kk0425 Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I was watching dogfights and in one episode with an Israeli guy, they said the average pilot could see enemy fighters 8-9 miles out. The guy that was interviewed claimed to see up to 24 miles. So I would think that if we could somehow get about 8 miles, then it should be okay.
Echo38 Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 (edited) I can see a P-51D in DCS at 10 miles (in my air-start duel mission, the pair starts that far apart), but only if I know almost exactly where to look and am at my maximum zoom (which is somewhere around 80% of default max zoom, since I edited my files to lower my max zoom). Even then, conditions have to be right--if he's below the horizon, I can't see him. As I indicated earlier, the problem lies with our hardware rather than with the sim ... specifically, our narrow-FoV PC monitors having to try to simulate ~170 degrees of vision, and the other problems inherent to a PC monitor. ubiquitousuk Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I'm with xcom in thinking that the (post-TF) CloD approach works pretty well. It's still tricky to spot a moving bandit against dark terrain, but one never has the feeling that one is being handicapped by monitor limitations. The glint of the sun reflected from a canopy, in particular, is often just enough to catch the eye so you know where to look. That said, I don't have much flying experience, so I can't comment on how realistic this is/is not. In general, I have some sympathy both for those who advocate realism at any cost, and those who accept a fall in realism to account for shortcomings of our hardware. Ideally we'd have an option to toggle between the two alternatives according to taste. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
secret1962 Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 So true ! View is so weird and you can't even see the planes near you even though you know they are there ! Same applies to tanks (and TGP thermal being bugged).

Ideally we'd have an option to toggle between the two alternatives according to taste. If you want a realistic visual *effect*, a sim needs to break some visual scaling rules. Players *need* to be able to spot as distant contacts (as dots) whilst in wide view mode as they would in narrow view.
