Pitch controls for P-51 - limit saturation?
Agathos_Deimon replied to Emacs's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Emacs, great to see you improve. And nice that you get the same good feedback of a 10% curve with 100% saturation. It has a reason why i settled on that in DCS. ;) Rudder aix is a different animal, as it depends even more on the rudder you got. I have an old SIMPED F16 which already has a build in curve to simulate a good rudder control similar to a real plane. So i need very few changes in most sims. DCS is about 5% or so atm. But you can experiment with anything from 0 - about 35. I would not go beyond 35 cause than your upper curve gets very unpresice and rather "sporty". But if it stays to sensitive just try more. It all boils down on the rudder when you get a good feedback for those coordinated maneuvers. About the wrong calibration. Look in the window game controler settings the curve is properly recognized. If not, just use the wind calibration there. -
I would say P-51D, FW190A & D are very similar and the FW190 is probably the easiest WW2 plane overall to fly, cause workload is reduced alot due to the single lever engine control. If you want to get a little more excitement i would recommend the 109 or the Spit fire next and than move on to the I-16 which due to its huge radial and early design will be the most unpleasant to fly.

To OP. A little more explanation might help you. The F/A-18 uses a Fly by wire or FCS (Flight control systems) that switches its behavior when you configure the plane from TO/LD config to normal flight and back. In the TO/Landing config with gear and flaps down the plane tries to maintain a certain AoA and wants to fly “onspeed” for that. What usually happens when you come back from a mission, enter the pattern and throw out gear and flaps is that you get a pitch up moment during deaccelaration as the FCS switches to onspeed AoA mode and tries to control the plane to that AoA, but your speed is still above the proper AoA speed and so plane pitches up. How to avoid that. Keep the flight director on the horizon line with stick inputs till the speed bleeds away. But be aware that with deacceleration the pitch up quickly turns to a pitch down and so you might get behind the power curve. Additionally the FCS doesnt automatically trim the plane for the desired AoA in the E-Bracket. This means while deaccelation takes place, you need to add power - more than you first think - to avoid the plane pitching down. Once you are roughly established in a balance, trim pitch up and reduce/add throttle as necessary to keep the flight director in the E-bracket. Practise this first in straight and level flight until you are good at maintaining alt and onspeed AoA. Keep in mind that due to the AoA onspeed your main control for climb/sink is throttle NOT pitch. Once you are good at straight and level add some turns. You will need to add power to maintain altitude, as once you bank you need more LIFT aka more speed at the desired AoA. As there is a slight delay, its best to add the power just before banking and reducing it just before roll out to avoid ballooning. If you are comfortable in doing this in level flight, now practice to establish a balanced and controlled decent at say 3° downward slope. In all that practice, do not look at the airspeed. This plane is flown with a certain AoA NOT a certain speed. You should focus on having the plane trimmed in the E bracked and control decent/climb by adding/decreasing power by just using the flight director and E-Bracket and its movement alone. Here a few things you might find helpful from my experience: - surprisingly i find it easier to establish correct AoA onspeed trim and speed in the level breakturn to final. I enter the break at 350-400 kts, go IDLE, pop the speed brake, pull enough Gs so plane deaccelerates rapidly. Once below 250 I go gear down and full flaps, which usually happens around the 90° point. I keep pulling hard, and while pulling I already trim for onspeed AoA. When I roll out I get the speed brake back in and add power and usually can avoid a big balloon or sink. - as I am an old VFR jockey that IRL usually trims the plane just a tad nose heavy to have some back pressure when doing airwork and pattern stuff, I tried this for the F/A-18 also. When I do such an approach I will trim the plane so that on its own the flight director would just be inside the lower part of the E-Bracket and I have to maintain a slight pull on the stick to have it in the center of it. That way I can establish a sense when and how much power I need to add or reduce. But keep in mind, this is not a proper procedure for the F/A-18 actually. It’s a made up thing to create a feedback for me I am used to from my other flying stuff. And just practise. Especially if this is your first sim, you need to train, train, train and yes train. Its a complex thing and when you start your training keep it simple to avoid overload and time pressure. As said. Start with just trying to maintain straight and level flight. Move on to turns at constant alt than decents. And do not try to press yourself into correct patterns early on. Thats an element you add once you are able to control your plane. If at first you need 2500ft AGL downwind and a 8 mile final, who cares. You can shrink that later on once all the coordination settles in. About this: When you fly a VFR aprroach keep your eyes outside the cockpit 90+% of the time. If you are in the breakturn, ajust you turn by looking at your reference - which is the runway - to not overshoot/undershoot. Maintaining a nice constant bank angle from turning into base to final is just a bonus. Do corrections by looking to your reference. Not sure which timezone you in, but if you run stable client we can schedule you some basic pattern work training lessons with the F/A-18.

Hier kommt es dann drauf an was du machen willst. Flugzeuge kennen lernen, Platzrunden, Procedures fliegen dürfte gut gehen.

Pitch controls for P-51 - limit saturation?
Agathos_Deimon replied to Emacs's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
You should never use saturation to artificially limit the axis. I would also recommend to go only for a slight curve - i use 10 on pitch and roll axis for all WW2 fighters - and just really practising riding the edge. It is one of the key skills to learn and master in any plane and very satisfying once you are there. Can be a long road but a rewarding one. If you like hop over to Agathos Flightschool at Youtube and check my basic tutorials on coordinated flight, stalls and spins - they are recorded in Warthunder but the principles apply to other sims and RL - and than practise practise practise. Good luck and happy hunting. -
Firing in RWS+LTWS Mode like in TWS? Correct behaviour?
Agathos_Deimon replied to Agathos_Deimon's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
As i said, i was just suprised how it worked out, as from documentation and handbooks i expected a different behaviour. If this is how it currently works, i can and will make use of it. :) -
Quick question. According to the POH, Chucks Guide and several tutorials the RWS+LTWS mode doesn't provide enough track info for a firing solution and will change to another mode when hitting the trigger. To see into which mode the F/A-18 will go i used my training mission. Used undesignate to get a star on one of the targets tracked in RWS+LTWS mode got into range and fired and AIM120C at around Rmax at 25. But to my suprise radar stayed in RWS+LTWS mode. I selected next target using undesignate and fired, than next, fire, next fire. So this was excatly the same behaviour i would expect from TWS. But the entire time radar was in RWS+LTWS, 140°, 4 bars. Is this behaviour correct? DCS Version current stable build.

Help required with VR settings/expectations
Agathos_Deimon replied to Digitalvole's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
I fear that you currently have to life with this situation until either GPU/CPU improves so much that it can pump DCS to 80-90 fps under most VR conditions or else the engine of DCS improves in performance. Its one of the reason why i - although i love the flight model of the WW2 fighters in DCS - stay away from WW2 A2A especially MP. One is just at a severe disadvantage when there are no labels. When i do WW2 A2A either PvE or PvP i go with labels dot only. That really helps although not a perfect solution. It may sound a little odd, but for A2A PvP in VR i personally like Warthunder Sim still the most, as it has extremely good performance in VR and you do not encounter ASW issues like in DCS or IL2. -

Final update. I guess i found the issue. Mostly when using TWS i stayed in INT PRF Modus. But it seems that MED at all currently has only disadvantages and no real advantages. So L&S is lost when at greater distances a MED bar hits it. Once i switched to only HI i could crank and F-pole relatively easy in TWS using 40°/4 BAR and AUTO mode. STT also seem way more stable just using HI. Even when target goes beaming or cold.
-
I admit that in TWS using BIAS or MAN its most likely a user problem on my side atm. But shouldn't the Hornet keep the cone aligned with the L&S when i use AUTO in TWS? Similar to an STT lock? Another thing. I ran into this video How is the guy able to reaquire the STT lock so quickly after he lost it at 7:25? I do not see the TDC moving at all, almost looks like an autoreaquire. Similar situation at 9:55 TDC stays where it is, but a lock. Or will sensor select right work in those situations, cause there is only one contact on the scope?

Another update after first MP session. Let me first say...HOLLY F$CK$UNG SH$T does the Hornet perform in CAP/A2A compared to the Mirage in MP. I used it more or less in a similar fashion to the Mirage with the added benefit of FOX3 deployement greatly reducing my exposure to threats and lord am i impressed by the potential an power. I just miss my IR warning system i am so used to from the Mirage and so a manpack stinger got me in the end. ;) After MP i have to admit its probably a DAU issue. TWS mode in hornet seems just not really suited to my kind of A2A approach and so maybe i just get lost in all the things to do, to keep a good TWS picture. Some functions just seem to be counter intuitive in functionality. The one remaining issue i can not attribute to myself is why TWS with AUTO mode enabled seems to be so weak at tracking the L&S, even with just 40° azz and 4 or less bars. Had player two ship approaching me, designated L&S and DT2 and both where close together horizontaly and verticaly. But radar was not able to track them good, even though they didn't take eavasive actions. Wanted to set up a nice two 120C launch, but had to aboard and reattack using STT on both seperately.

Hi folks, thanks again for the feedback. Here a little update. Did the training mission on 120B/C, left everything there as it came and was able to get all bandits using BVR. Nevertheless on the first guy there i also twice lost the lock for no apparent reasons. Radar mode the mission uses is RWS+LTWS and STT to shoot. After that i modded my training mission. AWACS removed and two dummy flights added to have non hostile targets. I spawned in and than went through all radar modes seperately to see. RWS without LTWS. I finally was able to crank/F-Pole a hostile engaging me using an STT lock. It was lost once around 45nm, but than from ~38nm i could hold the lock while approaching with hostile 25° of to the left, after he shot crank until hostile was 60° off to the right, than turn back into him, launch 120C and bug out. Went on to try the same with RWS+LTWS. Here i ran into the same issues as before. Which i do not really understand, cause from my understanding LTWS only displays additional info and gives a soft target lock option. But once going to STT it should be no different than RWS. Than played around with TWS on the non hostiles. This was inconclusive. On the 2 non hostile flights i could suprisingly well keep tracks, L&S and DT2. Radar easily refreshed tracks even of the flight at flanking/cold aspect. I tried some basic multitarget launches. Worked....BUT...the same did not work later on. I did not have so much time, but from some brief testing it may be that the issue is cause by the radar not properly "reseting" after it lost a L&S/DT2 and not properly getting out of EXP/RAID mode. I know a similar issue on the M2000C where after a lost lock or unsuccesful lock attempt the radar dish gets "stuck" and one has to manually reset it by unlocking so it goes on to sweep. So i reseted the F/A-18s radar after each lost lock and/or use of EXP/RAID it seemed to improve reaquiring. Will see if i can reproduce that regularly for a solid track.
-
OK guys. Thanks for the first feedbacks. Today i gonna 1st start with simply playing through the training mission for the 120C, see if i run into the issue their to. If no, it might be mission specific. If yes, i will see that i get a track recorded. One question at the current point. How can i verify that hostile is trying to ECM me. I know how it looks like in the M2000C, but how does the Hornets radar give me feedback about his.
-
Hi folks, with the sale going on, i finally decided to go for the Hornet. Performance wise a very sweet plane and with its FBW system very need to handle. Just like the M2000C which was my 1st jet ever, a nice and welcome difference to my usually WW2 warbird stuff. I spent my time setting up controls to my comfort and getting used to the plane, its start-up, VFR TO & L/D on field and after about an hour was ready to go for A2A training. I worked through Chucks Guide, watched some tutorials before i hoped into an A2A training mission i build for the M2000C. Goal was to try out some normal 120C BVR shots both in TWS and STT mode, than go further testing cranking shots and finally some launches against two targets. But to my surprise i ran into troubles with keeping a radar lock at all. After about two additional hours i gave up, cause i couldn't achieve any of the desired training goals. I went back to the guides and tutorials but couldnt find a solution to what i experienced, so i ask here for some help. Conditions of the training mission: I can spawn in A2A targets (Mig29A&S, SU27, F16s, F18s) using the F10 menu. The engagment starts over the water at ~80-90nm, starting altitude for both side ~25k ft, closing speed ~800-900kts TAS. I have an AWACS to support me. Hostile are highest AI level, tasked to destroy my flight. Launch and radar operations on their side is "randomized" to reflect some variaty. So sometimes they will STT and fire at Rmax, somtimes between Rmax and Rne, sometimes wait for Rne. What happened: I spawn a hostile in. I see him on my attack radar screen. I lock him up and get a L&S. Range decreases. At somewhere between 40-25 nm i lose the lock, although bandit is HOT , co-alt or higher, against a clear blue sky and closure rate is ~800-1000kts. After that i get a nice red diamond on my radar screen, but can not reaquire the target. It doesnt matter if i am in RWS trying to get a STT, or if i am in TWS trying to get a L&S primary track. Somewhere along the road hostile is shooting at me, so i am forced to take evasives. Usually i beat the missiles go hot again, but still reaquiring target is impossible. Still red diamonds, but no lock. Distances close further, below 10nm. I am forced to use borsight mode to fire the 120c. Even in vertical or wide mode ACM mode it is very hard to get a lock even when hostile is HOT and closure is high. I tried to reduce bars and azzimuth to have higher scan frequencies, switched between AUTO/MANUAL/BIAS Modes and between HI/INT/ME PRF to see if that makes a difference. NOTHING. Very frustrating. I am was not able to do a single successful BVR shot. The only defensive maneuvering the hostiles did while at BVR ranges was probably activating their ECM. Might that be so effective against the F/A-18s radar? Or what am i doing wrong here. EDIT: DCS Version is the current stable build.

I use a slightly different TO approach, but use the finish manual as a guideline. Works well and you of the ground pretty quick. at around 13:00 Minutes.

Have you tested both the D-25 and D-30? In my experience DCS treats them as two seperate planes and so you need two folders.

I ran into the same issue on atleast 2 servers. Magics where available at field, but ground crew wouldnt install them. No solution found. -

Question on Weapon Select Neutral (PCA Select)
Agathos_Deimon replied to Agathos_Deimon's topic in M-2000
@jojo That seems to work only if you have selected the weapon before using the quick selection mode gun/magic. i.e. if i select 530 or Droptank on PCA, than use quick select gun/magic and than use neutral two times i am back at default Top row. If from no weapon selection, i simply quick select gun/magic a double neutral will not bring me back to default top row. But atleast its not only at my end, so seems to be a bug within the M2000C module. -
Question on Weapon Select Neutral (PCA Select)
Agathos_Deimon replied to Agathos_Deimon's topic in M-2000
Strange, cause if i am in NAV mode, select gun or magic via quick select and than use neutral (PCA Select) it only returns the HUD to NAV mode, but not the top PCA row. I have to click on the gun/magic PCA button to return the top PCA row to NAV. I have both tried to reset my entire control config and ran a repair but the above behaviour stays.
