Beast Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 What does everyone think about the quality/realism of the FLIR image in DCS? I was playing A-10 the other day and really battling to find the enemy due to the fact that the FLIR in BHOT or WHOT mode doesn't actually show heat but just looks like a normal image with black or white contrast boosted. Take a look at ARMA3s thermal imaging or combat-helo dev. In my opinion if DCS wants to make more products that use FLIR they should consider a redevelopment of the imaging, yes I know that would require a compleat overhaul and heaps of work that might be a bit low on the priority list. Just saying. Combat-helo dev working thought on thermal imaging http://combathelo.blogspot.com/2010/07/light-amplificiation.html [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
IonicRipper Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I have no problem with the thermal imaging in DCS. I think its spot on. Maybe you need to fiddle with the contrast of your monitor? i5 4590 @ 3.77GHz | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1TB HDD+500GB HDD | Win10 Home X64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
cichlidfan Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I have no problem with the thermal imaging in DCS. I think its spot on. I must admit that you are the first person that I have seen say that. ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! IonicRipper Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I don't understand then... Sure the objects are small but if you have an approximate idea of where the targets are, a couple of scans in that area in BHOT and WHOT modes and they stand out like a sore thumb. i5 4590 @ 3.77GHz | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1TB HDD+500GB HDD | Win10 Home X64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Beast Posted March 31, 2013 Author Posted March 31, 2013 Yes it gets the job done, but is it realistic? It's not as much about being able to find a target, though I do battle a bit, but more about it not showing heat. I'm looking for a hot engine in a forest or heat from artillery firing. Home Fries Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 It's known that the DCS simulation of IR uses color effects and doesn't model specific heat sources (i.e. a tank will show up as WHOT or BHOT, but you won't see the engine compartment any warmer than the turret). It's not ideal, but it minimizes load on the CPU/GPU and implementing heat sources it is a lot of work for a relatively small pay-off. That said, I would love to see it as an optional GPU function (done with HDR/post processing) once EDGE is out. -Home Fries My DCS Files and Skins My DCS TARGET Profile for Cougar or Warthog and MFDs F-14B LANTIRN Guide
Luzifer Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I don't think it would really need CPU/GPU time, it would just take dedicated IR textures (more textures would consume GPU memory though).
