desqjockey Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 So I am finally building out a cockpit and wonder what are the best short throw projectors for right now. I have a rear projection dome fantasy that one day might work, but I am going for a 3x front projector system on flat screens right now. Ideas?
BHawthorne Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 (edited) GT750 are good 0.72:1 form Optoma. Personally i use GT720. THe GT700 and GT720's are EOL though. Many people are using them in their multi-projector setups. Short throws typical come in 3 different spec pools : 0.72:1, 0.61:1 and 0.49:1-0.52:1. THe problematic issue is they're all limited to 1280x800/1280x720/720p native. There are none within this spec that are 1920x1080/1080p native. While I recommend Optoma because I've used them for years, there are other options out there like BenQ, Viewsonic and Acer that have good pedigree. Edited December 3, 2012 by BHawthorne
desqjockey Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Thanks B Yes its pretty amazing how expensive they are vs monitors for the resolution you are getting. What are the spec pools: 0.72:1, 0.61:1 and 0.49:1-0.52:1 ?
RpSPT Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I think it is trow distance/ screen widht ratio. BHawtorne can correct me if I am wrong. So depending how big your room is you have to calculate how big picture can you get with the projectors you choose.
Nascar Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 My advice is forget projectors. I have had a Panasonic and a Viewsonic running on a 110" screen. It was always my dream. In reality they don't look near as good as a big lcd/plasma and are a pain in the ass. I have had bulbs explode, burn in, a power supply failure and have taken them apart 100 times. Heat is an an issue if you don't have air conditioning in the room. Replacement bulbs are expensive and the hours go fast. Your wife will probably bitch when it breaks or when you have to buy a $300 bulb every 6 months, ha. Companies do not support projector parts for long, either. Getting them fixed by a professional is pointless as it would cost less to get a new one. Just get 3 50"+ TV's, trackir and sit closer. That's my plan when funds allow. The clarity and brightness of a projector at 1080p does not compare to a good TV. Especially in this game genre, where you are searching for a dot 10 miles away. desqjockey Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Hmm, you may have a point there. Maybe just 3x 27" LCD monitors to start off... I could get 3 of those for the price of one projector. Get playing and then add the better graphics. My room is fairly small too
desqjockey Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 But then I broke down and got a pair of Optima GT750 projectors! :pilotfly:
