VH-Rock Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Looking good, Fred! From the squadron codes, I would assume 328th FS, 352nd FG. It seems to be a nice combination of features from the different squadrons of the 352nd. Look forward to the finished item :) Virtual Horsemen - Right Wing (P-51) - 2008... Virtual Ultimate Fighters - Lead (P-47) - 2020...
Der_Fred Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 ...I would assume 328th FS, 352nd FG.. From what I understand.. that's the one. :)
VH-Rock Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 From what I understand.. that's the one. :) The squadron codes certainly suggest it but, I believe, that the 328th FS had red rudders (like George Preddy's 'Cripes A' Mighty'. Do you know if this one is a historically correct scheme? Virtual Horsemen - Right Wing (P-51) - 2008... Virtual Ultimate Fighters - Lead (P-47) - 2020...
352ndDeacon Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) Also the noseart was only on the plane's left side and the tail color being blue means it was from the 487th FS of the 352ndFG. Edited November 26, 2013 by 352ndDeacon
Der_Fred Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 Yeah.. I'm going on the current paint scheme of the plane in that weblink. I also knew that the nose art was on the LHS, and originally did it so... then some local guy show me that it was also on the RHS on the current a/c.. 'when in Rome' I took it for a quick spin around Vaziani.. to make sure the colours were aerodynamic  I see I must paint the inside of the radiator input, and extend the 'P' a bit, not to mention the Pitot and radar colours https://www.dropbox.com/s/bk5c208a31eed98/QoH_1080.f4v (142MB (HD))
Whiplash Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 The skin looks really good! I noticed there is a slight offset from the fuselage stripes and the "E" as well but other than that, it looks spot on to me. Nice work! Whiplash Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Never mind... I just looked closer, you have the offset in your skin. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Adulthood is like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane." Dogs of War Dedicated WWII Server Thread
Der_Fred Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 The fuselage star insignia is lower than on the aircraft, but I did this on purpose as the star would cross 'texture spaces' making it difficult for sizes and alignment. I already had to split the star across front and back fuselage textures...what a mission to get that lot right.. maybe I'll lift the fuselage star when I'm more energetic !! :-)
Whiplash Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I know what you mean. I'm sure they had their reason behind it, but man I wish it was just one large skin texture instead of four! Der_Fred Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 Also the noseart was only on the plane's left side ..This is from a recent local airshow
352ndDeacon Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 (edited) Not to argue the point that the plane you saw at the air show has noseart on both sides, having spent many hours with the pilots of the 352ndFG and having copies of their books, "The Bluenosed Bastards of Bodney" and "Bluenoser Tales", both of which contain hundreds of pictures taken by the pilots and ground crews of the actual P-51's flown in WWII, I have seen none with noseart on both sides. If they were flown by more than one pilot and the secondary pilot wished noseart, then it was painted on the right side according to the list of planes in the "Bluenosed Bastards of Bodney". These were only a few in number and I am currently looking for your plane, which would have been flown within the 487th FS according to the color of the rudder. The skin you made is beautiful and if that's the way you want it, great! It's your creation and congratulations on your talent and effort. Edited November 27, 2013 by 352ndDeacon
