Hi,

I have a Q that i can't find the answer to and need clarified :)

I have all modules except Mi8 and I recently lost an activation due to error on my part :D.

Now I wonder if I install through Steam instead will the hassle with standalone DRM and activations/deactivations go away?

The reason for me asking is that I experiment a lot with my computer and occasionally things go bad even though I have

backups and clones of the OS disk.

I would truely love to see this terrible hardware-activations go away, they're just a archaic relict to gag the honest users which does not correlate present-days demands. Today, you have a online license managment, aligned to your email-address and the current hardware you actually use is not for interest.

I have only 2 activations left, as I have multiple residences and multiple PC's (which change its hardware often due to failures or upgrades), so if I have lost all my activations I will abandon DCS and really not re-buy a product again which I've already paid for. And I have no desire to contact support for home-made problems .

You do get an activation replenished after a month if you run out.

Starforce is still in use on the Steam version. I tried it for laughs under WINE to see if it would run (pre World you could get it to run fine until you started a mission where you'd get prompted for a key) on Linux. It blew up on protect.dll just as the direct download version does. I'm with you though. Would love to see SF go away.

While I agree that that would certainly be better in some ways, I think you'll find that such always-online solutions aren't exactly popular and tend to come with a whole slew of problems. (Latest example I 'enjoyed' was when Rockstar's "Social Club" had an outage that prevented users from playing Max Payne 3 - for 10 days...)

As mentioned, the last activation, when used, is automatically returned to your key after 30 days.

Yah the always-online-shit is the other extreme ... I think it's okay if the game tries to check a valid serial key with generous waiting periods and doesn't always need an internet connection when started. Steam does it good for me, it let's me verify a new PC by email but then it's okay.

Good to know that the last activation will be refurbished after 30 days. So often I don't change my hardware, but I have many games which I just can't play anymore because exaggerated copy protection. Such publishers won't sell any more game to me...
