Anyone purchase the Thrustmaster AVA base for their Warthog
Waffle 1-1 replied to kmaultsby's topic in Thrustmaster
Interesting. I switched from the warthog base to the Ava and found the refueling, landing and random stuff easier on the first try. The wobble doesn’t bother me but it is an acquired taste, to say the least. I find the hardest part finding the center position, as you said. I find myself looking forward and back to the target a lot more, just to make sure I am stable and not overcorrecting. So far I like it very much, but my warthog base had a seriously sticky center position which is terrible for small corrections. -
How much do you use rudder pedals *after* take-off?
Waffle 1-1 replied to Sunbather's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
It’s a tricky one. The standard single player stuff is boring. Instant action missions make no sense from the perspective of WW2 warfare and there’s very few standard single player missions. The campaigns that you get with the warbirds are a joke. Which leaves you the paid campaigns or multiplayer. The paid campaigns can be excellent. I have been loving almost every minute of the Reflected campaigns I have flown and am flying. They are well thought out, you get a more immersive feeling and they balance being in the action with a strong focus on surviving rather than becoming an ace ten times over. The multiplayer business is currently not for me. I find it hard to not be able to pause and get some other stuff done when it pops up. I’m sure that will change again one day, and I am somewhat looking forward to Grayflag WW2. However if you have the time, I have found folks on even the more hardcore servers to be very friendly to morons like myself. I have tried to love “the other ww2 sim” as I have tried to love “the other F16 sim” but their dated, clumsy and clunky user interfaces keep me from playing them often. In other words: I’m used to DCS and I can deal with its inconsistencies better than with another layout and approach. I also find it easier to click around in a cockpit than to remember key bindings, so there’s that too. Each game has pros and cons. This is the game I prefer but I can see the good side of the others too. -
Why do I need the F-15E in my life? [no Razbam discussion please!]
Waffle 1-1 replied to Sunbather's topic in F-15E
About 15 to get in per person, and then you add the popcorn and a drink … two people will be 50-ish yes. But having visited Germany I also felt things were generally not as inflated as they are with us. -

I’ll skip the rest - you are entitled to your opinion and how you evaluate the value of a euro or dollar as much as I am. But me, American? Not quite. In fact we are neighbors. Greetings from Belgium! -
Mission 3, scripting error crash
Waffle 1-1 replied to ww3231's topic in DCS: P-51D Debden Eagles Campaign
I’ve had this error today when flying the mission. I confirm I saw blue 3 and blue 4 disengage in the flak fields when we crossed the coast, so my reasoning was they got hit. I recently turned off tacview so I have no means of checking what really happened to them. It did make the dialogue weird, but it for sure made me run for my life when lead and myself got bounced by some 15 bandits. Thankfully I made it back, with some sleek aero-holes added by some guys named Focke and Wulf. -

You are essentially buying a toy, regardless of which module you pick. I’m not a movie-going man but if I were, the f15 is maybe the same cost as two movies. Let’s say after 6 hours of flying I would break even against that. So I would do it. Chances of it breaking within those 6 hours are slim. Yes. The situation is sad and I do hope it gets resolved. But if this is a plane you want to fly: it is really fun and while I’ve been on a warbirds excursion, once I am done with that it’s back to the F15. It is not complete and you miss some creature comfort but what is there has been developed to a very high level of detail. -
Pretty dead in here. Losing hope...
Waffle 1-1 replied to RodentMaster's topic in DCS: A-7E Corsair II
I’m keeping all my hopes up. Next to the F14, this was the plane of my youth in Jane’s US Navy Fighters. I’d love to see the day to get a full fidelity model of it and bomb the living daylights out of anything on any map! -
I often lack a great deal of focus and so I split my time between the Wolfpack and Beware! Beware! campaigns. My love for the P47 won out and I spent a chunk of time flying that campaign first. So back to this one. It feels like a very familiar style: you are part of a larger war, your actions are of consequence but not to the point of single-handedly determining the outcome. Survive, don’t be a hero. It’s a style I like. As a pilot I should be able to decide if the engagement makes sense and then live with the consequences. I can only imagine being part of a real effort like this, but these missions give an armchair pilot like me a chance to get 1% of a clue. The missions are well made and give you a combination of the boredom of flying give or take the same route every other day whilst still making sure you always have the chance to get yourself into a lot of trouble. Now I’m not an ace fighter pilot, as demonstrated by my 4 confirmeds, but I am certain a better pilot can get a double or triple ace in this campaign. As with Wolfpack, I can’t recommend this enough. By chance I had just finished First Light by Geoffrey Wellum and I think some inspiration may have been taken from this excellent book. If you like the campaign, I recommend the book as well. Always nice to see some of the reality of the war reflected in a campaign I fly!

Short review - excellent campaign
Waffle 1-1 replied to Waffle 1-1's topic in P-47D Wolfpack Campaign
Great news and of course, feel free to use this review! -
I recently finished this campaign and felt like writing a short review here. If you’re on the fence about it, don’t hesitate and get it. My recent foray into warbirds started with the P47 and while I’ve found the airplane to be tricky to learn it remains my favorite of the bunch. Diving into this campaign, I was not a great thunderbolt pilot. I feel quite a lot more competent after finishing the last mission. It was especially interesting to fly the early p47, as I got used to the later variants with the gyro gunsight. At first climbing in formation was tough. The DCS AI is very aggressive and you need to be ready for their “here we go” behavior. @Reflected has a great tutorial on it, but even after that I feel it took more than a bit of practice to get it right. I do confirm what Reflected says: it’s not easy but it is definitely doable without blowing up your engine. Just make sure to warm it up properly and fly at optimum climbing speed. No need for water injection or anything. I do feel more comfortable flying off the squadron lead as this is the most stable AI. The others sometimes shift around which doesn’t help to keep a steady climb. What struck me most when reading the briefing and what stuck with me throughout the campaign is the advice to not try to be a hero but to survive. I tried, I really did, but ended up bailing out once and having to fly that mission again. Reason enough to play the campaign again, without becoming a POW. Other than that one slip up, I flew cautiously and sure thing I did not become an ace. 3 registered kills and 1 I didn’t understand was not given to me, I felt a sense of accomplishment nonetheless. Being part of the effort was just as good. All in all, I can’t recommend this enough. I’m well into the next one, Beware! Beware! for the Spitfire and it’s turning out to be an equally fun ride. Reflected has built these campaigns extremely well. You feel like you are there but you are just one of the pieces of a very large puzzle. Other campaigns sometimes feel like an arcade game, these feel very real without keeping you out of the action: almost always will you be able to get yourself into trouble if you want to. Great work and I really hope the sequel will be developed!

100% instant buy if you release Wolfpack 2. I have put Wolfpack on pause because I was mixing too much between modules and the jug is more demanding in terms of management. I always forget something and end up cooking the engine. But once Beware Beware and The Big Show are done I am committing back into the P47. If by then there’s two campaigns, I will fly them back to back!
-
The other ones are either out of early access or in the case of SA still being updated at the moment as far as I know. I guess that’s why it’s only the F15. But I guess that’s also the one that caused most outrage.
-
I asked for a refund and I was very happy they made no fuss and put the credit in my account. And after three weeks I had so much regret that I bought it back. It is an amazing module, even in this limbo state. I still fly other modules but this one is my main module. Except landing on the boat, it does everything you could want to do. You don’t get the hmcs and I struggle without the SA page of the hornet or the viper, but that is clearly a skill issue on my end because the radar is immensely powerful. If one day it breaks or disappears it will be a sad day. But I will have gotten my money’s worth of fun out of it.
-
I had the same reflex. I was out of the game for quite a long time, came back and fixated on the F15E to then hear the next week of these issues. When I heard of the refund option, I went for it. Now or never, right. And then I regretted it and got the Eagle back. I’ll live with the potential non-refund should that time ever come, but while I can I want to fly what is possibly the finest module in the game.
-
I got both at the same time so I kinda learned them in parallel. I can still somewhat easily switch but have to brush up on specifics with regards to certain weapons on each of them. Things that clicked better for me in the viper: AA radar & HSD page HARM usage with and without HST Toss/Loft bombing Litening pod (I know you can put it on the hornet too) & automatic lasing of targets Mavericks Use of the helmet mounted sight Things that clicked better in the hornet: Gunsight JDAM in TOO mode (once it got fixed this year even better) Autopilot modes Radios & navigation AAR Landing on a boat Both are good fun and very competent multirole jets. If you prefer one over the other on any level, get that one. Then trial the other one and see how different they are and whether you prefer that one. Overall, I couldn’t choose. Since getting an ultrawide screen, it’s easier to keep the viper hud and displays readable. I still miss my F15E. That had no thick hud lines and was most enjoyable.
-
Main problem for me is that it’s an easy fix but since 2.9 the fix breaks IC. If this could already be resolved, it would alleviate many issues. As is, it makes the hornet unplayable, the viper so-so if I dim the hud and the harrier’s screens hard to use but I know them well enough to not have to read them too much.

This is what’s holding me back. I’d like to see a changelog with actual updates being done, and I’ll buy it back on the spot.

I didn’t feel like entering the conversation, but here’s my take. I had the eagle and had it refunded. I’m still on the fence whether it was the right call, and I might end up buying it again sooner than later. I actually miss it sometimes. It was fun to fly and very capable in combat. I’m lazy so I missed the datalink the hornet and viper have, obviously a skill issue, but it made me less effective in crowded environments. Still, many regrets. I need a couple of drinks and I’ll buy it again

Slotting on ECW practically impossible (especially with VR) on ECW

A NEW DLC CAMPAIGN FOR THE Mi-8?
Waffle 1-1 replied to CHPL's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Definitely excited for this! The Hip has quickly become my favorite helicopter in the game even though I only bought it so I could have an alternative to the attack helicopters, thinking I would not fly it much. Whichever map you choose, I’m happy to see more content for this amazing aircraft! -
Oh I have time (I hope), in the meantime I’m learning the jet step by step. Easier landings are fine by me.
