I tried searching for "realistic helicopter rudder pedal tension", "rudder pedal tension", and "realistic tension" in both google and the forums and could not find my answer.

I recently purchased the Saitek Pro Flight rudder pedals with a tension adjust knob that changes the pedal tension. I fly rotary wing only and as a complete noob to the real life thing...what is the most realistic tension setting? I currently have them set to the stiffest setting possible but this just doesn't feel smooth when controlling.

I have a feeling I am wrong on my tension setting can anyone with knowledge of the real life thing give me some input or am I just not used to it?

I think the tension adjustment is more a question of comfort then realism. Its just like the friction adjustment on the X52 throttle.

I would set it to the most comfortable setting for you.

I can tell you that the pedals in an R22 are very light... I have the same pedals that you have and set the tension almost completely OFF... You want to "Feel" the helicopter (which is tough to do with a SIM) Having the pedals to stiff makes it even more difficutl to get that feel...

Wind and such turns you very quickly and you need to be able to react quickly and smoothly... (I still don't care for the detent in the center, but I don't hate it enough to remove it...) I DID remove the detent in the throttle though... IMHO THAT is a required mod if you are going to use it as collective for a chopper...

Turn the friction DOWN on your pedals and you will be happier...

Wow just fired up the Huey after reading this and adjusted the tension setting to the lowest possible on the pedals...what a difference! I guess maybe common sense should have told me the pedals were too stiff but again I have no real life experience so I was not sure. I felt maybe the mechanical workings of the real thing would make it stiff so as to not overcontrol or something? I am not sure what I was thinking.

I feel much more in control of the helicopter now and everything just felt much smoother on the lap I took around Batumi.

Maybe some other noobs will see this and it will help them.

Thanks guys

I have the Warthog and have same pedals you have, just the combat version ( useless for heli )

I just removed the spring... and decreased the wheel on the middle to max, so I have really free movements, it's the best for helis

Every Pilot likes it different.

Okay, normaly the Pedals are not changeable in the Helos i know (350, Lama, 206, H300, R22, R44 etc.)

But the Cyclic and Collective are, and some Pilots want a little bit friction and some not...

Its like IconRipper said... Do what you want, It needs a "little" bit, you should feel that you push something, but not that hard.
