  1. 1) yes - had is more precise term - although I'll have here another kit which friend of mine was going to bin - anybody interested can come and try it 2) yes - do you know development kits are released for testers to pointing out flaws and weak points so the developers get the product better? (although normally the testers get paid for it) 3) yes - seriously - do you know that if you accept the marketing scam instead of demanding real improvements the OR stereoscopic goggles will suck the same as the old models? 4) probably with the same success that rift can be alternative to monitors and projection systems :D ;-) you can get the exact picture and screenshot from CV1 WITHOUT the CV1 - option 1) just upscale to 1440, take a screenshot and view on normal monitor. Option 2) take a screenshot at 2560 x 1440, use photoshop and crop the image to 1280 x 1440, use the dk1 screen shot as a guide and use the photoshop warp function to squeeze the image to the active area (same as DK1) and you got exactly the same image the CV1 would have if they will use 1440 display. - i can upload screenshots 5760 x 2160 where the 2160 covers the same vertical FoV as rift (90º) here is the full image 5760 x 2160 (FoV is set to cover vertically 100º angular sizes are 1:1 with real life) here is detail of instruments in 2160p - that's the image resolution the projection systems have and the minimum rift deserves and here is the image resolution the hypotetical CV1 will have if they will use 1440p and the last one is with DK2 resolution
  2. Oh - so you never had or tried rift - now I get it :-D. That makes you practically THE expert on rift :-D ok - so once you buy it or try it I suggest you try the 4 tricks I mentioned earlier - it really makes things less frustrating with rift + DCS and perhaps you won't feel like you bought a sugarcoated lemon. FYI: if I was a complete bastard I would suggest that everybody would BUY the rift because it makes almost everything look better after you sober up from the hype - I even appreciate my monitors bit more now :D :D. And BTW: Feel free to make any suggestions how to make the things better - just because I refuse to to get brainwashed by the OR marketing doesn't mean I'm not interested in the technology or help to find a way how to make things work
  3. Q 1: do you have OR? Q 2: do you play DCS on it? Q 3: how are the screenshots subjective? (hint - it's a screenshot!!!) Q 4: if you think it is subjective - can YOU read the instruments, MFDs and recognize targets without banging your head on the wall/table constantly in attempt to zoom in? Q 5 can you post your screenshots?
  4. I did noticed but it is negligible because it still feels like having big blinds on sides and I don't have any real peripheral vision to speak of - it still feels quite restricted. to be hones 3 monitors give me far better view and situational awareness. There is undoubtedly small improvement in FoV but not enough to justify the whole hype around it or to thow out my old monitors. And it's definitely not quite big enough to have any profound effect on vestibular effects (apart from causing bad nausea for some reason - and I normally never get sick in the air or sims) BTW - few tips how to make OR at least marginally useable for DCS: 1)setting BIG font size on mouse hover (you know which switches you are using) 2)setting BIG font on HUD (you know the speed and altitude without guessing) 3)setting labels font BIG and using # symbol instead of the . (you know where the targets are and what you are shooting at) (labels.lua) 4)using Peters P radio clickable menu with BIG font (you can use the commands and move the radio to more comfortable position)
  5. Just something for you to consider: 1) not attacking the product in any way - that's how OR is and how it performs. 2) I'm attacking only the myths and delusions surrounding OR 3) I'm giving you the opportunity judge for yourself THE REAL THING yeah - right - and rift will be also cure for cancer and world hunger...
  6. - that's the real output. You can see how the 1920 x 1080 is divided and cropped. Switch to HD and you can seee the "clarity" of instruments and "Quality" of image (nothing to do with DCS - which has fantastic graphics). FYI - you can actually see the video in 3D WITHOUT any goggles - here is how http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-view-stereo-graphic-images/ (although only as a thumbnail - you can see the 3D is quite good fun but I dare you to read the instruments :-D )
  7. Cheers - indeed facebook has nothing to do with it. Also I'm realistic and I really don't expect somebody who is considering to spend $300 on OR will ditch the idea and will spend suddenly $6 000 or 65 000 on pro simulation system :D. But from previous photos you can see why it makes me laugh when people who never tried OR are saying OR will replace projection systems or even old monitors. Yes - it has immersion effect due to isolation and 3D effect but it has no absolutely no detail - it's absolutely useless beyond basic entertainment and for flight simulation completely inadequate. I've spent fair share of my pocket money on 3D goggles so I'll be the last one to stop anybody to buy one - but if you do I'm happy to tell you what you are buying. Bottom line is why should I pretend the image quality is better than it is? What is the point of denying facts and reality? What's wrong with showing somebody who never had 3D goggles before or never seen OR in reality what it is and how it looks like? So far everybody relies on chinese whispers and information fabricated by the rift marketing. I've done about 600 -800 hrs with various 3D goggles (I already owned VR920 which I purchased in 2008 and I've tried lot of other 3D goggles as well) so the "WOW - it's in 3D" factor is long time gone. After finding out the reality about OR for myself I personally feel really ripped off and genuinely cheated - the image was crap and the immersion was the same as with any old 3D goggles. From the hype and advertising I've expected something great and nice picture - not something that is worst than my 5 year old equipment.
  8. I deal with abuse from delusional OR fans on daily basis and my motives are simply to bring some reality and facts into the discussion. Lot of people are misinformed and are purposely led to have a false expectations about OR. I'm very sorry if the reality is different than your fantasies but that images are real and that's how it looks. Note - and I would like to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR - that I'm not saying buy this or that (or don't) - it's your thing what you do with your time and money.
  9. the mig 29 pic is DK1, the other one is DK2/CV1 as per present announcements (source wiki) - you can upscale image on ati cards quite easy - you won't be able to physically see the image improvement in rift because of the display limited resolution. But you can take screenshot and view it on monitor which has usually more than double the amount of perceived pixels. You'll find that any honest DK1 owner (and I'm sure in future even DK2 owners as well) will confirm that's pretty much all the detail what you get. There is also plenty of screenshots on web which you can blow up to correct size to verify that's the fact and reality of OR. Of course if you'll view it as a thumbnail if will look good but once you zoom in our print it out in the adequate size you'll see it's a different story and the resolution is simply too poor.
  10. Bang on - you can see the resolution is very limited even when the image is small - now imagine the same image 2m x 2m infront of you to cover the 90º of your field of view ... btw - that's how it originally started way before palmer "got inspired" and put his sticker on it ;-) - similar things were available since 2010 for free (and that's why rift is what it is and looks like how it looks = sky mask with cardboard box on it ;-) )
  11. that's correct - it is a crop I don't think anybody has at home monitor that covers 90º FoV- the crop is correctly stretched and it is similar (actually better) than to what you see in the eyepice. Don't forget rift is stretching the image actos 90º/100º of your FoV and and the image resolution and the image you see has only 860 x 960 pixels for DK2 ((1920/2) *0.8 ). Imagine having 9 monitors around you (arranged 3x3) with each monitor set to resolution 286 x 320 - and that's your DK2 rift image quality
  12. That's actually upscaled image to CV1 this is image from DK1 how you see it
  13. For anybody who never tried OR - The screenshot mentioned above is fake (monitor screenshot) and has nothing to do with rift or reality. That's what it really looks like via rift (via the eyepice the image is bit more blurred so you can't see the jaggies so sharp) ->
  14. Mark Hungerford - www.rainman.tv will PM his email
  15. Just remembered, there will be one trident demo screen in sydney in few days ;)
  16. It's better to use the DCS input config. You can edit the axes and change either the slope (center will be slow and edges fast) or you can scale the sensitivity down altogether.
  17. it's not too bad, 3 projectors usually take 0.5kW (all together) in smart eco mode. In example 50" TV takes 375W on average so the difference is negligible and you get lot more viewing real-estate (50" vs 200"). PC to run DCS on good framerates takes 0.5 -1.0kW. If you compare the price/power vs image size/resolution the projectors are far cheaper than anything else. And I would say the money spent will be well worth it. Kuky - if you'll be coming to NZ let me know - I have here the demo projection systems, TVs and rift as well so people can try it, compare and make their own opinion based on hands on experience. That's the 270º/100º setup with 6K resolution (5760 x 2160) Edit: The vertical lines are FSX frames - DCS or P3D doesn't have it - (you can see here how the headtracking works with the big FoV - X,Y,Z)
  18. In theory yes but but in practice it will would be quite expensive, very awkward to wear and the technology is not quite there yet. Good question :D. Some of the projectors are as cheap as $15K, although I don't think you will get away with less power unless you'll be prepared to settle for very dim image (bigger the image dimmer it gets - square law )
  19. Hi, just updating to 1.2.8. As far as I know you should be updating files only in c:\users\[your pc name]\saved games\dcs. In snapviews try to change FoV in [13] (viewing angle) or allow saving snapviews and - zoom in or out and save it with (if I remember well) Alt + 0.
  20. and here is the "behind the scenes". there are some losses in resolution due to double cropping (optical and software) but you can cover entire domes with it
  21. From what I've heard and seen they are very likely using custom made convex first surface mirror to stretch the image. I'm not sure how much is the image stretched and how much warped but to cover that area and FoV I'm suspecting that with only single projector (even with 4K projector) the pixels will be size of Lego blocks - moreover the cheapest 4K projector costs $15 000,-
  22. Hi guys, just to claryfy the things and sorry for the confusion my post made - the $1000 shipping is for the theoretical dome which would be quite expensive. Shipping fot the screens i actually make is around $270. The screen - if you compare it to other available products on market - is 1/5th of the price. The projectors is variable in this equation - i think saying the setup will cost $5000 is really misleading because the final price really depends on what projectors you'll buy and how much you pay for it. Lots of people already have projectors so i can't imagine they would throw out their old projectors and went on to buy new ones if they can use the ones they've already got. There is also the fact that if you want to build your 180 degree setup you don't have to buy everything at once. You can start with one projector on the wall which will get you going, then you can add the screen and then you can add the 2nd projector so you spread the $3K over time. HuggyBear - if you'll do bit of shopping online you'll find the prices can be pretty close to what you can get on amazon and if not i can supply the BQs for $1080 with the screens.
  23. at the moment I'm using 3 viewports and I tweaked few files to optimize the textures for higher FPS - FC2 is fast as lightning - same Ka50 but since 1.2 the DCS world is quite slow even on single monitor and low res (1920 x 1080) few clouds and some explosions and I can have a coffee between frames. here are the projectors mounts (one is missing - not too hard to guess it is permanently mounted now ;-) :-D ) - the photos were shot with flash which nicely shows how the screen can turn white with the right kind of light
  24. They were just making fun of people :) they told them what to expect and what they will feel and how they will feel and then they put blacked out sky mask on. :-) and that was enough to create completely realistic illusion of flight for them - same con rift marketing uses ;) looking good - is it the monitors without bezels? :-). will get onto the email now
  25. question is how many people would buy it. At the moment 270º setup with overhead view (semi - dome) would cost about 6k + cost of 5 projectors and about $1000 shipping...
