Exactly! I forgot that!
In the 90’s I read an interview of the squadron leader of the Brazilian air defense squadron about an exercise between Brazil and French air force.
At that time Brazil was flying the Mirage III for air defense and France came with the Mirage 2000C armed with Super 550. France was trying to sell the Mirage 2000 to Brazil.
The commander of the Brazilian squadron said that he was going to be used as targets for their missiles, so he started to training a tactic developed by the British named “Beam” (I don’t know if this is the correct spelling of the maneuver) to fight the Serbian Mig-29 with Harriers.
In the exercise the result became equal to favorable to the Brazilian pilots, given a lot concerns and “little fights” between the French pilots. They knew that the Mirage 2000 was 1,000 times better than the Mirage III and that they had a superior training than the Brazilian (an air force with more financial resources has more training sections and are superiors, this is a fact).
This tactic works because the psychological effect on the enemy that does not expect this. Against the AI it has less effect because the computer doesn’t get pissed off if he loses the radar contact, but this affects a human being.
I manage a lot of victories using IR missiles against F-15C with aim-120 in a multiplayer game with friends using the “Beam”. My brother, who was playing against me, was pissed off because he couldn’t fire on me and I used the R-27ET or R-73 to destroy his plane.
But when a person discovers what you are doing the maneuver lost more then a half of its effects. But it’s good against ARH missiles.
Of course I’ll not tell how to prevent the maneuver!!!! :smilewink:
