Any way to move the camera around real quick using the mouse?
rud replied to Flacracker's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
when I fly with the keyboard and mouse there's no substitute for mouse look. If Alt+C is too cumbersome than rebind it to something else, I usually use space bar (and rebind my cannon to Enter). In mouse look mode you can also hold down the middle mouse button to get movement side to side and up and down, you can even hold down the middle mouse button and scroll the wheel to move forward and backward. It's pretty easy to put the camera right where you want it when you get used to it. -
you can modify the config\view\labels.lua file to turn the labels into a simple dot, change their viewable range, and even change the colors for each side so they're all set to black (0, 0, 0) Unfortunately they're still not tied to fog, lighting levels, what have you. For me, spotting targets is done 75% of the time using JTAC support. If there isn't JTAC hopefully the targets are pretty much out and the open or moving and easy to spot. If neither of the above is true I usually just go home!

Sounds are too low in A-10C, what's wrong with my computer?
rud replied to Ramstein's topic in Bugs and Problems
I know it doesn't help you much, but this has never happened to me! Are you sure you didn't lower it yourself once? Windows keeps track of the volume you set each app too even if you close it and reload it. Hopefully now that you've increased it again it'll stick. -
I think I've seen this in Black Shark 1.1.1.0, I'm pretty sure it was new for Black Shark 2. I'm also pretty sure I had a T-72 fire an ATGM at my A-10C today. Was on a mission I made with only Shilkas and a few tanks, no wingman, and something fired a missile at me that missed.

I am curious, when doesn't JTAC send a datalinked target anyways? In some of the campaign missions or single missions are the JTACs set not to or something? I generally play missions I've made myself, and in all the ones I've made with JTAC I always get the target info in my TAD for easy identification and prosecution. I haven't ever entered a target in by coordinates and it makes me feel like I'm missing out on the fun!

[QUESTION] Regarding mouse control for Black Shark 2
rud replied to Daggoth's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
If you don't mind a bit of messing around you can accomplish this with the program PPJoy to create a virtual joystick and GlovePIE to script it. There are a couple of GlovePIE scripts out there already that can accomplish this, though they might need some tweaking to suit what you want it to do. I just tried this one in the A-10C and it worked surpisingly well. When I left clicked it fired the cannon, surprised me :D http://sites.google.com/site/hristotodorov/mousetojoystick If you want to use the mouse with left alt like you're talking about just put an "If !Keybord.LeftAlt" at the beginning of the script and an "endif" right at the bottom. Things can get a little hairy if you hit left alt while in a steep turn, but a less kludgy tweak to the script would probably fix that. -
I think it was removed when the Black Shark patch came out that revamped the sound engine (1.02?), quite a bit before the A-10C's time. Shame really, I used to love loading that station up with custom music and fly around the Maykop area

Training lessons 1.1.1.0 only wiith default keys?
rud replied to Polar-eX's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Not sure which training you're doing, but the TMS has different functions depending on whether you press and hold it (long) or just tap it (short). Make sure you get not only the right button but for the right length of time. -
Someday I wish they'd add a combined trimmer mode. The central position trimmer mode is my favourite, but even with a dead zone I can't always get the stick and pedals completely centered so I am forced to use the timed mode or suffer frustrating moments of no input (and these happen at the worst possible times, don't they?) A combined mode would wait for the center position, but if that wasn't attained within a short time delay then go ahead and turn the controls back on anyways like the old mode. Maybe we'll see it in BS 3: Red Dawn in Vegas ;) Knowing where those variables for the "neutral zone" are is great though, I can't wait to play with those and see if I can get the central position mode working better for me without needing to use dead zones on the controls.

The New Flight Manual--Coax Propaganda, Maybe?
rud replied to Smokin Hole's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I apologize if someone covered the basic theory already, but... For the same mass, moment of inertia is higher if that mass is further from the center of rotation. For the simplest case of a point mass the moment of inertia is just mass times the squared distance from the axis of rotation (m*r^2). A 1 kg mass 10 meters from the center of rotation has 100 times the moment of inertia of a 1 kg mass at 1 meter. Since coax heli's do away with the whole tail rotor assembly there is a lot less weight at the far back end of the aircraft. That mass is far from the axis of rotation for both pitch and yaw so getting rid of it helps lower those moments of inertia a lot. A lower moment of inertia means less resistance to angular acceleration, so the Ka-50 can whip itself around faster, so we love it that much more -
I use the slider with a very similar curve to the one posted by HiJack, but mine's actually a little more square at the ends: And no, making the scrollwheel speed break would be difficult, since it needs to be held down for a bit of time to actually deploy/retract fully. It's great for switches though, I use mine for the boat switch. You could use the scroll wheel button (not scrolling, but pushing it inward like the middle mouse button) and pinky + wheel button to retract or something. In my profile I happen to use the D button on the throttle for speed break with pinky + D to retract.

I made a thread on this too a while ago (http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=78310), there seem to be a lot of related incidents with gear failure on takeoff. A lot of times it's just a tire bursting but in the one I posted the tire was fine but the nose gear mechanism itself failed.

You sir are sick! :megalol: That would make me jump out of my chair every time the phone went off, heh. Then again it might make for a nice alarm clock...

Sometimes when someone tries TrackIR for the first time everything works fine right away, but for myself and from some of the posts I have read the first feeling is buyer's remorse. Probably, at first it won't work as well as you think it should and it will feel anything but natural. With practice and some tuning of the TrackIR profile it really does become an intuitive and indispensable controller. So expect some teething problems, but I don't know anyone who's practiced with one more than a few hours and didn't fall in love with it.

I had 2 cbu-105, 6 GBU-12, and 6 AGM-65D with enough fuel to bring me just under 100% max takeoff weight (I think it was around 60% fuel). Pretty damned heavy, but not quite excessive.
-
ok, I guess it's all the same bug then. I'd only seen first hand and heard of tires blowing on takeoff once in a while, not full on gear collapses or a stuck gear like I did. Interesting tip about lightening the load on the nose wheel, I might start doing that from now on.

I wish I had a track to go along with this, but the sim crashed when I exited the mission. With random failures and bird strikes turned off, as usual for me, I began my takeoff roll from Kutasi on a mission I must have played two dozen times. I heard a loud bang at about 85 knots. First thought was, "Damn, I hit the pinky swith at about 65-70 knots but nosewheel steering must have remained on and my tire blew" but a quick check of the indicator told me the steering was off as it should have been. Making the decision to go ahead and take off I got up in the air and tried retracting the gear. Nose gear stayed down but the rest came up. Then I noticed that the nose gear indicator wasn't green so the wheel was down but not locked I suppose. I cycled the gear once, twice, couldn't get the nosewheel up or get it to lock. Hydraulic systems both had good pressure. A check from the outside view showed that the tire had not in fact blown as I thought it had, it looked fine except for the fact it was still down. Thinking back to the rest of the takeoff, it *had* seemed a little smoother after the bang than it would have been with a busted tire. Circling around for a landing I realized I couldn't get either the landing lights on with either landing or taxi settings, which I suppose may have been beause the nose gear wasn't locked. Upon landing I was able to verify nose wheel steering was still toggleable and working correctly and was honestly very relieved not to have the nose gear collapse on me despite a fairly hard landing. Rolled over to the parking area and chalked this up as an abort. Again, really wish I had a track to go along with the explanation, but does anyone have a clue what may have happened here?

The "clickable" mouse-look of Ka-50 - future patch?
rud replied to Herbie.no's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Thank God! I have asked about this feature several times since it was so useful in Black Shark. Bug or not, I just wanted it back and it seems to work just fine. -
I've always wanted TrackIR to be active in the parachute view. Maybe someday...

I'm going to try to make a video this week that shows the sheer amount of awesome fun one can have in the A-10C using a standard keyboard and mouse. I swear it works really well, but there aren't a lot of voices expressing similar opinion. I've also got a full controller setup (HOTAS, pedals, TrackiR), I've been on both sides of the fence and the grass is green everywhere. DCS has some of the best support for controller customization, the programmers obviously spent some time making cursor key input smooth and effective, and it has the very best mouse look of any 3D game (5 DOF with my mouse? Thanks!). All of that adds up to a surprisingly fun ride without the need to buy more peripherals than you want.

The "All combat scores deleted" message only pertains to your currents sortie. If you go out and kill enemy 8 tanks, then kill a friendly AWACS you lose your kills on those tanks. You don't lose all the combat scores you got from other missions thankfully!

just to clarify, do you mean the entire HUD is out of view, or just the pitch ladders? The ladders can drift if you're flying in a cross wind, it's by design and there's no way to change it so they're centered. If you're entire HUD is off center that's a little different. Probably it's just your pilot's head has moved. If you don' t have TrackIR the mouse look is still very flexible. Hold down the middle mouse button and move the mouse around and you should be able to get your head where the HUD is in view again. You can also hold down the middle mouse and scroll the wheel to move your head backwards and forwards.

I play on the keyboard all the time. You can setup some pretty good controls, and once you get used to them you can do just about everything, though air to air refueling is something I've yet to master without my X-52. I use the WASD keys for the coolie hat, TFGH keys for the TMS, home end pgdn and delete for CMS to name a few. It doesn't matter WHAT you use to control the sim as long as you get it so it's comfortable and you practice, practice, practice. It's just as natural now for me to hold a hat up for 1 second or hold down T for 1 second to mark my SPI. They're both just TMS up in my mind.

If you configure the slider axis in DCS you can get around the jitteriness that most X-52 sliders develop with use. Adding deadzone, and minimizing x-saturation gets you 3 discrete levels of zoom and eliminates the shaking. You can vary the minimum and maximum levels of zoom by changing y-saturation: If you want to mess with a "user curve" you can get even more "steps", here's my current settings: I used this in Black Shark but forgot about it in the Warthog until just now, glad I looked in this thread!

thumbs up to lctrl+z. I have both time accel and time slow on my HOTAS. There are times I don't mind spending the few minutes listening to JTAC and times I don't want to hear them do their spiel. Time accel allows you to fast forward, and makes JTAC sound like he's a chipmunk. Usually I'm fine for the first couple calls, after a while if it's single player I tend to want to fast forward through, and the sim lets you do that!
