  1. It's a 3 position switch [anti-Ice/off/Dust] both can't be on at the same time and the indicators tell us that also. Besides what situation would require both? If your landing in unimproved areas then you need dust protection. If your flying in the mountains or its freezing and snowing then anti-ice. I knew it affected engine power in anti-ice. Just wasn't sure about dust protect. Guess I'll make it a habit to turn this to off after takeoff.

    Thanks for the reply ALpha

Actually, I would think you would need the 'dust' protection features with anti-icing to prevent pieces of ice being injested into the engine.

May not seem like ice flakes could do much, but you would be surprised how much damage a solid piece of something can do to a turbine engine, no matter how small that something is.

  2. In regards to doing a hammerhead in the Ka-50:

Does the 'shark's rudder work at low speeds? If so, you should be able to ease the nose over in a hammerhead enough for it to weathercock into the correct direction on the way down regardless of not having enough collective for it to yaw with torque.

Now if it'll actually do this, I dunno. I'm at work so I can't test it.

  3. Well, Janes did the excellent Apache longbow games over a decade ago...

Janes had a level of access that a Russian-based company like Eagle could only dream of. I also have this feeling that Janes used manufacturer's propoganda for sources for some of their modelling, as I swear the targetting and datalinking functions worked exactly the same as depicted in the sales videos in the sim's 'video library'.

  4. Then you should know that all my efforts are directed to sabotage any fighter line in DCS :P Bomber land baby :D Just wait for DCS: Spirit or DCS: Blackjack... The moment your poor Viper, Eagle, Flanker or MiG is spooling up there will be Tomahawks/JDAM's or Kh-65's heading to your base :D

    That gives me an idea...

  5. I'm curious if the difficulty in spoofing an already fired MANPAD has less to do with developments in seeker technology and more to do with the ranges in which they are employed? I mean, that close to a helicopter, the missile would probably have no problem telling the difference between engine exhaust and flare, especially if the seeker is already quite intently staring at the engine heat signature.

  6. Was your aircraft suffering any symptoms of combat damage? If not, it could be a latency issue.

Haven't done a MP game in BS yet but I have seen similar happen in other games. Basically comes down to his client seeing a hit on your aircraft model, and applying a damage texture, yet the server or your client not seeing it and thus not applying the effect.

  7. Anomalies is not the same as units having time to either advance or retreat after int. recon and while in combat applying military doctrine and sound tactics to defend themselves properly.

The dynamic campaign engine could also estimate friendly operations in the area and use proper assets to make any mission a real challenge. Combat situations would make a lot of sense and may even be easily readable from a tactical point of view for the pilot during briefing, thus giving the mission a purpose. Mission results would also affect the outcome on operational level.

Tactics during engagement comes down to AI, which is not what I was commenting on. I'll already admit that the ground AI in BS aint too hot, but then again neither was it in the earlier mentioned SH series (or have you forgotten how many times escorting DD's have slammed into freighters while simply doing a circle search... in clear weather). But the effects of enemies changing position realative to pre-op intel could easily come down to either triggering to have them start in different positions or stages of readiness, or simply have different missions in the campaign pool with different setups, but the same basic intel.

Also as to the effects of support opperations, could those not be reflected again in different setups in the mission pool, tied to what 'level' of the campaign you're in? IE if you're farther along in the campaign, the mission pool may, in general, reflect more successful operations of supporting units, or more effective presence of said units IN the mission, while ops lower on the campign score level might show lesser so. Assuming the individual writing the campaign isn't writing one where things go progressively pear-shaped as the campaign moves on.

I'm still thinking that a well built campaign with a good mission pool will beat a dynamic campaign in most situations. But that's my biased oppinion, take it for what it's worth.

  8. I hear you, however how does hunting, tracking, and evasion not fit in BS? With a dynamic campaign the intelligence is never 100% accurate. How would that not be realistic?

You do not need a dynamic campaign to create 'anomalies' in a mission. I have't picked at the triggering system in BS too much yet (still learning to fly the damned thing!) but what I've seen thus far suggests that it wouldnt be too hard to have a mission with the same kind of 'anomalies' that could also occur in sortie generated in a dynamic campaign, depending on how much varience the mission planner wants to include.

Of course, the guy writing the mission brief could also just lie about the threat assesment :music_whistling:

  9. I find dynamic campaigns to be unusually underrated in this community. For example, the biggest naval sim community www.subsim.com was close to boycotting UBI's release of Silent Hunter 3 due to the lack of a dynamic campaign alone. The developers listened and the release was prosponed until a dynamic campaign was properly implemented. Needless to say, it was a huge success. Now a second title plus addons have been released by the same team and there are rumors of a third release in 2009. Without that dynamic campaign however it would have been different story.

Ok, I need to chime in here in regards to that statement. Air combat sims (ANY era) and WW2 subsims are such totally different animals that they should never be compared. The reason SH3 and onward needed a dynamic campaign is due to the fact that a vast majority of what a sub did in the modeled era was hunting, tracking, and evasion. Silent Hunter NEEDED a dynamic campaign in order to provide those elements to a realistic degree.

A combat flight sim does not NEED a dynamic campaign to just be playable to a realistic degree. While it can help with replayability, I think the pseudo-dynamic branching system Eagle came up with may be capable of providing for that if properly used by campaign designers.

  10. I'm intrigued as to how and why you all have such monster beast machines, too . . . . grin.

The 'how' of it for me, is I just got back from Iraq a few months ago, and blew all my combat pay on a new box :D

The 'why' of it is that I dont like upgrading often, so when I do it ends up something monster and, thus, able to survive a while before needing another upgrade.

And in response to your other question, I cant see why it would overclock better. Assuming the duo and quad Intels of a similar series have a similar base clock, then they should have similar limits to how far they can be clocked, regardless of the number of cores.

Now if it's a heat issue and not a clock issue, well, maybe the quad intels have a better means of heat dissipation to the cooling block/heat-sink. I haven't picked at one before, so I have no idea.

  11. Black Shark won't use all four cores - so no, it's not worth it.

Apparently the quad-core intels overclock even better than the dual-core CPUs, though . . .

    I cant see why. Quad-core Intel's are just a pair of core-duo dies side-by-side.

And, just for grins, my system:

    Athalon FX-74 (times two)

    GF8800GTS G92 (times two)

Around 3gig ram (system has 8, but it only gets used when the system boots linux)

    Full CH HOTAS setup

    TrackIR 3

    Full water cooling

  12. Simple question here, but does anyone know what payload options are going to be modelled for the 'Shark?

I've already seen light rockets, Vihr's, and gunpods. I remember some discussion on freefall bombs, but dont remember which way that one went. I also remember Igla/Strela and R-anything being right out.

The things I'm interested in is, will there be other laser guided weapons beyond the Vihr (IE: S-25L's, KH-anything), heavy rockets, or submunitions dispensers available?

  13. I guess its, once again, time for The Hyena's (in)Famous Dartboard of Truth (also known as 'throwing darts at a GSA 12-month calander poster').

Using this amazingly accurate prediction technique, I now have the release dates for the following:

A-10 will be released on March 5th.

The AH-64 will be released on November 11th.

We will see a Hind somewhere around Augest 2nd.

And, finally, a new MiG-29 in 'Made by Federal Prison Industries', er, wait, that aint right *checks closest date* June 27th.

    Everyone happy now? :D

  14. Vikhir is a laser beam rider. Does this mean it flies in some kind of a laser funnel/tube?

Yup. It tries to center itself in the beam, with the missile's laser seeker looking to the rear instead of ahead. Advantage is that it cant be jammed (aircraft lock can be broke, but you can always ground-stabilize instead). Disadvantage is the missile stays in the beam and does not follow follow a more optimal flight path, resulting in a somewhat curved trajectory that bleeds kinetic energy.

    Still a damned fun weapon!

EDIT: In the time it took me to type that out, we get three more posts... I'm getting slow
