  1. I only have .9 hrs of flight time in an F-15D, so my experiences are limited. You can hear the environmental systems a bit, kind of like driving down the highway with you window down, but with earplugs in and a helmet, its mostly muted. I did not hear the other F-15 when in formation, but we were never in burner while in formation. As many have said, comm's is the most prevalent sound I heard. You do hear the engines when in burner, but it isn't overly loud inside the cockpit because I had foam earplugs in under my helmet. Most F-15 pilots had custom molded earphones, since they fly regularly. We had hot mic on the whole flight, so you can hear a lot of breathing when pulling G's. If you removed your mask, than you were supposed to switch to cold mic, the pilot didn't want to hear you puking and the ECS system is loud when hot mic'd anyway.
  2. The arresting hook is also how we attach the holdback tool to keep restrain the jet when doing burner runs. F-16's and F-22's have hooks too so it's not just a naval thing
  3. Haha, I'm and engine guy that started on F-15's at Nellis. Currently on B-52's and typing this reply from Nellis at the moment. Well being stationed at Nellis, I've got to experience a bunch of cool stuff. I've got to touch RAAF F-111's, India's SU-30MKI, French Mirages, Canadian Snowbirds. Been in F-16/18, C-5/130, UH-1, RC-135. Flown in F-15 and KC-10. Heck, they even trust me to start all 8 engs on the B-52. Also got to watch the CAPSTONE firepower demo held at Creech that had bombing runs by B-1/2/52, A-10 CAS, F-15/16 air coverage and HH-60 SAR demo. A cool memory that stand out was during Red Flag when the Brits came with their Tornados. We needed to do a burner run on our 15 at the trim pad. Coincidentally, the Brits had to do a burner run on a Tornado as well. So here we were, side by side on the trim pad at night with both jets in burner. When we shut down the Brits yelled out, "you win ya ****s!"
  4. I just got my rift last week. I was hesitant on getting one because I had never had a chance to use one before. I was using TrackIR, but I never really liked it for dogfighting because the head movement and on screen display didn't feel natural so it was not ideal for me. However, I was in Best Buy and they had the Oculus Rift on sale. For $599, it came w/ Lucky Tales, EVE: Valkyrie and a $100 gift card so I decided why not and grabbed it. First use was awesome. I didn't use it to long the first 2 days, just to get used to it. After that I could do an hour session fine. The resolution is lower, but it isn't that bad. With pixel density on 2.5, I can read the F-15 gauges easily by just leaning in a little bit. I haven't had the need to map zoom feature. The immersion and the matural 1:1 head tracking makes tracking things so much easier for me, especially while performing BFM/ACM. I've only used it for a week before I had to leave for a work tripI play DCS on a laptop but I didn't pack my Rift with me. So I'm stuck with using TrackIR again. I'm really missing my Rift right now. Only another month till I can use it again :(
  5. With v-sync on and all settings at max. The only time I get stuttering is during multiplayer when using TWS if I've been in the server for a long time. But that's due to a bug moreso than hardware.
