PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
MilesD replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hey Draken and Don, Battery Life depends on a few factors. It should have no problem with a 8 hour session unless you are constantly pressing buttons. Here are the numbers that effect it. LiPo Battery capacity = 120mAh or 100mAh useful FCU draw when on, but when the IRLED is off = 5 mA or 20 hours continuous FCU draw with IRLED on = 30 mA or approx. 3 hours continuous 2.4 GHZ transceiver draws 11ma, but only for a few milliseconds when transmitting button change states. Most users set the LED to turn off 15 seconds after the last button press, and the FCU shuts down completely after 30 minutes of no button presses. Button three turns it back on ,so there is no issue trying to turn it back on while flying. So if our PointCTRL LED is on 15% of our flight, we would use 9.5mAh of the 100 mAh per hour, so call it 10 hours. You can use the magnetic chargers while you are flying, but if you top off the batteries ever time nature calls, you should be good for a long time, especially us old guys. Hope that helps, but I would like to see others jump in and share their experience. Thanks for the questions, Miles- 3421 replies

Thanks DEG, I am glad we able able assist our community in making DCS recreation time a bit more more enjoyable. The feedback makes it all worth it! @ everyone: Here is a rough video showing what you can do when you first get your PointCTRL to become familiar with it. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey TimberWolf, All 1 thru 520 orders are shipped and have tracking visibility. In addition to the firmware update delay, we shipped more than double this weeks numbers because folks from previous groups or early adopters also paid invoices this week. All good, I was just not expecting that many. The good news is, November order dates will be the first groups called after FireCats list is completed. I am going to risk a projection, and say we should be done with FireCats list in the beginning of September. Thanks for your patience. Miles- 3421 replies

Hey FiringPin, You should have received a tracking number by now to the email you paid the invoice from. Not all of the last groups orders have shipped yet, but all of the labels have been created. I delayed sending this groups out a bit because I wanted to add the new HMS firmware, which is much easier to set-up. Something small seems to always pop up, and I try and include it before shipping the next groups. Based on user feedback I also changed the key Aux Button key mapping. I added [LCTRL]+[RCTRL] to the q,w,e,r,t, and y mapping to avoid conflicts with default DCS key-binds per some of the guys request. Here is how the process goes with orders, invoices and shipping for anyone interested. 1) When I have a batch of PointCTRLs completed and initially tested, I send out the invoices for a group. 2) I wait a few a few days for all of the invoices to get paid for that group. (Printing them all at once helps me keep track of things and saves a lot of time) 3) When all of the invoices are paid, I print out the shipping labels, and packing slips. 4) From the packing slips, I then assemble the HMS with the specific mount, buttons, chargers ect, and test each kit as a complete unit before putting it in a bin with the packing slip for Carol to package up and marry with the shipping label. 5) When all or most of the group is boxed up we take them to the local Post Office. I try and keep it under a week from when the invoices go out, to when the last one is shipped, but something usually comes up and delays that a bit. This time was the firmware improvements, but I think the new users will be happy with how much easier to is to set up. I spent a few hours today making a video with everything from unpackaging, testing, mounting, calibration and then use. Hope that helps, Miles- 3421 replies

We should be done with FireCats list in a few weeks. We will then start shipping from the website pre orders that start 20 November. Firmware updates are always free, v2 is new hardware, mostly just smaller, and a bit more refined FCUs. Thanks for the questions and your patience, Miles- 3421 replies

Glad it worked out. I think you were one the very early adopters, It was strange, I responded a few days ago, but when I looked this morning it was not there. Fortunately for me when I went to respond again, my original response was sitting there ready to go. Hope you and family are doing well Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Sirrah, It been a while, Do you have the latest firmware? What headset do you have? Its completely fine to move the upper cursor target down so you can easily put the cursor on your perceived finger location. Don't bother with edge calibration. Its really not necessary, and it's easier and more practical to just to run through the 5 point again. A few things to check Check for IR interference on the right side, and that the FCU you are not using is down by your side or completely blocked. Point Control will use which ever IR source is closets to the center of the screen, even during 5 point calibration. Be sure that the horizontal cursor targets are centered in your FOV with both eyes open. Be sure to pick something in the center of the cockpit panel, and you can rest you hand on something if it helps. While calibrating be sure the FCU is pointing directly forward, If you have the FCU angled it will cause the tracking issue you describe. During normal, use you can position your hand however is the most comfortable, and you don't have to worry about holding the FCU straight. Catch me on Discord, and we can do voice and screen share and run through a calibration if you want. Good luck and let us know how you make out, Miles- 3421 replies

We just hit 500 on FireCats list. 50 more and we start shipping of the website pre-order form that started at the end of November. I wish I could could you a good estimate, but something always seems to come up when I do. The good news is my help is back from a month overseas, so shipping numbers should start increasing again. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Mower, I am getting ready to send the invoices for the 500 group, and I did not see a pre-order form from you. If you want to order now, just go to https://pointctrl.com/preorder-form/ and fill it out. If you want to wait, you can fil it out anytime in the future and you will keep your place in line. Just be sure to include your number from FireCats original list when you do. Thanks for your patience, I know it's been a long wait. Miles- 3421 replies

Hey all, I will be sending out up to #490 invoices today. I wanted to share this this user video from Aries. I really liked it because he very simply shows the deliberate hand interaction with cockpit controls, slowly and clearly. I know he just received his PointCTRL, so I was a bit surprised how quickly he appeared to become accustomed to it. A new device with a new DCS module is quite a test. I queued up to some control interactions, but I watched the whole video in detail to look for things that could be addressed for a new user. These types of videos are really helpful to me for development, and others to get a real world idea of how PointCTRL functions. Thanks again Aries, great stuff! Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Shark, While the ejected player can walk onto the Huey and be taken back to base, other players don't see him moving. To everyone else, the ejected player stays stationary next to his chute even though he is walking around. We were hopeful when we saw the icon show up on the map, but no change and he is still the invisible man as he moves around the battlefield. Plus he just won't take a seat in the Heli, and rides back with his head through the top. Miles

Hey Guys, I have had my head down working a firmware bug. I don't get frustrated easily, but this thing drove me crazy. It does not appear to follow any logic. Even after an apparent fix, I kept working it because I could not find the exact cause. I spent the last week troubleshooting the hardware to be sure there was not some hardware issue. Anyway I have not had any more reports of a hard reset (unpluging the FCU battery) being required, so I will start invoicing again Monday. Apologies for the delay. Miles- 3421 replies

Hey Hoot, The first 20 or so orders on the web site did not auto-send a confirmation. If you like, DM your order name, or the email you provided, and I can send a confirmation. Production is just now picking up and can be followed in the PointCTRL Discord also. Thanks, Miles- 3421 replies
