Sorry forgot about this one "the Oil Temp guage is to be ignored". Is this currently an accurate statement?

No. Change it to "the green arc on the oil temp gauge is to be ignored", the answer is, AFAIK, yes.

Thanks Fakum & Sobek - this has been very unclear at best until now - that has helped a great deal.

I'm guessing running cold doesn't do engine harm - yet - and wont for a while?

And drag in DCS P51? I heard somewhere that the actual P51 air duct system actually produced thrust rather than drag (under specific circumstances) but if true I'm sure it was insignificant.

AFAIK radiator drag/thrust is modelled. Don't know about damage due to low temperature, my guess would be not at this point.

Just to clarify the early attempts we made using auto were with an 8 deg C ambient temp. Sobek mentions using the auto setting with too cold an ambient as a possible cooked engine source. Could you please provide an idea of what "too cold" means? The second time around it was about 15 degrees and that time we used manual full open until we got to cruising ht and speed at which time my friend switched to auto with out ill effect.

I tend to drive quite tempermental high performance cars so from that experience would not have thought 8 degrees was excessively cold in regard to viscosity of oil or coolant but obviously could easily be mistaken in regard to a P51 having no real world experience in flying one. If we had some idea of temp ranges where manual control was necessary it would be helpful in case that is the cause for engine faliures I've had.

Cheers,

Stonehouse

Yes, if the engine is cold it suffers a lot of wear and it can lead to seizure even not instant but in future.

Moreover, the oil with high vicosity does not work properly in the prop governor and you can see this effect.
