RainMakerXX Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Hi! I just got the free base-version of DCS, with the SU-25, and I love it! Just what I have been looking for. Very impressive! What I don´t know, however, is where to go from here. I understand that DCS is the basis of everything, but then comes Lock On, Flaming Cliffs, add ons ... In short, I am not sure how it all works. Should I dl Flaming Cliffs now, with the planes that come with it, and is it standalone or an extention to DCS? And where do Lock On fit in the picture? I get the part where I can buy single planes in DCS base version though. Thank you in advance for any clarification :) :noexpression:
Cnuke Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Get everything ! :) No, seriously take your time. You are gonna need it. Especially when studying any DCS quality aircraft. The flaming cliffs planes are not as complicated as the other DCS titles. I advice you to do a search on the internet for reviews and videos of the aircraft you might be interested in. You can also connect to not pw protected online servers, to have a general idea what other peoples interests are. And what online missions are ongoing. Also check out this wonderful future plan: As for Flaming cliffs 3 it is similar to your free SU-25T. With the exception that some planes have a fantasic 3D cockpit and the freedom to look around in it. Flaming cliffs 3 needs a copy of the old Lock-on to be installed (wich you have to search for yourself). After Flaming cliffs 3 is installed you can delete lock on from your disk. FC3 installs like other modules into DCS World I suggest looking at the A-10C, as it is truly amazing to be able to learn all the systems yourself with being able to click on all the switches Edited September 12, 2013 by Cnuke

Most of the planes from Flaming Cliffs will be available through seperat downloads soon(Like the A-10A and SU25 today). There is some difference between the modules. SU-25 and Flaming Cliff 3 planes are low end simulators(Easy). The KA-50, A-10C, UH-1H, Mustang and Mi-8MTV2 is High end simulators(Study simulators where almost every button and its systems are simulated like in real life). I recomend you to by the A-10C if you like fixed wings. Soon we allso have Mig 21 Bis. Study sim examples: A-10 C startup: Mi-8MTV2 startup: This is onely the startup, you allso need to learn navigation, weapon systems, and defencive system etc. A lot to learn, yes. But it is funn all the way. I recomend you to buy Track IR 5 and a stick. Welcome to DCS world. RainMakerXX Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Thanks! I will for sure, I see the start of a long and promising relationship :p But still, how do I go about Flaming Cliffs, Lock On etc, do I need those, are they mainly for new maps etc, in short; am I missing out on anything? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I am not well traveled in this universe yet. Thanks a bunch, much clearer now, really. Edited September 12, 2013 by RainMakerXX Answered
RainMakerXX Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 Thanks! Duly noted. I have my hands full for now anyways, with familiarization to what I´ve got, so I´ll bide my time and se what´s in store for us :)
RainMakerXX Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 Great startup vid of the A10 btw. Beats startup checklist in the Cessna 172 :)
Irregular programming Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Remember that you need the original Lock On installed on your computer to install Flaming Cliff 3 this is because Ubisoft owns that trademark. That's why I would instead go for the separate modules of the FC aircraft if you like the more simplified versions of their airplanes. If you like the more advanced aircraft I would go for the A10C first, it's probably the thing you'll get most gameplay out of while it is easy to fly it's also fully modeled and has a good single player campaign and since it's probably the most popular module there are also a lot of people flying it multiplayer which means that there are lots of missions for it as well. The Ka-50 after that, because it's a combat helicopter that you can use in lots of missions. The other modules are more specialized and something you'd use from time to time but maybe not as your main go to aircraft. Both of bellsimteks modules are amazing (UH and MI8 ) and I highly recommend buying them and the p51s only flaw is that it's missing a good environment to fly it in other than that that too is a great buy. Other than that, welcome! :P Edited September 12, 2013 by Irregular programming
KennethBF Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) ...are they mainly for new maps etc There is onely one map(DCS World), and that is Georgia and some parts of Russia. There will be new maps in the future(Newada(US) is in the works). I recomend you to wait with the Flaming Cliffs 3. Like I said, most of the FC3 planes will be awailable through separate downloads soon. If you miss a fast mower, Mig 21 is soon out(probably before Christmas). Raven68 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Although it's not flight, but part of the DCS library, dont forget the Combined Arms module also. It can go well with a purchase of A-10C or Ka-50 Black Shark. Especially if you are doing multiplayer with some friends. You in the role of JTAC calling in for close air support (CAS). :) Welcome to DCS my friend. Intel i5-9600K @ 3.7GHz; Gigabyte Z370XP SLI Mobo; G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4080 16GB 256-Bit GDDR6; Thermaltake Water 3.0 Certified Liquid Cooling System Windows 11 Professional HP Reverb G2 /TrackIR 5 in case VR dies; Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog w/ Thrustmaster T-Flight Rudder Pedals

Ells228: For the public release end of this month we'd like to get feedback on aircraft systems and the cockpit, not so much the flight model as it will be completely re-written. Harrysound Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 To be honest if you can't be bothered with the fuss of having to buy lock on modern air combat to then get flaming cliffs I suggest just buying the Su 25 3D cockpit version and the A10a ,both from flaming cliffs. Then I would decide to go for a chopper and get the black shark , which is still my favourite.
