Profet Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 (edited) Hello guys, Im thinking about an upgrade and maybe some of you can help me decide which of these two cards to buy, mainly for DCS A-10. My main monitor is 2560x1600 and I also have a touchscreen 1280x1024 for MFCDS and the UFC using hawgtouch. The 7970 has an edge in most games at high resolutions, but not in everyone. Theres also a Sapphire Toxic 7970 6gb...would the extra memory help here? Thanks. Edited November 18, 2012 by Profet [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
JG14_Smil Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 (edited) Hello, Very interested in following your thread here as I just went to a large screen setup. I think I need more vram with my 2 Gig GTX 680's. I get great framerates with stutters only in certain situations. If I can get a power supply adapter worked out, I will be able to test the 7970 3 gig vs my current setup. So far, I have no complaints with Nvidia. There are 'most games' and there is DCS.- very different things. Edited November 17, 2012 by JG14_Smil
Pilotasso Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 I considered the 680 only due to driver quality and PhysX. Technically they are very neck to neck though. .

JG27_Arklight Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 Not sure about the ATI offering, but my GTX 680 4Gb destroys all my other games at 2560x1600. A HUGE difference between this and my "old" GTX 480. JG14_Smil Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 (edited) http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_680_4gb,1.html I found this post about the two cards. It's not DCS but it is something to read over coffee. For what it is worth, here some things I found in my tests between AMD and Nvidia (2G). AMD gives me more performance with less stutter. Nvidia gives better picture quality. Nvidia is set and forget. If you start Windows without main monitor turned on, main desktop will automatically jump back to the original main desktop (after turning it on). AMD: every time you start your multi monitor without your main screen turned on, your main desktop will reset to another screen. Even after your icons and desktop revert back (when turning main monitor on), the taskbar will stay at the other location. You must grab the taskbar and move it back to the main screen. (just a nit) Both AMD and Nvidia can eat my shorts for making those silly display ports plugs and not supplying the plugs for them. I am not the best tester. I did not try Surround or EyeInfinity as I just don't see the need. As for FPS as reported by Fraps, I get a different number each time I start up DCS. Sometimes 20 fps higher than the usual numbers. It all looks the same to me. For whatever reason, I get FPS up the wazoo wth both cards. Limiters, v-sync settings do nothing to limit it. My P8 Z77-V motherboard must kick butt or something (don't care why, I just turn it on and enjoy). Edited November 19, 2012 by JG14_Smil
