First, I did several searches of this forum and found nothing on this, which is surprising.

With DCS A-10C, the power of JTAC was brought into focus, and CA expanded this even further. Unfortunately, the Reds have been left in the cold. It would be great if some FAC could be made available for Russia, and would make finding targets in the Ka-50 much easier. In particular, I'd love to see the Ka-29 added in its air command/target designation role, performing the same role it did in Chechnya. Let us make use of the R-828!

While I am aware of the JTAC for Ka-50 mod, this doesn't cover the OPFOR side.

You know, this was a question that I had -- I just assumed that the JTAC was so well done and so realistically portrayed for US ground FAC ops, that it would not work at all for the red side. I suspect that they probably have their own version of the ground fac, or at least ability to check in with some kind of frontal ground controller, but I know nothing about it. Do Russian special forces even have the capability to user IR lasers to mark targets? Certainly they could mark with smoke, if nothing else.

This is very interesting, I did not know about this. It would seem they are using a modified version of this Ka-29 in a role similar to that of our Kiowa Scout helo. Thanks for sharing this.

I wouldn't mind if the current JTAC got ported over to the Red side as a stop-gap, but I suspect this would require coding only ED can provide, and they'd never do something so unrealistic. I wonder, though, if it's not more unrealistic to have no communication with the ground.

Maybe we'll see proper FAC modeled (or something similar to it) when CA is finished. One can only hope...

There's also

showing off their use as well. Evidently #25, the Ka-50 that DCS Black Shark is modeled after, was used in the deployment. It would certainly help immensely with finding targets.

It'd be even cooler if an AI Ka-52 was added to fill the role as well. :D

They were doing so in Chechnya for Su-25's. It would be rather cool if the Ka-50 could lase targets for Su-25T's flying above.

I wish I knew enough about their frontal aviation units and tactics to say something intelligent on this subject. I got to think they would HAVE to be talking to somebody on the ground if Su-25s were hitting targets that were marked by IR laser -- I think the answer lies in researching the IR laser gear that the Russians have (or don't have).

In theory I can add the same JTAC-enabling lines to the Russian equivalent of NATO.lua and it will probably work. You will have to use the American JTAC voice or make your own as some lines are missing for the Russian language.

Don't have a lot of time so maybe someone else is willing to give it a try...:)

But don't units need to have EPLRS to be JTAC?

No. If they don't have EPLRS, they simply won't be able to send you data (the "Standby data" step). They can still give you coordinates over the radio, talk you on, etc.

Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility.
