NVIDIA GTX 580 Released
Fopeyducker replied to audiohavoc's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok mines installed. Mixed bag of results across a variety of games. Might be user error or imature drivers. But on the whole very pleased. All run at 1900x1200 with everything turned on and maxed out. And obviously DX11 games now running in DX11 :) Built in benchmark or Fraps Min Average Max GTX285 GTX580 CS Source 255 358 Race07 44 127 228 52 146 269 BFBC2 23 41 65 52 75 114 GTR2 P&G mod 39 99 151 67 124 165 F1 2010 39 47 58 59 68 79 IL2 1946 14 51 63 14 51 63 Strange result maybe because I used a track? I've been thinking about posting so many times during this but EtherealN has done such a fine job and like Gadroc said has shown sooooo much patience it didn't bother. Sorry Vault you either really don't have a clue or you are a troll. :\

Is this your CPU? Core 2 Extreme Dual-Core X6800
-
Overclocking a i7 doesn't require specialist knowledge. In fact if you get lucky with the CPU, have a decent case and some thermal compound people have managed it on the stock cooler with only changing 1 setting in the bios! I'm pretty sure the vast majority of those that are at 4ghz are running on air, (probably not stock air granted but air non the less). Overclocking records mean nothing as it depends on how the CPU operates, how many operations per cycle etc. If a duo core at 8ghz can't perform in the real world as well as a i7 at 5ghz what's the point?

Sorry didn't look at the very first post, yes PSU & GPU upgrades would be your best bet at the moment

NVIDIA GTX 580 Released
Fopeyducker replied to audiohavoc's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I haven't got "double GTX 460" and I certainly don't play Hawx2 lol 460's in sli sometimes beats the 580, in certain benchmarks. Only the 470 and above beats the 580 across all benchmarks. As I said at the start of the thread if you have a 460 or 470 then yes, go sli. If not then get the 580. -

OK, I admit it, I'm weak :( My new GTX580 arrives tomorrow :music_whistling: -
What drivers do you have instlled for nVidia?
Fopeyducker replied to CarneyUK's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You sure it's 160.99? That driver must be nearly 2 years old! -
x16 is the speed, 2.0 is the type. As long as it's pci-e it will be able to take pci-e gfx cards

From Guru3d So probably closer to a month than two weeks -
Bought my first PC in '96 P233mmx lol. Haven't bought one since. Build your own not only is it cheaper, but you will get a better understanding of what's what especially if things go wrong in the future. You will also get more performance for your money. It's a very rewarding experience building your own PC's, even more so with your first one. As long as you have an IQ high enough to put a square peg in a square hole and a round peg in a round hole it is VERY easy.

PSU /Cooling counseling.

That's what hoovers are for :) -
How's he going to fill 4 slots with 2 sticks? I am correct, the only thing you need to look up, (when you get the extra stick), is whether they recommend filling the red slots or the black ones if you have 3 sticks of ram. Mine are in orange slots, black ones are empty. Not sure of the best combination with what you have at the moment.
-
Yes you need 3 sticks of DDR3 to use the triple channel. Yes it will improve performance though how much of an increase you will see in the real world day to day is much like the OC thread. Make sure the memory is in the same colour slots when you add the 3rd stick of RAM Yes you have DX11 installed but your DX10 card will only be able to use DX10 features. It is a NVidia card/GPU, just that it is produced/put together by Palit.

Well one of the pluses for the H50 is that you don't get dust clogging up the fins of the heatsink and fan as you do with normal cooling methods. Radiator & fan are mounted inside the case. You can see MadDogs setup here in the 5th post http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=61155 -

1. I'm using a 720 PSU at the moment which is plenty, though I think if I was going to purchase a new one today I'd probably go for something around 800-850 just to give me a bit more head room for the future. 2. I love my H50 best cooler I've ever had. And I've had some monster in my tower in the past. If the pump fails it will be exactly the same as a normal heatsink fan failing because it is powered by the same motherboard connector. So if it fails the alarm will go off and the PC will shut down. Plus being water cooled it will shut down at a much lower temp compared to a normal air heatsink. To be safe I bought a retail CPU which comes with the standard cooler. That way should my H50 ever fail I have a backup to use whilst the H50 is sent back for a replacement. I've not heard of any H50's failing, so if they do it must be very rare. -
That's good the D0's are the later chips and run cooler and OC better. Looking at your current temps I think they're not too bad for the standard cooler. Quite good in fact if your case isn't particularly well ventilated. As Slayer mentioned, (which I forgot), do buy some decent thermal compound when you purchase your new cooler. I've been using Artic Silver 5 for years and one little tube will 10+ CPU changes. It's about £5 or £6 a tube. Another brand that's meant to be good is Artic Cooling MX4. Either of these will give better results than the stuff that comes with either standard or 3rd party coolers.

A lock up or BSOD at a non critical temp will most likely be down to lack of voltage and or dodgy memory. It is worth waiting for the better cooler then you only have to OC / experiment the once. :) Do a google for Prime95 it is a seperate program to realtemp though realtemp does have a built in sensor test which will use Prime95 if it finds it. Do you know which 920 you have? CPUz will show the Revision either C0 or D0 about half way down on the right hand side on the first page.

ooer! Me want!
-
Ah! So did you follow the guide I posted? What is your overclock at, at the moment? What version of the CPU have you got? What cooler? What case?
-
My OC had no effect what so ever performance wise with DCS A10C. Is your OC stable Mower? Can you for example run prime95 for an hour on the "In place Large FFT" setting? Not the blend option which is the default.

Yeah I am waiting though I am starting to pull my hair out looking at all the cards overclockers has in stock and the money is burning a hole in my pocket. lol I don't think the GTX580 was ever meant to be "revolutionary" just a sensible step up. Lower power, quieter with a decent enough performance increase. I do find it strange that people, (talking about those on various forums I've see the past 24hrs) with modern high end cards automatically slate every new card that comes out because it doesn't offer a 100% performance increase over a card they probably bought a year or less earlier. Why would those with GTX480's, 5870's or 5970's be considering an upgarde already? It's like taking the family car you bought last year, (40miles to the gallon, 120mph), to the show room and then kicking the snot out of the salesman because this years model doesn't get 80 miles to the gallon and do 240mph? I think peoples expectations of new hardware is, well... That said, for those of use still using 200 series cards the GTX580 most certainly IS "revolutionary" and does offer 50-100% performance increase :) -
Very true, I think the only time you notice the OC on a day to day basis is if you do a lot of number crunching and or multitasking. I do notice a difference when I'm in photoshop for example, running batch commands or complex filters etc. Encoding videos will also benefit from a decent OC. I also notice it in CPU intensive games like Falcon4 was or even the Total War series. The only other time you will notice "in game" is if you have a high end GPU especially if it's an sli or CF rig. Where the CPU can become a bottle neck. But even ignoring all of the above it is nice to know that you £200 CPU is performing as well, if not better than the one your mate paid £1000 for

Go into the bios and change the BCLK Frequency to 180. Ignore everything else. No voltage changes or anythng, leave it all as you find it. This will give you 3.6ghz which is VERY easy & VERY safe for this CPU. It should last for years at that clock setting. You should be able to achieve this even with the stock cooler. But do check with realtemp & prime95 after you have done it just to be safe. Even if you have a crap case and stock cooler I'd be surprised if you go over 75 degs. If you do go back into the bios and drop the BCLK Frequency by 10, (170=3.4ghz), then check temps again. Make sure you run prime95 for at least 15mins to see what the temps level out too. If it starts to get really hot 80degs+ just stop the test early and adjust you bios again. With the current build at least, a more modern GPU seems to give the best performance increase.
