alert_ Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-7.html "has an uplink to the autopilot for mid-course guidance updates" Is it true? IIt would be big advatage over older AIM7M because launching platform could lock on target only at therminal phase thus enemy aircrew would get as little warning as form AIM120....
GGTharos Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Yep, it's true ... but it wasn't deployed IIRC. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
alert_ Posted January 8, 2006 Author Posted January 8, 2006 "Raytheon is still producing AIM/RIM-7Ps by upgrading existing Sparrow missiles to -7P standard" According to the mentioned site, AIM7R with active seeker was cancelled, instead AIM7P should be still in active inventory...
Trident Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Yes, the -P is a bit of an enigma. I've heard knowledgeable people imply that it never entered service, OTOH designation-systems.net is usually very dependable. The jury is still out on this one, anybody care to research?
GGTharos Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 AIM-120 replaced the 7 just as the P was supposed to enter service and supplanted it, AFAIK. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
D-Scythe Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 AIM-120 replaced the 7 just as the P was supposed to enter service and supplanted it, AFAIK. Hmm, according to Steve Davies the AIM-7P seems to exist operationally in some form or another. Key word is seems.
Caretaker Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 fas.org is a bit contradictory, as often: "The AIM-7M, the only current operational version, entered service in 1982" "The AIM/RIM-7P was introduced to the fleet through GCS retrofit and GCS new production contracts. The AIM/RIM-7P retrofit program began deliveries in November 1993. Because the upgrade from AIM/RIM-7M to AIM/RIM-7P did not impact Carrier Air Group (CAG) operation and maintenance procedures, a unique Fleet introduction was not required." http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/missile/aim-7.htm If the P model was mainly introduced by replacing the guidance units of M-model units, that could explain the apparent confusion here. Cobra360 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Anybody know anything about the AIM-7MH that was featured in JF/A-18? According to Janes it is aslo called the AIM-7H. I can't find much if anything solid on this missile.

Did somebody say "enigma?" ;)
