well im not very knowledgeable with missiles, so is the R-77 suppose to do the following.

i lock up a plane and shoot it, then i deselect the target, after that the R-77 stops tracking the target that its suppose to and does a crazy turn toward a target of a different type. In the track file provided it goes from being targeted, and flying toward a l-39 to going after an su-25

R-77 is an ARH (Active Radar Homing) missile and has its own radar, but it has short range and you can't just fire the missile from longer range and unlock the target. You need to keep the lock until the missile is close enough for its own radar to start tracking (this is ARH missile going active)... only then can you unlock the target, disengage or start engaging another target.

I am not sure what the range is for the missile to go active, it somewhere in between 10 - 15km

Actually, you can, but the missile will fly to a precalculated point based on the last radar track information update received which, given that the target doesn't change it's speed or course significantly, should bring the missile in a position from which it could acquire the target. Of course, the chances get worse with the distance.

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

But this isn't modeled. The missile just goes straight in DCS after losing lock.

Active radar range is 15 nm, and given how missiles perform at the moment, I wouldn't really shoot much further than 15 unless you're attacking a bomber or transport.

Some data

Mmmmmh ... So that's why there is a "Maximum range for a non-maneuvering air target" ... The first of the three cue on the range scale displayed on the HUD :smartass:
