I agree that in some situations the inner reflections of the cockpit can be extremely strong, to the point where you can't actually see outside.

This is how it is in real life when conditions are met.

Take a look at this footage...look how EXTREME reflections are when the sun is in the correct spot:

As you said in the last phrase, your water doen't look so dark. Here it's crazy dark! lol Are you using VR? Refreshing the shader folders was one of the first things I did after installing the 2.7. Anyways, also in reality the water is not that dark and also, very important, this is not reality, we are using screens, we don't have the real world resolution, everything is more difficult, specially with VR. The quality in VR is not that great, the fov is not a bit close to real life. Everything in VR is already difficult, we need to easy in some points to be able to fly. Like all that crazy reflection with the SU-25T and A-10A, absolutely not realistic and doesn't help. In real life it would be much easier to see things. An extra option in the settings menu with the option to activate/desactivate/increase/decrease reflection would be nice. I know ED has a lot to do and the guys are doing a great job. But the dark water and the reflection are giving a real hard time to some VR users. 😕

Ala12Rv-watermanpc  I will definetely try different times and weather conditions! Thanks a lot for the heads up. I'll post here if it worked better. Cheers! 😃
But, that is still a temporary workaround, not a solution. 😄

Yeah!, definitely woth a try. Maybe something about 09h or 17h, about 16knots winds plus some slight clouds...it seems to make a difference, specially when not looking the water too vertically and/or too low.👍

Have you've been reading what @VampireNZ wrote, from his actual experience 🤔

So yes, there should be rain droplets (and eventually rain streams) when flying through clouds.

yes, but unless DCS actually model these particular conditions, maybe is not a good idea to have these droplets everytime we pass though a cloud...otherwise I'm absolutely in with this of course. Also, My initial video was about droplets UNDER rain, not inside a cloud.

    Hi all,

I used to have the same problem and solved it the following way:

I did not have full screen enabled in settings but I did have “full screen optimisations disable” in the compatibility options for DCS. Removing it solved the crash issue completely.

I have exactly that same configuration for years, still having it for 2.7...crashing all the time. Tried all the ideas from this thread but I still having random crashes ONLY when loading a second, third, etc. mission.

  5. I would love to see this effect in DCS:

(not a fighter aircraft but it ilustrates the point)

I would also completely remove the odd mini clouds arround the aircraft that happen when flying under rain at the moment, they look terrible and are not realistic. There should be only fog, rain strips over the cockpit's canopies and the very thin and small droplets lines when flying under rain, all dependant on the severity of the rain.

actually i'm not sure. i've never seen that effect captured on video. the video in the post above does not count, as this seems to be just normal rain. also a glider is very slow obviously...

if you drive your car through thick fog, you don't expect droplets to form neither. would be nice if someone with real flying experience could chime in on this.

Sorry, my bad, I posted the video in the wrong thread, of course there shouldn't be rain streams over the cockpit when flying through the clouds.

Currently the water looks like a matt mirror at altitude giving one no perception of height or speed, only from like 10ft over the water one can make out waves. Clouds should also not be reflecting in salt water. Definitely a huge downgrade from 2.5.

    lol, what??🤣

that will exclusively depend on water bumpiness and reflected light from objects.

    +1 here.

I prefer the water from 2.5 too.

    (VR user).

    🤦‍♀️

New water definitely needs more work but c'mon!!!!

  8. I partially agree...I mean, the old water was TERRIBLE in waves size and distance detail, as well as the reflections were waaaayyy too sharp and clear. However,I agree it looks now too dark when flying low (it looks good at certain height), almost black. Something I have noticed is that the too dark water is only taking place when setting a clear sky at noon. Other than that it doesn't look so dark and it actually looks quite similar to the old one in terms of color and brightness.

    example:

  9. The "problem" now with the water is that a huge physical effect is still missing: Sun light dispersion due to waves. This makes for a too dark and flat water's surface in most situations, I mean, water will be difficult to distinguish from the sky in a fighter aircraft in combat most of the time (as per real fighter pilots), specially when looking the side where the light is impacting. However, when looking to the backlight side, and unless sun is very high in the sky (pretty much on top of the vertical), there will be a HUGE "milky" sun light reflection area up to the horizon that will contribute to discern water from sky and height, the higher the more spread the sun shine will be and more affected by the atmosphere scattering tinting it with a nice golden color.

Here is a little example video showing how difficult it is to distinguish water from sky when in a dogfight and at the same time the missing FULL sun light effect over the water in DCS:

Note how that satinated sun shine is 90% missing at the moment in DCS.

Some shots showing this effect too:

nothing.....because that’s how it looks to your eye when you are in sunshine and flying OVER the cloud shadows. The issue is the contrast when you fly UNDER the clouds in the shadows.

It doesn’t look like that in real life. When I fly on a partly cloudy day and I go into a cloud shadow it doesn’t look like I’m about to be hit with a thunderstorm as I do it!

Maybe you should look twice the pictures because all of them, except the last one, are flying UNDER the clouds. Not sure what you mean with flying in "sunshine"?, are you expecting shadows without a sun/moon casting light?

I would love to see some screens showing what is so wrong btw. I provided some supporting my point but havent seen any supporting the "too dark" argument which is quite curious...

  11. White caps, should be much whiter, have more randomness in their visual aspect and be sharper/detailed ...the animation speed should also be slowed down a lot (stay alive a longer time). The problem now is also that they ALL appear and disappear at the same time, instead of be dependant of each particular white cap.

    Example of extreme white caps:

It's on the "to-do" list of things to improve, just ran out of time for this before release. 🙂

Honestly, I'm worried about changing this, specially for monitor users. The darkness below the thick clouds layers looks stunning and realistic, I would NOT touch that, at all. 🙄

Exactly, what is the problem with this?:

  13. First of all, I'm delighted with the new clouds, I think ED made a great job and to me, they are probably the best clouds out there in many aspects. Since they started showing content about them, I was particulary impressed with a few screens that looked excellent and personally, I love that particular time of day and how the clouds look so dark in contrast with the sky, I'm talking about this:

    Hero1.png.72735a627d25c8c5297a9dff3fbaccd6.png

    EN_Hero2.png.a74c0a8d242b45ca518b7ed28ed85310.png

    hero8.png.6ccc413eb750839f71d3409624f9126b.png

Note how the clouds have great density, the internal scatter of the light through them looks amazing given the impression of having thickness and volume and the sun light is filtering very accurately through the different layers impacting over the bottom of some of them...AMAZING!.

However, I have been trying to recreate these images and have failed. Tried multiple presets and times of day from 20h to 22h with no success. This is what I'm getting at maxed out settings (gamma 1,7):

    Screen_210417_133811.jpg

    Screen_210417_134553.jpg

    Screen_210417_134625.jpg

    Screen_210417_134929.jpg

And this is with gamma 1 (lower setting):

    Screen_210417_133908.jpg

As you can see, the difference is huge!

I would like to know if it is me, or this is how it is supposed to look right now. Maybe these ED screens are form a WIP future version but I would like to know, if possible. Other than that, I'm loving the clouds at day, dusk/dawn and night, however, the transition between sun and moon, when the sun has disappeared (or is very low over the horizon) but there is still light doesn't look very good at all, with extremely flat and weird colored clouds and evironement.

    Screen_210417_003644.jpg

    Screen_210417_133907.jpg

    Anyone?

EDIT: I missed this sentence in the ED's patch notes:

    • “The lighting effects on the clouds, especially when the sun is low on the horizon is still very much a WIP, and will be improved.”

So basically they are working to improve this, my bad!, guess, I was too excited with 2.7 to carefully read the notes so hoping to see this improvements asap!🙂

  14. I agree about the clouds reflections, they are too aggressive, specially in heavy seas with high waves, the more waviness, the less noticeable the reflections should be. About the sun reflection, well, it might be a bit too intense, but I think the reason for this is that the way the sun is reflecting in the water is not realistic which makes the reflection to concentrate too much into one spot. The sun reflection should spread MUCH more  along the horizontal and specially the vertical axis. The "white" look is correct, actually it should look even whiter. Some real life images to ilustrate what I mean:
