Yurgon Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 In the A-10C forum, the question came up whether it would be a good idea to open a new sub-forum for new members, questions relating to known issues that are especially relevant to newbies and so on. One such example would be Training Missions are... ummm wrong?? (which is also where the idea originated). Apparently, there's currently an issue with the A-10C training missions. A fix is on the way but not there yet. A sticky would be a good way to address that issue so that new pilots have a fair chance of finding out about it (possibly before they encounter the issue themselves), but IMO the stickies aren't usually updated on a regular basis. So I like the idea of a sub-forum that is dedicated to newbies and newbie-questions (and which could be extra-helpful with its own stickies if updated on a regular basis). I'd like to suggest "For new pilots" as a working title for the name of such a sub-forum, but suggestions and improvements are always welcome. I see one possible downside, which is cluttering posts across sub-forums. IMO that's already a problem because a lot of Bugs and Problems questions get asked in the A-10C "main" forum and have to be moved. Still, I think a sub-forum dedicated to newbie questions would make sense. What do you guys think? And who could make it work? Anyone in particular that should be PM'd about it? Besides, I don't see any harm in introducing such a sub-forum for the other titles as well. It's just that it specifically came up for the Hog, so I'm sticking with that for now.
MatzWarhog Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 I say sure! Even in my short time here, I've seen many redundant questions that could be immediately resolved in "Sticky Posts" or "Newbie FAQs". Things such as "I bought my standalone on Steam..." etc. I think it would be a great place for introductions, and learning forum etiquette, which not everyone knows. I wound think it would need to be limited to just a starting point, or many "not so newbie" questions wound start showing up there, and lots that apply to many people, would be missed by them. Pointers to the wiki and other awesome resources could also fit in there nicely. The only reservation I would have, is that not as many very experienced pilots would frequent it to answer more complex topics, or direct them to post in the main forum, or it would require someone to move the question. But, as a general starting point, it might be perfect! One of the main things it would need to survive, wound be volume. The main forum has such a high volume of users, you're sure to get a correct answer or pointer there. JMO of course, but I think it would be worth a trial run. Bexx0r Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Hey there! Having started this wonderful sim, three days ago, I yesterday read this thread http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=97641&page=6 where this idea to create a sub-forum for new pilots was born. And I must say that I definitely welcome this idea! There were so many useful hints giving me an idea how and where to start, alone in that thread, leading me to think that a separate sub-forum for newbies will be of even greater value. Yesterday, I started some training missions for the first time (start-up, basic manouvers, HOTAS functions) and had so many key-moments that I am still totally amped, today! :D I even managed to land this monster in the first try!! Okay... an observer, sitting in the tower must have thought there comes a totally wasted chicken returning from the club, trying to land, but it was a great moment! :pilotfly: I am really glad about this ressourceful forum and this great community, leading me the way to succeed. So, a big *thumbs up* from me for the sub-forum. Greetz Bexx0r ......................................................... Yurgon Posted December 8, 2012 Author Posted December 8, 2012 I'd like to bump the topic because there's an increasing amount of new pilots that stumble across the current training mission problems. I think a sub-forum for new pilots would be ideally suited to have such issues addressed by the community. Any suggestions who to contact about that?
