Hello all. Simple question does Dsc world take advantage of Hyper-Threading ? In other words is it worth upgrade from i5 to i7 intel CPU . If yes what are the benefits , if not is ED CONSIDERING it in the future ?

not worth upgrading just to add hyper-threading. DCS uses 2 cores/threads only, 1 for main game engine and 1 for sound. Adding more threads or cores to the CPU won't benefit at all, unless you have older 2 core CPU and want to get newer (faster and more efficient) 4 core CPU... but benefit won't be much due to extra cores/threads, but because of better processing power per CPU core.

the advantage on having more cores, is that all the other stuff that runs, can be pushed on them, instead of having to share on the ones dsc:w uses ;)

Your probably not going to see a major increase in framerates due to hyper threading due to 2 DCS being unable to utilize more than 2 threads. If your silly and have a bunch of other stuff running in the background however, it may be beneficial.

 

I notice you are running an i5 2400k@4.6 Ghz which means you have clocked it. Most clockers will recommend you disable hyper threading and opt for a higher CPU clock to see the best improvement in game performance, If you upgrade to an i7, you'd have to buy a high end unlocked model to beat the speed you have with your i5 and probably have to disable hyper threading anyway. You can loose as much as 20% of your core clock speeds with hyper threading enabled.

ED is moving toward more than 2 core/threads, but details and the timeline for this are sparse. All we know is that DCS will be 64 bit only by the end of the year (probably) and that EDGE may separate graphics from the rest of the simulator.

X-plane 10's engine has a way to distribute the flight models of different aircraft etc. over all available cores. This shows it is possible, at least in principle, to distribute the physics (the heaviest part of DCS) as well.

 

Would be cool if ED manages that at some point. Perhaps with EDGE...:music_whistling: It'd buy a XEON processor rig then. :thumbup: Right now, I have hyperthreading disabled. It prevents the sim from running its two threads on one physical core, which is slower (obviously) then assigning each thread to its own physical core and running any background on the two remaining ones. No need for hyperthreading with DCS at the moment if you have a 4 core processor (like I7).
