Yes yes we all know Kopp is a champion of self abuse and derided at best by most people 'in the loop' here. But if what he writes makes the politicians think twice before they rip the arse out of our defence budget again, maybe its a good thing? Or just wishful thinking.

Thanks, always interesting (and sometimes required) to know the differences between our orbats.

What is a special troops Bn, I am assuming not SOF? Combat service support?

do all the tutorials in the hog, it will make it much easier, and is well worth the effort. most fuctionality you can use with the clickable cock pit and the MFCD's. if you have four bottons at the top of your joystick, you can use the modifiers to mimick the DMS, TMS CMS etc. just write it down so you have a reference sheet in front of you and it will be second nature before you know it. you even have a HOTAS tutorial in the module now. I do enjoy FC3, but i only brought it originally because I wanted to go zoom zoom to 40,000 ft. It is chalk and cheese to the A-10C.

^ they have both worked very well since DCSW was released, in fact I reckon they both work better than the hammer campaign. very nice, but isnt this the mission where you have to destroy the dug in infantry? i find the best way to employ Mk82AIR's is by CCRP 5mil level flight at about 300ft AGL, generally with at least a 4 ripple @ 30ft. leaves bugger all room for error, but almost always works for me. flying that low would also make the SA-3 point defence ineffective at the target loc. looking forward to reading about how the armed recon mission goes for you. you might need to dispense with the hard deck for that one ;)

Why do convoys just split and stop when attacked?
dumgrunt replied to Digll's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Is soldiering a dirty word in the Corps is it? I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest here, merely taking a light hearted and frank approach. And I think its been established we have a different way of doing things. -

Yeah with that line of thinking, why would you instruct a cook or a clerk how to bayonet fight? Not likely to need it right? but they do. And that's not even addressing the wider 'academic" question of why do we even teach bayonet fighting at all still? And while avoiding the bleeding obvious that War is inherently unpredictable and people will sometimes find themselves in a situation outside of their normal role. In Timor, we had pogs (as in truckwits, clerks, loggies etc) conducting fighting patrols because all the arm's corps elements were tied up elsewhere. And the early interfet days were pretty hairy, not withstanding the serious concern that the TNI would intervene. Obviously if you have an elevated threat of an air attack, you are meant to have a point defence detachment allocated to you. But as illustrated above, what you should get/be doing don't always marry up with the task that needs to be achieved. And in that event that you are on the receiving end of an incoming airstrike, like all times you are under direct (assupposed to indirect) fire, the worst thing you can do is not shoot back. because all you are doing by not shooting is making his life easier, your life more likely to end, and absolutely solidifying your loss of the initiative. Oh, and, in Vietnam, an F-111 was shot down by a single 7.62 round, or so it was reported, but i'm sure someone here was "there". I think it was refered as the million dollar BB. -

Ah right, a RISTA sqn i take it then. I'd summarise what you just wrote to one word. "soldiering" :smilewink: (although UAV's are not something in our equipment entitlement. so you've got me there) wooden sticks eh? i thought we got shitty gear  -
frankly I think the Aegean would be a better theatre, a more likely place of conflict (as in 0.1% as suppose to 0.000001% ;) ), and a natural expansion to the current theatre. just don't do what those BI devs did and get caught!

squadron pilot? as in air crew? Yeah, in the grunts using a bayonet was the SOP, however in Cav we get ceramic prodders to counter magnetic anti tampering detonators. cars are great fro stashing all manner of superfluous crap. rat pack spoon that was sharpened to a point is good idea but. -

I would have given him a mine probe and told him to get the bloody thing! -
Japan scrambles F-15s near the disputed islands
dumgrunt replied to Kenan's topic in Military and Aviation
far canal, I always thought it would be at least a decade before this erupted. At this rate the flash point may occur far sooner than I thought. I can dig up the article if some one really needs it, but I remember reading in the-diplomat dot com that a Chinese academic and former PLAN admiral was quoted as saying he believed that although China was a trajectory to be on parity with the US militarily, it would be likely that hostilities would occur far before this was reached. -

Like has already been stated, security elements don't stay in the immediate proximity of the convoy. It's called mutual support. In real life self preservation takes hold than it does in a sim. if you at on the ground you know if you don't shoot at the air craft making a run on your position, you are toast. If you are in the aircraft and you know there is a wall of trace coming a you, it will certainly take your mind off breakfast. Frankly I'd be more worried about indirect fire than an air strike. -

True it hard to judge lead marks by mk 1 eye ball alone, that is why there are standard lead distances at differing angles taught for low level air defence. Im not across the engagement envelopes of unguided AG weapons, but I can tell you IRL convoys always run with security, even at troop level you are talking at least 4 25mm, 2 .50 cal plus numerous other gpmg and LSWs. Come within 2000m you will be thinking twice, come within 1000m and you will be lucky make the run without gettin hit. And in most modern aircraft it only takes one. Whether you drive through or herring bone depends alot on terrain, and most importantly whether a vehicle has been disabled. -

It's actually called a herring bone, and it's one of two main possible actions on if you are contacted whilest in a convoy. -
Over the hump fulcrum campaign, any attempt to go into mission planner, load screen freezes, with just the way point info box visible. Only way to get out is through task manager. Thanks

Yeah I've had the same thing occur a couple of times. But again couldn't reproduce it.

Waypoint, Markpoint, Bullseye, Hook, etc...why?
dumgrunt replied to Pochi's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I am assuming you are talking about campaigns etc what I personally do (in the mission planner since it is much easier than pissing about with the CDU) is look at the advised flight path, then set up target reference points where known or likely enemy locations are ie IP TGT TRP1 TRP2 Egress etc so you can easly slew the SPI to that location. another way to look at it, especially when doing a CAS mission profile is waypoints are for nav, markpoints are for targets. IE if you are searching for targets, you might make it a mark point, then keep searching, especially if there are known air defences in the area. that way you can easily slew the TGP back to the prior targets you found. the other way to find enemy locations is of course by probing, but you are not only wasting the sensors you have but also the more concentrated the fire, the closer the mowing the lawn you will have to be. this not only nearly destroys all situational awareness, but also makings punching out an unlikely proposition if you wear good hit. -
OK, Just for the record, learning to fly...
dumgrunt replied to MatzWarhog's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
best advice I have read here RE landing was to keep the TVV on the base of the base of the runway. you do that and configure the aircraft properly and you cant go wrong. PS i thought that chick was hot.... -
China conducts flight landing on aircraft carrier
dumgrunt replied to lobo's topic in Military and Aviation
j-15, chinese copy of the naval flanker. how good are the crash dummy signs all over it? from memory they acquired that carrier from Ukraine in the early nineties, to use as a "casino" that its 20 years later that they have actually landed an aircraft on it speaks volumes.
