with screen finally on
-
unfortunatelly it is still work in progress - I've done minor updates to the website but I'm still quite behind. there is bit more info on FB https://www.facebook.com/pages/SimPit-Technologies-Ltd/118179234934114?ref=hl and I'll be updating the website in day or two (hopefully)

some new updates on the flatpack frame

contrast, light tolerance, colors, good smooth curved surface without tensioning, easy to build DIY frame. The Black Pearl coatings works really well with 3d as well
-
Fair question - well, everybody knows when you are shopping for monitor with best contrast you should always pick the one with blackest screen and less glare - pretty much same applies to projection screens. apart from extremely high incident light rejection the coatings almost completely eliminate motion blur, rainbow effect and enhance projector contrast ratio - i.e. unlike on standard screen you can really see the massive difference between low contrast (500:1) and high contrast projectors (10 000:1). The coatings are also calibrated for neutral white point so if you have ICS calibrated projector the image is exactly as it should be. - not mentioning the material is incredibly tough for it's thickness so it doesn't need any tensioning yet it is flexible enough to create nice smooth curvature.
-
hi peter, the 0.8mm thickness can be cut with sharp craft scissors and bit of elbow grease. The 3,8mm material needs good jig saw and bit of patience. both materials can be drilled and bent. The 0.8mm would be my choice if you want to make there some notches. what is the screen diameter you would need?

few new pics - with dogfight boss cockpits

LOL - This company is making HMDs for more than a decade and this set is on market for a few years :-D . There is so many other companies making better equipment than oculus for much longer - it's a shame all the "experts" on VR never head of it until very recently (no hard feelings ;-) You can either have good functioning HMD and it will cost or you can have a low grade broken toy that is cheap. That's the fact. The good news is there are HMDs which are actually delivering good results and delivering fully functioning product - these guys are actually pushing the field forward. All oculus is doing is limping far behind with lot of noise. The real HMDs are far ahead of oculus.

http://sensics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/dSight-spec-Mar-14.pdf - real full HD - 3640 x 1080 (1920x1080 per eye and no pre-stretch), good 9 sensor positional tracking, good quality optics instead of cheap plastic, augmented reality, good FoV (+/-75º from center as opposed to +/-43º on Oculus) and eye tracking for depth of field.

bongo - WOW, that rift is SO fantastic, everything is soooo REAL - I never experienced anything like that before! So much detail and everything is so sharp.I can even have a look over my shoulder without turning mu head. i can even see the ants on the ground and squirels in the trees! WOW - there is nothing better than oculus. I will even read my emails, books and watch TV on it, that will completely replace everything including my house, fridge and toilet. Screw those guys who say otherwise - never had it on but it is so Awesome - internet says so - so it must be true. I'll be living in virtual world. WOW and if I buy this version and I find i can recognize a house from horse they will sell me NEW version with few extra pixels!!! And then another one and than another one and then another one. WOW That will be better than real life:pilotfly:. Feeling happier bongo? OK - now reality check - oculus is alternate technology which is suffering heavily from shortcomings because of technological limitations and quite frankly in it's current state it is regretfully inferior to everything else - BUT IT HAS A 3D EFFECT WHICH IS SO CUTE!!!! that's it. Here is bit of history - what is the oculus based on and where the ideas came from http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=11970 Palmer was contributing as well but it was joint effort - Once palmer took everything by himself to kickstarter that was it for new fresh ideas and nothing new came up pretty much since. Everybody believed things will get better and the development will fly forward - Instead the whole DIY creative community died, all development stopped and oculus started pouring money and creativity into scam marketting instead of bringing new things. If you tear things done the only innovative thing is marketing and selling hype. That would be probably the reason why out of all companies Oculus was bought by facebook because they are the best positioned to harvest the hype. If it was about product and HMD tech companies would jump in instead of social media which are the best for amping up hypes ( has anybody wondered what's in it for facebook?) Kuky - that's bang on a money and the exact progression I went through: Excitement, novelty wears off, reality check, denial, resignation. Oculus made me go through it again but this time it was very shortly lived :-) PS: yes I'm worried about the way software developers are pressured from Oculus. I like complexity, detail, and challenge - that's what PC excels in - For simpletons games with funky effects we already have xbox, playstation and wii PPS: good bye and out

sorry for not jumping on the band wagon and joining the delusional ranks. Sad fact is that the laudest screamers and oculus thumpers have very limited technical knowledge, no clue what is going on with VR and 3D and just parroting the official propaganda. Go and get the Oculus and prove me wrong - stop living in a fantasy. Or just start "Oculus Rift worship" thread if you don't like the facts. This thread is about how DCS World could work with Oculus device - not about supporting Oculus personally. And things won't improve if you'll keep living in a lalala land. As for VR capabilities - oculus even in CV1 speculative version is still 15 years behind PC gaming with incredibly poor angular resolution with exactly the same image quality as VR920 back in 2008 - if DCS will support Rift they will have to take into account that. And for anybody who want to say oculus have bigger FoV - yes, and that's exactly why the resolution looks so bad - it has few extra pixels over VR920 but those are smeared across much bigger area - are you seriously expecting EVERYBODY should be forced to accept the lowest standard and halt all progress and development just because of one gadget some people might buy? Really?!?

If you will love the Elite: Dangerous on Oculus for exactly the same reasons why it completely ruined it for PC. I was expecting something in style of X3: Rebirth - instead everything is big, chunky with focus on keeping the detail low and everything sooo simple (not in a good way), all the fonts are over sized so everything can be easily recognized on Wide FoV and low resolution. The cockpits, all systems and even dialogs are so simple that's feels like they are assuming everybody is completely dumb or blind. On PC monitor it feels incredibly shallow and cheap (imagine playing iphone game on PC). Sure - it will make the rift experience excellent and whoever is on the Oculus bandwagon will have a great time because of the 3D effect but I wouldn't advertised it as a PC title, spectacular, awe inspiring or beautiful because it is none of it ... it is a rift title with all the consequences
-
"- They so far sadly had no ground targets, but it was possible to see the flight model offered a new level of immersion" - oh dear - yes there are ground targets - and are visible on any monitor - unfortunately not on a rift due to low angular resolution (equal to monitor set to 320x200). They should be trying the rift on FC1 LOMAC or older games - the old games from end of nineties seems just like made for rift and actually look pretty good on it (you can't notice much loss of detail). After seeing Elite: Dangerous (my worst disappointment in long time) i'm coming to conclusion that the only way how to make game playable on rift is to completely ruin it - ie. make the game shallow and exchange everything that has been achieved in past 15-20 years for cheap 3d effect. I sincerely hope ED won't get under pressure to ruin the DCS World in the same way frontier did. I hope in future there will be clearly divided titles for PC and Rift titles. Edit: it would be actually good idea to ask ED to remaster the original LOMAC for rift instead of trying to fit a square peg into rounded hole
-
i might chip in - Mot is freezing too :-) for anybody interested to learn what is angular resolution and why it is the only thing that really matters http://gizmodo.com/5926295/your-tv-is-a-retina-display and for the really keen http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/faculty/healey/download/tap.12.pdf

thats how vuzix presented the technology at that time and i didn't physically took it apart (it is some time since i've sold it - 4 years). It definitelly had a pitch, yaw, roll and i distincly remember the "fun"when i was trying to read the instruments by bringing my head close enough forward to be able to read it. I'll look into it.

I would say this will go to textbooks as one of the biggest cons and pyramid scams in a history of Kickstarter. Summed up bluntly and without political correctness: 1- Palmer took idea from forums that was available for free 2- sold it on kickstarter 3- swindled hundreds of thousands people out of milions $ with false promises 4- sold out, pocketed the money and left without delivering what he got the money for
-
it's tricky but it's the best representation - that's for sure. iphones/androids can deal with it although the image is bit distorted due to camera having different focal length/FoV than eye
-
- Eventually I have replaced the vr920 tracking with trackir and later with freetrack and the tracking was working like a treat
-
low latency tracking is a major thing but solutions are around for ages - what the rift was using must have been something from 90's and it was pointed out number of times with previous 3D goggles. Same the low latency problem - low latency monitors are standard for more than decade so going back to normal accepted standard is nothing revolutionary (it should be normal) - that was problem in 90's with LED displays and cheap phones - btw: that should have been one of the first thing they checked. Even amateurs who are into simulation bit seriously know about it and one of the first questions is "how is the latency" - but it's not related to sickenss but their reaction times. If rift team had no clue about it before they really neglected their homework. Anyway - the optical train and distorted image is far greater problem and the major corporate of sickness (yes - systems with bad latency and poor optic and image warping will make you sick bit faster but systems with poor optics and image warping will make you sick anyway - this problem is not problem isolated only to rift but it is common in any system with big FoV)
-
That will be awesome. you can take screen shot anytime by pressing printscreen and then open any image processing software (i.e. photoshop) and press Ctrl+V.
-
EVERY professional in the industry knows it - it's not exactly a secret. BTW: Carmack is a clever guy but in this field he is keen beginner who is learning the ropes - check his bio end experience

The low persistence is just a placebo and fooling people around with marketing. The real problem is in the plastic optics that are generic and imperfections in human eye - it's not a common knowledge but one third of world population have some form of astigmatism and no single eye is perfect. The image you see through eyepieces/optics is not corrected properly and gently distorted to what you are use to see with your eyes naturally (the optical train is incredibly short for the level of magnification and even tiny mistake will show up severely amplified - cheap plastics are no material for high quality optics). Of course the brain will compensate but it causes eye strain, fatigue and together with lack of motion clues it's the leading source of nausea. Anybody who was in a simulator with very big fov and crooked warping will exactly know what I'm talking about. If you want to try it for yourself ask somebody with very mild correction glasses/astigmatism and wear it for an hour or two (btw: if somebody has frequent migraines and tiredness one very likely reason could be astigmatism). All those things can be corercted and it is not exactly a rocket science - however the so called "experts" would have to do their homework first - but I have a feeling they know otherwise they wouldn't come up with such crap like the low persistence (fooling people with placebo is cheaper than solving the actual problem).
-
exactly my point - it's just a display with corrective optics - if you replace the rift ancient display with galaxy tab 2560 x 1600 you get far better resolution in and instant (and it is samsung) Or grab the rift lenses, put there surface pro 3 and install warping/blending program and you'll have 2160x1440 goggles and you don't even need any pc anymore... and all tablets/cells have excellent accelerometers and cameras for enhanced positional tracking - there is hydra, trackIR and tons of others that couls have been implemented ages ago. even the old VR920 had 6 dof so it has nothing to do with developers - rift pocketed the money so why should everybody else do the work for them?

+1 on castAR. Stereoscopy is actually almost 150 years old technology and 3D HMDs are commercially available since 1994 so it's not exactly a novelty. I think with the development of the oled displays and nvidia reversed lightbox technology which is pretty amazing and true revolution there is a bright future for HMDs - providing nobody will pull the handbrake on progress in exchange for profits (as it often happens) bongodriver - if you take the OR apart you will find out it's not exactly a rocket science and there is nothing much to it. It's pretty much unchanged since the free plans emerged on mtbs3d and thingiverse - just the outside packaging improved and they added a strap ...
-
Just to clarify - are you saying now the rift is unsuitable for flight simulation? because I had a impression earlier on that you were saying exactly the opposite. I'm definitely behind kuky - the way they present it it sounds like it's the best thing since slice bread, revolution is stereoscopy and over all fantastic experience - which it's none of that. FIY - I'll tell you sweet little secret - the alleged upgrades are only matter of swapping displays which are already available in korea, china and taiwan including those 1440p (alright - there could be minor mods too). The bottom line is that the improved versions are way how to scam more money from people - the money is in selling the hype - not the actual product. They are just drip feeding the market bit by bit to milk it instead of delivering what they promised 2 years ago and what they got the money for in the first place. And as long as you'll believe the marketing scam they will carry on cheating you and everybody else who supported them in kickstarter and through the devkits
