FanBoy2006.01 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Yes 688(i) was great. Still got the box wit manual and disc. Loved that one. Also got Dangerous Waters. My favorite subs are the two Kilos but I really hated the graphics. The whole nose profile of the 688 wanted to make me puke. It was also the same for 688(i). But that was the first sub sim I could play with an actual outside view. Tried to install graphics mods for it; but I couldn't get it to work so I gave up eventually... I would love to see a modern sub sim with the graphics on par with even SH3! Back to 688(i). That was the first sub sim I bought (Only saw WWII others at friends and never played them.). Then SH2, SH3 and SH4. Loved them all but SH3 is my favourite. SH4 plain is a buz kill with useless Destroyers that you can duke out with on the surface. The mods/updates are needed to make SH4 a challenge. That being said. I would rather prefer a modern sub sim like 688(i) and Dangerous Waters. I prefer the resent past and current era in sims.
Vintovka Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) I am currently balls deep into Silent Hunter 5. I have all 70 (yes seventy) recommended mods from this list here. The mod list is on page 2. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192374 It took me several days to download them all due to D/L cap but it was absolutely worth it. The sim is unbelievable but as others have stated here it is basically unplayable without these mods. If you play it with this modlist you won't regret it. 100% realism with real navigation (your navigator uses dead reckoning and celestial fixes) and using the RAOFB wheel for manual targeting is such a feeling of satisfaction. Or using the Four Bearings Method to track a target completely by hydrophone and attacking from 20 meters depth never exposing your position... Gonna start it up now and start my next patrol. Tutorial vids on Four Bearings and RAOFB wheel. Edited August 30, 2013 by Vintovka
riboyster Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I fully back Vintovka's recommendation. He and I play SP campaign together and I can assure you that the immersion is amazing. Use the list that he linked, 70 mods sounds like a lot but the game is simply unplayable without most of them. Silent Hunter 5 surpasses Silent Hunter 4 by about 80% IMO and is definitely worth playing for any naval combat enthusiast. 1 -SnakeShit [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Peace through Superior Firepower EVERYTHING YOU'LL EVER NEED FOR LOMAC: http://flankertraining.com/ironhand/news.html
cichlidfan Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Hmmm, maybe I should give this a look. SH4 with RFB and TMO 2.0, IIRC, was the last SH that I played. Thanks for the list. bumfire Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Dangerous waters, silent hunter 3 withgrey wolves mod and silent hunter 4 with uboat pack. Silent hunter 5, dont buy it as its shit. DW, SH3+GW and SH4+Uboat paid for DLC Those are about it unless you want to get funky and go back to 386 days and play 688attack sub which looks awful on todays machines. 1
streakeagle Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 I was a submarine sonar tech on SSN 687 with AN/BQQ-5B FY83 SHAB and also spent a week on a 688 with AN/BQQ-5D. Dangerous waters is about as good as your going to get unclassified. If you like sonar, target motion analysis, classification, etc., then Dangerous Waters is your game. I could teach you to be a half decent sonar tech using this sim. The Navy actually used the earlier version, 688i, as a cheap substitute for the full size simulators to help teach sonar/TMA. But be careful what you wish for: realism means hours of staring at blank screens listening to white noise hoping that you will find something. Even using the accelerated time can't always avoid a long boring wait for a threat contact and some maneuvering/shooting action. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
