impostor71 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Hi, I'm a completely new DCS player and new Huey pilot. I see people talk about using trim. What does it do for you? When would I want to use it? How do I activate it? Thank you!
doright Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) Trim relieves control pressure required to hold an particular flight attitude. For example in high speed forward flight a lot of forward cyclic is required. To relieve that pressure a r/l pilot would push the trimmer button (but not move the control). Since this is a simulator with spring loaded joysticks the trimmer in game allows you to recenter your stick, without changing the helicopter's attitude, to relieve the pressure you would have to hold otherwise. "T" key will activate the trimmer. "LCtl-T" will release any applied trim. Use the control position indicator window (RCtl-Enter) to play with it and observe what it is doing. There are also checkboxes in the Options->Special tab->UH-1 tab for "Enable Rudder Trimmer" and "Central Position Trimmer Mode". The first one if enabled means that when you hit T the rudder position (not just the cyclic) is also trimmed. The Central Position means that the simulator will wait for you to return the joystick (and pedals) to center before accepting any new joystick position information. Again playing with the controls window will show the difference. Basically without Central Position as soon as you hit T you have to quickly recenter to minimize the helicopter from suddenly jumping around. With it you have make sure you can recenter your joystick otherwise you can't regain control. When it is used and how is pilot preference. Edited May 15, 2013 by doright
Suchacz Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Read this article: http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_428a.html It describes trim functionality and its implementation for non-FFB joysticks. It's written for Black Shark, but the principles are quite similar. Per aspera ad astra! impostor71 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 ahhh, I see. Thanks for the explanation doright, and thanks for the link Suchacz! I have an old Saitek X45 and it is very stiff. I think trim will help me in FF.
PeterP Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) And to give you a better idea what is happening with the real cyclic in the Huey when you use Force-Trim. Please have a look: http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=73514&page=4&p=1913338&viewfull=1#post1913338 another force trim mechanism http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=83814 Edited May 15, 2013 by PeterP
impostor71 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 That's cool that it holds the stick in the position of trim.
