How the heck do you do this (Corkscrew Roll)???
Shaderhacker replied to Shaderhacker's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I said a flight "game". I know the simulators are more accurate hence my comment that flight model matters - and when I say flight model, I don't mean just the avionics but also the aerodynamics around how the plane flies. -

That's Lock On though. Doesn't count since it's ED. -

It is a part of it.. try to do it in BF3's jet airplane that just go up and down with no wind resistance and can't be stalled, no true gravity or simulation of aerodynamics around the wing. Even better, try it in a game like HAWX 2. -

I'd love to see someone post the A-10 doing it. All the other flight games out there probably don't have a good enough flight model to pull it off. -

Thanks for all the info on the physics behind the move. I will check out the track when I get home. I have come to the conclusion that this maneuver is hard to do - and the flight model has to be very accurate. This is why I don't see it in the modern combat flight games of today (i.e. HAWX 2). Also, doesn't look like many even on these boards can do it. :P -
Did a search for your facebook page and couldn't find it.

I want to come join you guys! I just get home way too late in the evening (around 8pm CST). If you guys can stay around that late, I'd love to fly with you!

I'll take a look when I get home. Thanks!

I have it. Let's see it! -

It is called a Barrel Roll. It's just a PERFECT Barrel Roll! -

Can you demonstrate this in a P-51 vid please? -

Sorry, I reread what I posted and edited it. And you are right, I meant maintaining a course and a proper altitude. Look at the above video. He loses way too much altitude and it doesn't look very "circular" even though we are viewing from the back. So, I agree it's a barrel roll.. I just have never seen it done PERFECTLY before except in airshows.. -

I'm sorry but I don't really believe this. That is NOT what these other guys are doing in their aircraft. They are almost doing complete circles. I put up a challenge. Someone post a track doing this manuever in P-51 so I can study it. This P-51 losses too much heading but the first video, the plane keeps it's current heading. It is *NOT* as trivial as it seems. -
Yes, I understand. My approach requires a long runway. :megalol: As I get better, I'll take the more practical approach.
-
In all my years playing flight sims, this is the most beautiful and graceful manuever I have ever seen. I tried my best to do this in LockOn Flaming Cliffs to no avail. I would LOVE to learn how to do this manuever. First off, what is it officially called? Secondly, has anyone done this with the P-51 sim yet? If so, please point me to a link!!! Lastly, HOW? It's not a typical roll.. so how do you keep your plane heading straight and roll the aircraft around the X-axis (parallel to the ground) WITH going up and down in altitude?? The clip is here: Go to 11:14. Simply Amazing! -M P.S. How do you get the message editor to display the picture of the youtube video instead of using a link? YOUTUBE doesn't work.

120 approach is ideal.. but 150 approach at a lower altitude will still get you good landings if you flair her longer and let the plane slow down before touchdown at 90-110mph or so. Learning to land from the landing tutorial is a little unrealistic as it places the hoops right where you should be in 3D space. Trying to picture those hoops from a mission without them is impossible. You have to *feel* your way to the runway. There were many times that I got the right altitude and speed, but was too far away from the runway.. ended up pushing the throttle to gain more speed and then losing control of the plane as I approached.
-
I like approaching the runway at a little over 150mph. It keeps the controls stable. I've tried approaching the runway at slower speeds, but I find that keeping the airplane straight becomes too much of a chore as the plane starts to move all over the place. The P-51D also appears to bleed airspeed rather rapidly the closer to the ground you get. When I see the runway, I approach it at a higher speed so that I can line up along with it and coast it down by flaring. By the time I touchdown, I'm below 100mph. -M

UPDATE: Here is my cross wind landing. Sheesh this is hard to do. I can NOT keep the plane straight... Any pointers would be helpful.
-
Thanks guys for the comments. I'm going to keep practicing to get it down. I don't like landing with the 2 front wheels as I almost always make the plane nose over. LOL! -M
-
I took off from the runway with some trouble (even that's not easy) but I managed to get lucky with the landing. I've always bounced off the ground at least once, or destroyed the landing gear. :( Even after I landed safely, I had a little hard time trying to keep the plane straight as I came to a stop. Amazing how hard this plane is to fly. I commend those that flew it!

I reinstalled the sim and was able to switch skins while still doing the campaign. Don't know what I botched before but it's working now.
-
Ah. That's very good point. I always wanted to look at my training to see where I went wrong. :( In any case, the campaign is basically a rundown of all the training missions and more without the aid. Those can be replayed and watched, so I should be good. Excellent simulation! 10/10 in my book. -M

After having to look on the internet to force permissions and change the mission files so they weren't READ ONLY, I was able to modify the skins in the Mission Editor (finding the object icon, loadout, and change). All has been changed now, accept now my Campaign doesn't show in the window to select the campaign. The only way to play the Campaign missions now is to just open the mission from the browser. Not sure why the campaign broke when overwriting the mission files. In any case, this should also be a gameplay selectable pull down that is saved with all the other attributes the user sets in the Options menu. -M

OK. I'll try that and report back. Thanks -M

UPDATE: Just tried to put the Red Tails skin into the directories and it didn't work. Directory structure for skin is as follows: Bazar\Liveries\P51D\<directory with the .dds files and the .camp file> I copied this entire folder into the \en\Aircraft Operations\1 folder you named. The skin is not replaced. Campaign mode doesn't work either.
