I have been toying around with the idea of having some Human-driven Hueys picking up a downed pilot with a pair of AI Apaches for Escort.

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be an ESCORT task for the Apache.

I tried the FOLLOW command with them and assigned them to spawn airborne and follow the huey that I was driving when I entered a zone. Unfortunately, they simply motored off toward the nearest airport and away from me completely ignoring the FOLLOW task set.

Any ideas? Bottom line, I just want them to stay close and engage any OPFOR that they would come across while on station....

Test this with an OH-58D. I just built a mission with these OH's Following an AI Huey group and that worked.

If it is possible that your AI aircraft are disengaging because of enemy air defense, try adding an Advanced Action to the escort for Reaction To Threat = Passive Defense.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there are no enemy within 20-30 miles.

Have 2 AH64 that spawn a few miles from the airport. They have a FOLLOW task assigned to my Huey. I lift off almost immediately and fly directly toward them. We pass and they simply continue on to near my designated "breakoff" WP for them and they circle.

I have read a few posts that give the FOLLOW task mixed reviews for following humans.

Are they spawned in ahead of you and possibly going through the "follow" command before your aircraft spawns? Then just going on their merry way in your brief absence? Or do they spawn in after you?

Maybe try spawning them in once you enter a zone away from the base?

Tried it both ways. Same result. They simply ignore me and go about their business

I think it is the lack of the Escort task for these Apaches, where the OH-58Ds do have that option.

I was editing my mission again last night and switched the OH's task type back to Escort and then had issues with incompatible advanced actions of attacking groups. The Escort type and Follow action do work together when both are available. I ended up deleting all of the attack actions for the escorts, and setting ROE = Fire and Alarm to Red and it looks to be working OK.

Hmmm- very strange.

Have you tried running your huey as an AI instead to see if they follow it? That would pretty much guaranty it's a bug.

Sure did. Set them to follow an AI Huey and they snapped to it with military precision.

Frustrating.
