You can explode units and set the size of the explosion. The smoke will last for minutes. But too many of these will cause a frame rate hit - like say, if you had 30 explosions and smoke, you will prolly get some lagging during that time.

Make the unit Immortal and add in a timer flag that triggers explosions one after another. Do this for 5-10 units in the trees and you've got yourself an inferno!

 

Then, when you want the fire to stop you can deactivate the units so they disappear from the map.

 

For fun, try an explosion with a value of, say, 500,000, or even more :-)
