The Interesting Missions Generator
emolina replied to emolina's topic in User Created Missions General
Hi everyone, the higher winds were being a bit of an issue with following the flight plan unless we did wind correction too but I thought that was a bit too much. So I've added a ground track readout in the 'Flight Plan' radio menu. I've also loosened the timing restrictions so that you'll get a perfect score if you are within 10 seconds of the take-off time and 40 seconds of the landing time. -
Thanks Tigar! that's a lot of great feedback, I'll try do deal with most of it point by point: 1. I agree, over the next week or two I'll be uploading new missions which extend the take-off sweet spot to be ten seconds either way of the planned time. Landing will change to 40 seconds either way of the predicted time and you will only lose one quarter of a point for each second outside of that. 2. I hadn't thought of making it more like a real-nav competition. That's good idea. I had originally thought about timing at waypoints but the code inside the mission was going to get really tricky. I couldn't just use a trigger because you would not be at the waypoint when it's triggered, you'd be at location where the trigger zone starts. 3. I had also thought of the METAR standard for the weather report but some of the information in the METAR is not available in DCS, like visibility for example. You can set it to BE something, but it's not measurable in the sim. It won't take into account things like fog, or low cloud, time of day, precipitation etc. On top of that I think a lot of people are not familiar with the METAR codes so it would be a hindrance to them more than help. The code I'm using was originally only intended to be used a short weather description for the filenames in the 'annotated' version of the missions but I ended up liking it so I put it in the kneeboards too! 4+5. I got the MiG-21 data from the mission posted here : https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2896883&postcount=56 in the main 'Interesting Missions' thread. If you would like to play around with that version until you're happy with it and then upload it here I would be really happy to re-run the MiG-21 missions with your updated data. I think you make some great points in 4+5 but a lot of that detail is outside of my 'scope', not that I have a scope at the moment but I think that if I got bogged down with things like vertical navigation I may never actually finish the project and never go on to the next thing. Thank you for all the great feedback, it's great to hear back from people actually using the missions!

Thank you! I didn't think people would be too interested in the missions for the Flaming Cliffs aircraft.

The link at the top of the page works well for me, did you click on it or copy/paste it?
-
Oh right! Phew! The missions are made by an external program, that's the only way I can maintain them really. So I'm hoping that if DCS updates break the current version of the missions, I'll be able to modify the generator to fix the issue, then re-generate them!
-
Thank you! Only when I re-generate them, have you been running into issues?

Thanks Yurgon! I run into a bit of an issue last night, the higher winds are having too much of an effect on dead reckoning. It's not easy to compensate for wind drift so I'm going to try and incorporate a course indicator in the little info block that you can ask for in-mission. -
Hope you enjoy the missions!

Done! I've also made some changes to the weather, you can read about all the changes here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2912677&postcount=96

The Interesting Missions Generator
emolina replied to emolina's topic in User Created Missions General
Ok everyone, I've started to do another update to these, I will roll them out over the next week or two as I get them generated. It takes a couple of hours to do them for each plane so I can't do them all at once. I was unsatisfied with the weather in the earlier batch. I originally intended the weather to be much more of a 'character' in these missions, but I've found myself not really considering it much during the preparation for a flight. The only real concern I ever had with it earlier was that if I took off from a low-lying airfield, my destination airfield would often be under cloud cover so I could just not go. I tend to fly the Sabre around and without SOME visibility on approach I can't land. I don't think a flight abort due to weather is much fun at all, I want to have to consider the weather, but if the only thing it adds is a cloud base check at the start of a mission then I've failed in making the weather interesting. My aim in this update is to increase the amount of instrument flights, provide more challenging take-off and landings and increase the amount of icing you may experience. The main difference is that from difficulty level 5 you will start to get many more days with complete, or almost complete cloud cover. The cloud layer can also be a lot thicker but the cloud base is normally higher. I hope this will equate to us spending more time on instruments, and even if the cloud layer is not thicker, the higher amount of coverage will force us to do more radio or DR navigation. Temperatures are now more likely to be lower from difficultly 7 and onwards, which combined with thicker cloud cover should get us thinking more about icing. Mission start times have changed too. I noticed that in the middle of the day there really isn't much of a difference in the mission if it starts a a few hours earlier or later. So I've reduced the amount of missions in that time and added more at the start and end of the day where the lighting conditions are changing. The amount of full-night missions should remain about the same. There is an increase in the wind speed from difficulty level five onwards, I've not tested it much yet, I think it may still need some more. I've also doubled the turbulence you may get from about difficulty level 3. In other changes, I've added Maykop-Khanskaya to the airports list and allowed flights to be around 50 kilometres longer. Those two changes have greatly increased the flight plans you may get. Take-off time for all aircraft is now at least 15 minutes. The increased wind was having a big effect on ground tracks so I've made it so that the data you get from the 'Flight Plan' radio menu also tells you your ground track. I've also loosened the timing restrictions so that you'll get a perfect score if you are within 10 seconds of the take-off time and 40 seconds of the landing time. The aircraft that have the updated missions so far are: - Sabre - Both variants of the L-39 - Both variants of the P-51 - Hawk - BF-109 - FW-190 - MiG-15 - F-5E Thank you all for your support in getting all the aircraft into the generator! I hope you enjoy the new missions. . -
It's no big deal, I change one number, press a couple of keys and wait for a while! The original 10 minutes was just a guess.
-
Hmm, ok, I think if you are going to make your own notes then yes, 10 minutes may not be enough. I have been trying to make it so that the kneeboard has everything you need but I can't really rely on that! everyone has different ways of doing things. If I bump up the time from mission start to take-off to 15 minutes, would that be enough for you do you think? I definitely would like you to care about time! for me that's a big part of the experience.
-
That's no good! I can make the time to take off on the L-39 longer, that's no problem. Can I ask, how much time does the looking at the flight on the kneeboard take and how much of the 20 minutes is just getting the L-39 up and running?
-
You haven't given us a lot of information Tox! I imagine a lot of people would be interested in a new campaign.

Let me know! have a good weekend.

Ok, I've (hopefully) fixed the F-5 load out error. The fixed missions are ready for download. -
Hi Hicks, I've just had a quick look and the take-off time is 15 minutes after the mission start. What are you seeing in the kneeboard?

Ha! Yes, ahem, the dangers of making missions for modules you don't own! I will have a look at it over the next couple of days. Thank you very much for letting me know. -
I'm so glad you're using the missions from multiple aircraft! that's awesome, thanks for letting me know.

Hi everyone, today I've uploaded the missions for the F-5E! Which means all the fixed wing aircraft are done, thank you all very much for your help. I also updated the Mirage 2000 missions, there was an issue where some of the more complicated failure modes weren't working. Fixed now. -

Hi everyone, although I don't own the F-5E I wanted to make my generator work with it. I had some help in the 'Interesting Missions' main thread from lots of members that provided me with mission templates for each aircraft. I was able to use those templates to generate the missions BUT as I don't own the F-5E module I wasn't able to get any screenshots. I would love it if someone could post some screenshots of the maps, frequencies and flight plan in the F-5E so I could update the first post.

Hi everyone, long story short I made a thing that made 500 missions for the F-5E. The long story is here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=172869 This could be an interesting flight! The 'Interesting Flights' system is a generator of sort-of-random missions aimed at making sure you never have to fly the same mission twice. They are interesting because you don't know what's going to happen in them. Every mission is different. The flight plan for each mission is generated just for that mission. There is no combat but there IS scoring. The flight plan is complete, well annotated, and can be found on your kneeboard. Below you will find the download link, there are 100 missions in the 'annotated' directory. Their filename gives you some clues about what will happen during the mission (format explained in the post linked above). There are 400 missions in the 'interesting' directory, they don't tell you anything except their difficulty. The message linked above explains the system, its goals, and what you will find in each mission. It's fairly long! I hope you enjoy it. Mission Briefing Look at the weather forecast on your kneeboard, then checkout the flight plan details. The aim of these missions is to get the aircraft safely back on the ground, sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard, sometimes you shouldn't even fly. You'll get a higher score if you meet the take off and landing times shown in your flight plan. Down to the second. Make sure there isn't anything wrong with your aircraft during startup. You are not supposed to complete all the 'Interesting Flights', for many, you shouldn't even take off! A lot of the higher numbered flights are just not safe. Make sure the weather and your aircraft are suitable. If not, download another flight. Or download a bunch of them in the first place so you can go trough them quickly. There are plenty there, no reason to ever fly one twice. So don't, they are a lot more fun if you don't know what's going to happen. During the flight you can use the 'F10' radio menu to find out: Your score for the mission so far. What you are expected to do next. Get a helping hand by seeing your ground speed and the elapsed mission time down to the second. You will not experience or see any combat during this flight. 'Interesting Flights' uses the MOOSE scripting framework and Open Maps. WHERE TO GET THE MISSIONS FROM Please read the thread linked above if you don't know what this is all about! You can download the missions from a shared DropBox folder here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mzic1uoxnyofgm3/AADJTks7pN0nmj1CqpmqUy5oa?dl=0
