perationally, it seems their employment by the Egyptians (and other Arab Air Forces during the various Arab-Israeli conflicts) wasn't optimum. Frequently, they were tasked to be fighter escorts for MiG-17s and MiG-19s. This is a frequently cited reason for their high losses, but realistically? The Soviets didn't do anywhere close to a good enough job training these air crews. The best Egyptian Fishbeds had it were when Soviet advisors were flying them with the term 'advisor' having extremely wide goal posts as to be expected for the Cold War.

My sourcing is Famous Russian Aircraft MiG-21 by Yefim Gordon and Keith Dexter. I do offer caution if you hunt down this book: It's a fantastic 'hard facts' resource. But, I find some of Yefim's conclusions to be suspect and he does mislabel a thing or two here and there.

So, if you're making an Egyptian-Israeli mission, expect MiG-21s to drop like flies more often than not. But, if you're not going down that predictable path, there's also the Egyptian-Libyan conflict. There weren't big furballs like we saw during the Yom Kippur War, but there were air-to-air engagements. And here? The MiG-21 gets heavily favored. In fact, we see the MiG-21 perform better than the MiG-23. It underpins why so many export customers chose to stay with and acquire updated MiG-21s as opposed to getting the newer, more expensive, MiG-23 as they saw it as a bridge too far for a performance increase they didn't really need.

hm, not really. There's nothing to indicate that the training of egyptian crews after 1967 was on any worse a level then that of the IDF or other airforces. (other then propaganda). Tom Cooper and pilots during that period stress the intense trainings they went through and they did manage to achieve good results against the IDF (again, if you're looking past "we shot a hundred arab fighters and any losses we incurred were "technical""). And while sure, they suffered slightly higher losses then they inflicted, this can be attributed almost entirely to the discrpency in tech. even by 1973, most of the Egyptian MiG-21s were either PFs with only 2 R-3S as armament (fuel was often highly valued so taking the gun pod wasn't a common occurence), or older F-13s, which had a gun, but were still limited in terms of performance and endurance (they were preferred by Egyptian aces though), and the MFs didn't make up a sizeable portion of the EAF. On the otherhand the IDF had state of the art missiles like the AIM-9D on very powerful platforms such as the F-4 and the Mirage.

Actually I intend to edit a set of training missions for the -21, set on the Sinai Map, rather than doing a combat mission .... but I want to employ reasonably accurate dates, airbases, and weaponry, for immersion and realism. The missions are mostly for myself, as a way to get reacquainted with the -21, as I have not flown it on several years by now, but if they end up being fun I might share them at User Files 🙂  .. thanks again for all the details. 🙏

I highly recommend Tom Cooper's books for accurate information on the MiG-21s in Egyptian service, even just for training. in addition there are several pilot interviews online however they are sadly only in arabic, but hold a lot of information (they're about 2hrs each!).

As for your question, three of the liveries I have made for the MiG-21 were used on the MiG-21MF, which as others have stated, was the closest thing to the MiG-21BIS in Egyptian service. The liveries with red markings are post-1973 and from the 80s, the Early nile valley scheme was a picture taken during the war of attrition iirc? But the Nile valley scheme in general remained in use well into the 80s.

The fourth livery was based on a MiG-21PFS, which is a modified variant of a MiG-21PF, and was significantly different in both looks and capabilities then the MiG-21MF and MiG-21BIS, as it did not even feature an internal gun and relied on just two R-3S for armament, but was used quite extensively by Egyptian pilots even until 1973 and further.

Thank you for your reply. Well, if thats the Case, it should stay as it is.

I should note that this is the only photo that showed the aircraft in such a configuration, regardless I decided it would be fun to include but I can absolutely understand why someone would want a more standard configuration. if so please let me know and I will share a description.lua to make both tanks gray

  4. Hello, I am the creator of the livery, the tank is intentionally mismatched as an easter egg to match one of the reference photos (see attached image) I used in the creation of this livery, it was decided to keep it that way but I understand if you want the "normal" tank, and if so lmk and I will send you a "fixed" description.lua ba15c736e19685a69503c9e8303573da.jpg

I also decided to use the templates available to make this. Working with the roughmets for the first time was fun.

Hopefully I'll find the full names on the rails but for now, this will do! F-4E 68-0483 of USAF 90th TFS, 3rd TFW, Philippines.

nice work on the roughmets 👍

(side note: if you aren't already, you can put the green channel of the default rm over yours as a hard light layer and get a pretty good "template")

What resources do you use to make such stunning skins?

I'm trying to find 3rd TFW liveries but I'm having trouble reading the names on the canopy rails:

Now I don't do US liveries much, so I'd follow Lance's advice in that regard, but also a little tip I'd give is to use the reverse image search function (set it to exact image so it doesn't just spit out images of fighter jets). Using that method allows you to find sites that hosted the image you looked with, and they will most likely have other images as well. For example for the Komatsu air meet livery I only had one image of one side, and when looking for the other I couldn't find it anywhere, not even on Japanese sites like flyteam.jp, but I reverse searched the one image I had and it led me to, of all things a Hungarian blog that had a few other images of the air frame and allowed me to finish my work.

    Dear friends and pilots.

We apologize for the long update, but rest assured that we are working on improving our module (it was our mistake to make the update so big).
We are currently finalizing some scenes after our internal testing, fixing some internal bugs, and preparing the module for an update.

As planned, new airfields were added as announced in the road map. More than 90 new unique and historical buildings + some additional objects that we didn’t plan: an oil platform, new yachts, air balloon and etc... Added unique hangars for the F35 at the Nevatim airfield, as well as parking for them. Improved scenes of Cairo, Alexandria, Eilat and Jerusalem.

Thank you for your patience and attention.

I am attaching screenshots of the new update.

    Hello all,
So, it appears a lot of us missed the initial call to submit. Not sure what the distribution for that message was initially. I never saw it until after the decision was made (I don't spend a lot of time in the forums). I did note Wags' apology for not checking the user files before the decision. The clarity of the initial message read fairly vague. I would suggest a path forward for such endeavors should include expectation management and left/right limits. Something like:

Default Template Usage Required: Yes / No
Default Textures Required. (Not creating new engines, pylons, fuel tanks or anything not included in the default template)
    F-16C Block 50 c. 2007 (or listed timeframe) only: Yes / No
    Dynamic bort number requirement.
Maximum zipped file size allowed. (If different from the 300mb UF restriction)
    Allowed compression type. (BC7 etc)
File type required: (Zip / rar etc)
I am also of the opinion that the default liveries should be held to a higher standard.

I'm sure there is more stringent stuff there, but that would be a recommended baseline. Something I learned in the military is that instructions must be written for the absolute lowest level. Meaning, the people that need the most direction and step-by-step instructions. Just a suggestion.

    ***Soap Box time***
I want to address a few things starting with the attitude of "it's just gotta be good enough because details don't matter". If I may add my 2 cents here, I think that is a dangerous attitude to have as a livery creator. If I were going to combat in these jets, I wouldn't care, because I cannot look outside of my cockpit other than stepping to the jet. In DCS however, things like screenshots, external cameras, video creation, and other things exist. In that case, details do matter. Not to make this a "yay me" post, but I have spent over 20 years in the military with the majority of those working in/around/and with all of these aircraft, with the last 7 in the fighter community, I may have a somewhat informed baseline of how things look, feel, smell, etc. I think it's awesome the level of detail some creators put into it. When I show fighter pilots DCS the ones who are into it will immediately start saying things like "Oh, they got that right/that's missing" or "They always had dirt here", "that color isn't quite right", "they were never that dirty/that's a clean jet" or other small details like that. Their external camera was walking on the flightline every day and stepping to their respective aircraft.

I would also like to address download count. Download count does not mean quality. I just looked at my own user files list and my worst-quality skins have the most downloads (Including the most downloads of a certain airframe). This was due to either it being some of the first liveries available for a module, a fortunate position on the UF page, being released for a long time, or updates pushing them to the top of the list under the old UF structure. My best, highest-quality, liveries are at the bottom of my download counts for the same reasons. We all know now that great liveries can get buried under 30 spammed "shake n' baked" out liveries in the UF pages, which is fine. There is a large element of "right place, right time".

Lastly, I'd like to remind us livery creators why we are here. It shouldn't be for personal glory or ego. We are here to let people live out their dreams of being a fighter/attack/cargo/rotary/warbird etc. pilot/aviator which they may have not been able in real life. We owe it to them to do our best job possible, fully knowing that we will not get compensated with anything more than some recognition or admiration and also fully knowing that the rivet counters of the world will call out our shortcomings. Lest we forget that many of these aircraft are gone forever, or in the case of Marine Hornets and Harriers, soon to be gone forever. Maybe I am a little sentimental, but it's nice to see some of these aircraft preserved if only digitally. They can't all go to museums. We should have the same dedication to the jets that defended and served our respective nations. (Yes, I understand this is a video game). Paint your best jet.

I hope this is viewed as an azimuth check for all of us in this thread/community and not as slinging mud or personal insults. This was intended as suggestions and some constructive criticism. Thank you for your time.

    Incredibly well said. 👍

  10. Hello all, Since ED has updated the textures for the flanker, I do not recommend using my RMs with them since they sacrificed quite a bit of visual fidelity in order to give the depth effect present in normals which is no longer necessary, however I do still recommend you keep them for the Su-25 since ED has not updated it's textures

  11. While I appreciate Leehy reaching out to Roughmaster and I am sure that Rough will absolutely more then deliver on the european liveries, I am still a bit disappointed with the choice for the rest of the liveries. I have redone my Egyptian F-16 4 times since I started learning livery making three years ago, and so I hope you can understand it was a bit shorthanded to then pick someone else to do this livery for inclusion ingame.

Very nice work, really looking forward to try it out, both this one and the upcoming from the developers!

One thing though, I think the underside should be aluminium and not light grey for this particular skin?

I asked about this some time ago:

you are probably right, I think it's silver paint. but RN the focus isn't on the livery so much as it is on the textures in general.

    Hello everyone
I have already seen that for a while the JF17 bombs have been having problems. a first patch announced that they were repaired and that only SFW posed problems.
It seems that the LS 6s are still buggy.
After several tries I still have a vast majority that go completely wrong.

Attached is the .TRK of an outing 5 minutes ago where 2 LS-6 500 fired in TOO go anywhere.

Can we have some info about a general fix about those weapons ?

Thx for all and fly safe !
