Ok, my group has recently rented a vps server.

we've installed dcs and is up to date.

made the autoexec.cfg

-set max fps to 20

-render3d to false

when we attempt to open the launcher or dcs executables, its crashes.

.net framework 3.5.1

now the video card is "rdpddchained dd" in dxdiag

now its only has 2gb ram, and 2gb virtual memory

is the video causing the issues here i wouldnt think its the ram, i'm assuming from past experience that the main menu would load ok, not until i actually try to render some graphics would the ram become an issue. crash logs are only made when the dcs.exe crashes no the launcher. but below is the crash log.

anyone have experience with this, know how to fix, or troubleshooting steps?

p.s.

is ed/3rd party working on or planning an official dedicated server tool? i.e. no rendering, just all text like some other dedicated server tools?

Try keep the rdp client connected through console. Use the following command to open the RDP Client in console mode :

mstsc /console

After the login, close the RDP client keeping the console logged.

Try to connect the VNC Client. It should show you a Win 2008 login screen, showing a user logged.

Grab the logged session and go on from there.

Another solution is to use an app like Teamviewer or Logmein .

Do DCS servers run OK on VPS servers?

Sorry if this derails this thread, but I would be very interested in understanding other peoples experiences of using VPS servers, as this would be cheaper than dedicated hosting. I am also interested in looking at this solution for a dedicated Falcon BMS campaign server for my squadron.

Thanks in advance!

VPS servers have issues with the directx rendering as you have to effectively launch DCS to get the multiplayer working (even with the render turned off)

As such you need a dedicated machine really (thats what VA are using) with a decent gpu chip to prevent server stuttering

Cheers pman - I had a feeling that would be the case.

That is not true. DirectX/OpenGL is supported up to certain level on some virtual machines. You can even run 3dMark in some VM, or even 3d-games. Of course there is some pefrormance penalty, but it is still usable.

3d-graphics in virtual machines is better suported in type-2 hypervisors (OS-assisted, i.e. VirtualBox or VMware Workstation), but works on some type-1 too (i.e. ESXi has the option of either software rendering - SVGA, virtual shared gpu - vSGA, virtual dedicated gpu - vDGA, or pass-through gpu).

FYI, I tested the old original LOMAC in virtual machine some 6-7 years ago, and it worked even at that time! :-)

I didnt say it wasnt possible.

I said they have issues...

Having spent 7 months now running VA I have tried many different combinations to optimise the performance on the server.

Only my opinion from my experience.

Ok just to update everyone we raised a support ticket with VPS / Game Host provider and after checking they have clarified DCS World needs graphic card support and the VPS they have is not sufficient. They are now in the process of moving us to Dedicated Server.

Guys,

I know you shifted over to a dedicated server but i wondered if anyone had experience of the VPS Side of things.

I have downloaded DCS World onto my VPS and installed it fine along with the DirectX and C++ Redistributable.

However I am now getting the "Virtual Computer" copy protection issue, I am assuming that since this thread ED have implemented this copy protection to stop its use on a VPS?

This thread suggest that some of you managed to get DCS Working on a VPS despite some performance issues?

Any suggestions would be welcomed.. if its a case of simply... not gonna happen on a VPS.. then ill uninstall it and walk away.

I am going to be investing in some hardware soon to get colocated that will run a series of VPS' for running other Sessions... FSX being the main one and it would be great to be able to get DCS World hosted too.

All the best,

DCS World will run on a VMware vSphere or VMware Player VM - it doesn't appear to run on a Hyper-V or Virtualbox VM.

I haven't seen anyone report on Xen or KVM.

I think the proper way now is to create file:

C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\DCS\Config\autoexec.cfg

And include in it:

options.graphics.render3D = false

At least that's how I did it. Advantage over previous solution is this stays there even after DCS-update.
