  1. Honestly, it's pretty useless to find targets. It's not even what it's there for. It's an intercept radar that assumes you already know where to point it, having been given a BRA from AWACS or GCI.

On top of that it doesn't have IFF, so even if you find something on your radar screen you won't know whether it's a friendly or an enemy.

You're far better off sticking your head outside of the cockpit and looking for the enemies visually. If it makes you feel any better, the Mig-21's radar is almost as useless.

It's pretty good for calculating your gunsight though.

  2. The Pimax 5k+ it's very hardware intensive. This is 100% to be expected because of the high resolution and large FOV.

You do need to have a 2080 Ti to have acceptable performance. Right now it's more than playable for me, but it is necessary to turn down some graphics settings.

With the 50% performance increase which is coming soon to DCS, I'm sure it will be very good.

The Pimax is the opposite of no good for DCS. It's very good because it provides much better image clarity in order to see gauges and labels and better FOV.

That being said, it's expensive, requires expensive hardware and base stations are not yet available, meaning you'll need to get your hands on Vive base stations for now.

  3. I'm no longer sure about the exact wording, bit I remember recently that Wags said on a podcast that it's up to third parties if they want to make eastern (Russian) aircraft.

In the J-11A we'd technically be talking about a license built Chinese aircraft and it also would be developed by a Chinese studio. So, in theory, it would be doubly removed from any restrictions that ED has.

I'd much rather see a fully modeled J-11A than the JF-17.

  4. I just remembered that I sent my Oculus Rift back twice, once for connectivity issues and once for pixel faults, before getting a working unit.

Apparently cable issues were a big thing with earlier Rifts.

Such things don't seem unusual in VR and Pimax is now going through the same process.

  5. I was gonna order but 1 guy in our group has been through hell. 1st headset was DOA it took a month to get a replacement sent. 2nd headset arrived with a dodgy lead connection in the headset he was up till 1 am to go through their fault finding (almost 3 hours) they are replacing the headset again and this appears to be a common problem. We have one guy with a working headset who loves it and the 2nd guy is fed up with it. It's a small sample size of 2 but for $600 I am not gonna risk it with customer service like this.

Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk

That actually sounds like really good customer service and that it's the hardware and quality control which is at fault.

I was lucky with my headset and it's completely flawless so far. So feel free to increase your sample size to three :)

  6. Yes, the communication menus should be visible. If not, it's probably because you've had VAICOM disable them.

Decide if you want to use VAICOM or not. To start off with, it's probably best to use the standard menus to familiarize yourself with the structure and the selections.

You don't need the F keys to interact with the communication menu. It's clickable with the mouse.

Most DCS VR pilots use a HOTAS and mouse and don't bother with the touch controllers. It's actually really easy to click the switches with the mouse in VR. I have a mouse on the right and a track ball on the left next to my throttle.

Lastly, don't lose patience. DCS's learning curve can be very steep, but it's also very rewarding. Flying in VR is the ultimate in flightsimming experience.

  7. Thanks for this! It's a really important step for useability of the F-14 in VR.

Very, very small critique on my part: I like the fact that the fonts are slightly larger, but being a purist I don't particularly like that some wordings have been abbreviated and and the typeface is a little blocky compared to the more rounded original Tomcat font.

Great mod though and I can't wait for it to work as a custom livery.

Many other modules could benefit from a similar treatment.

  8. guys, to start having fun into a basically dogfight based server you have to organize yourself with someone, you cant expect to have fun alone without communicating with others, like most pilot i've seen, and then start insulting if, for exemple, you get killed by a friendly calling raygun since 5 min in a hot zone, start using SRS everytime you're flying and you gonna have fun even if you're alone with a single mate on your side, the concept of this server is great, and most pilot aren't enjoying 100% of it's potential

This is why we need native radio functionality in DCS. SRS works well, but inevitably not everyone will have it.

  9. The article says "next update" and then references the post that Matt made on this forum, that says nothing about a promised release date. I get an error now when I click on the link to the blog. Hopefully that's because the article has been removed. Its got to be frustrating for the ED guys when these bloggers commit them to things that they never promised. They've got the major source of the VR issues pinned down, and it sounds like they might have a fix for it, and that's a good thing. When it comes out is up in the air, but at least we know they're closer to a solution.

The site is still up. But I'm totally with you - The writer has no more information than us (at least it seems that way).

I'd be very happy for it to be the next update though.

Any chance that DCS will be usable With a Pimax5K / HP Reverb, and a regular 2080 when the new update goes live?

    If it's really a 50% increase, I'd say yes.

  10. Many games these days tend to have advanced graphics options where you have many more possibilities to tweak settings via sliders.

It's possible to tweak some of the DCS lua files to get good improvements in visuals or performance.

It would be great to have more official options accessible via the GUI, in order to not break the integrity check.

    Some suggestions:

Shadow quality slider (cockpit shadows are heavily aliased even at high settings right now)

    Shader quality slider

    Different (more) types of AA
