several times (in multiplayer) I get a SPI set and the TGP tacking, going in for the kill

when suddenly it malfunctions and goes haywire losing the target

like it will go snap to another area all on it's own without me doing anything

if you turn too steep will you break the camera? it says gimbal lock or something. turning the tgp off and on again fixes it

It's not a malfunction. TGP is simply limited in the number of turns it can make in one direction. Either roll back the other way, or reset by pressing standby then A-A/A-G as required.

so if you run into the gimbal limit do you lose your SPI as well?

it would be better to first designate your target with a markpoint before turning on it then right?

it's like the TGP shuts off and goes dark, not just running into it's limit

You won't lose your SPI if the TGP gimbal locks.

Either roll in the opposite direction to unlock it, at which point the TGP will reaquire where you left it, or reset to boresight, then slave back to the SPI.

I guess the thing is I am losing the SPI. I'll have to pay attention next time to exactly what happens, but it just goes haywire and loses the target all on it's own, or so it seems.

Make a Mark Point with TMS Right Short so if you do lose the SPI, you can find it again in Mark Point mode.
