was around 23. I don't think human beings were meant to really be taller than 6'5", because there's a lot of health problems associated with being too tall.

Just out of High School and signed up for the delayed entry program.. Spent a year in prep and was all set for flight school for the Marines.. Showed up at the MEPS center and was sworn in once there... And then they let it slip that my paperwork was all filled out with an open contract.. I said nope and they handed me a list of Mo's... Infantry, Artillery etc.. I told them get ****ed. Had a run in with a gunnery sergeant when I told him that I wasn't a Marine yet so he was nothing more than a cub scout troop master in my eyes. (THAT was a really bad idea and that was probably as close to being killed by another human being as I have ever been. Real bad idea that one. Absolutely no delusions how that run-in would have ended. He would have pummeled my 18 year old ass into the ground. Good thing they held him back as he might have hurt his fists on my face...)

Anyway, fast forward about 25 years or so and I started taking helicopter lessons on my own dime.. That was short-lived as well...

Lack of funds has killed my flying aspirations outside of DCS and Rise of Flight... I have 20 hours flight time in an R22 (robbie) .. Costs WERE $320 per HOUR and when I came back to buy the next block of 20 hours time they bumped the price 30%.. (that is an increase of more than $100 per hour for you non mathematicians!)

So I am done.. (Flying a plane is quite a bit cheaper but I really have no interest in non-rotary flight so it looks like a home built pit and flight sims will be my future...)

Friggin SUCKS... :(

Really? I didn't know that. Are taller people at a higher risk of getting sick or something? I know that there are a few issues related to blood circulation, but outside of that..

Edit: Cripes, this reminds me. I need to go visit the doc again to renew my Medical.. Good thing that the 3rd classes are good for 5 years :) (Though that doesn't help much with a commercial license).

I have to ask... why are you rocking a first class medical?

Because I am forced to (a.k.a. my school requires it to be enrolled in their classes). Thankfully they also pay the doctor for me, so it isn't that much of an issue..

Welcome to my world. Though at least if I can keep regularly passing this, it gives me a good indication on where I stand at being able to pass it at MEPS ~next year~. Since my doctor, who is also a flight surgeon for the USAF, does his 1st class exams under the same standards as the Air Force.

Regarding height, it's more to do with connective tissue problems, as well as increased strain on the heart. Their linking other issues with it as well anymore, but generally the taller you are, the more strain on your circulatory system and such.
