Raven_Morpheus Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Hello I've been enjoying this game (BS1) a while now, after initially shelving it due to not understanding how to even start the helo, but I'm wondering about improving some graphical aspects. In particular I'd like to improve the readability of the cockpit dials and remove jaggies. I currently run the game in the native resolution (1080p) of my 19" TV. After going through a tweak guide I found (on this site I believe) on average I get 40-50fps after changing parameters in various config files of the game. Most of the time over open country I get 50-60 but in some missions with built up areas (such as the single mission Altitude) I get as little as 18!! Can I set the dials to 1024 without losing FPS (assuming that makes them more readable)? Is there a good/recommended way to get rid of jaggies (on an ATI 5870 1GB GPU) without losing FPS - I've tried some AA via ATI tray tools and I've currently got it set to 2x Edge Detect but that doesn't seem to make all that much of a difference - so what's the best AA setting? Also, when I started a campaign last night (the first in the list, called Deployment I think), the speech of the guy in the other helo was in Russian so as I'm a monoglot Englishman I had no idea what he was saying and reading the text is rather cumbersome when trying to fly, so is there any way to get that speech in English? Thanks in advace for any tips on this. Edited December 7, 2013 by Raven_Morpheus
Bee_Sting Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Have you updated the game? You have many patches for BS1 patch 1.01c and 1.02 Then you have Dcs World( Just recently they stopped supporting 32bit operation systems). They have cockpit mods for BS1 on but they are hard to find my friend.
zaelu Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Jaggies on textures appear from DDS textures with no or to few Mip Maps. To correct this you can resave textures using a software like Photoshop and a plugin for DDS from nVidia (works on ATI/AMD also :) ) or save them as TGA which makes the videocard generate the appropriate Mip Maps on the fly. I use a "mod" for BS2 using the excellent blue cockpit from RICARDO with the textures resaved with that DDS plugin. I recommend also the upgrade to BS2 (rather wait for a sale now in December and just buy the full BS2 instead of upgrade to save the hussle with multiple installs). [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] I5 4670k, 32GB, GTX 1070, Thrustmaster TFRP, G940 Throttle extremely modded with Bodnar 0836X and Bu0836A, Warthog Joystick with F-18 grip, Oculus Rift S - Almost all is made from gifts from friends, the most expensive parts at least
ShuRugal Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 What are your system specs? If you meet the requirements, I would strongly advise installing DCS World and buying the BlackShark 2 module. Graphics are much improved, and the flight model feels a bit more true-to-life.

I don't currently have the money however. My specs though are these Mobo - Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 RAM - 8GB 1333mhz GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB CPU - AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition @ 3.2GHZ OS - Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. I realise I'm probably limited a bit by my AMD CPU (although according to the "recommended requirements" on the BS1 e-shop page I shouldn't be?!), but I'm just looking at getting rid of the jaggies I get (even in 1080p) and making the dials a bit more readable without losing too much, if any, fps. Bee_Sting Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 You should upgrade, but then again I would take the jaggies over low fram rates. use gamebooster if you need cpu and gpu power.
ShuRugal Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Well, you won't be running world on full graphics, but you've got more than enough to meet the minimum (certainly more than the old HP DV7 i bought in 2008 had, and i ran BS2 and then World on that for a couple years). If money's a problem, wait until christmas sale, cant be more than a couple weeks off. Will definitely be worth it.

I'll see about using gamebooster but in the past it's not done a whole lot for me. Yes money is a problem, even in an xmas sale I don't have the money to upgrade to BS2. Plus I recently downloaded DCS World, tried the SU-25 and I was getting at best 20-30 fps. Even if I did have the money I can't justify paying for an "upgrade" when I get almost as bad if not worse fps and I definitely can't justify upgrading my PC to an I5 CPU (which would also require a change of mobo)! Raven_Morpheus Posted December 13, 2013 Author Posted December 13, 2013 (edited) Having said the above I might give BS2 a shot if I can round up some money... ...because I've just spent a little time tweaking DCS World using some files I found in a thread on these forums (thanks to msalama for his thread here) and I can actually achieve playable FPS with the SU-25 and it looks good so it probably is worth upgrading to Black Shark 2 - I just hope I don't take a hit on fps with BS2 compared to just plain DCS World. I do have a problem with a mission, taking off in fact, but I'll post a thread about that elsewhere... Edited December 13, 2013 by Raven_Morpheus
ShuRugal Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 The shark will have slightly lower FPS just because you are nearer the ground, but even on my old rig it was only about 5 FPS less
Bee_Sting Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Can you OC your cpu? OC'in can help in some cases.
Raven_Morpheus Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 (edited) Can you OC your cpu? OC'in can help in some cases. I can, but not by much (I think 4ghz is the limit of an ATI Phenom II X4 955 BE) and I'd rather not. I tried overclocking it to 3.6ghz (from 3.2ghz) when I first had it and fried the motherboard. Luckily the PC was still in warranty and I got it repaired FOC. If I had another PC to play games on I'd have a go at overclocking again, but my PC is now well outside it's warranty and I just don't have the cash to spend on replacing parts if I mess up the overclocking (I suspect I need to replace parts anyway as I've got intermittent issues with it).
